03:09<twb>cooldharma06: svn is more cathedral and git is more bazaar, which is why corporates still use svn a lot
03:10<twb>svn also deals better when >ahem< certain senior dev team members commit the Visual Studio DVD .iso into svn :-/

04:26<twb>I should probably just RTFS

12:13<dpkg>You can install Debian from a USB stick/thumbdrive/pen drive/key on x86 systems, as long as your system's BIOS can boot from USB. Details are in the Installation Guide, see http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch04s03 and ask me about <install debian> for hybrid CD/DVD images. Use http://sf.net/projects/win32diskimager/ to write images from Windows. For BIOSes not capable of USB boot, ask me about <plop>.
12:14<somiaj>asd: we suggest you use win32diskimager to write the debian.iso file to a usb to make it bootable. But you said you also write the iso directally to a cd via your burner. If you got the same error it could be that the download is corrupt and you need to redownload the image. I belive windows has an md5sum tool you can use to check this before you actually start the download again.

17:35<Nathan2055>So I was installing testing, and it gave me the option to add backports to my sources.list. However, AFAIK backports are just for stable. Should I use backports or not?

17:39<Nathan2055>So would adding backports to my testing sources.list accomplish anything?
17:39<chealer>Nathan2055: no. I'm surprised you were suggested that
17:39<Nathan2055>Me too, I'm pretty sure backports are taken from testing anyway.
17:39<Nathan2055>Should I report it as a bug?
17:41<Ryccardo>Nathan2055: that installer (well, most likely an updated version) will be the one that will be used for stable jessie
17:41<wompa>I didn't get the option, it was just there in the sources.list post-installation
17:41<Nathan2055>I chose expert install, so that may be why.
17:41<wompa>ah
17:41<Nathan2055>I dunno, I assume it won't do any harm unless I try and install something from it.
17:42<Ryccardo>it will either be empty or nonexistant anyway (assuming it correctly added something "jessie-backports" ofc)
17:43<wompa>How could it do harm? If you try it will just not be able to download the packages and hence unable to install anything?

18:35<somiaj>babylon: it isn't required, but without it you leave a possible security hole by leaving images of past data there. So it is assumed that if you want encryption you will want secure erasing which the debian installer just does and I don't htink gives you an option.
18:36<babylon>you can cancel the secure erase step and continue with installer

18:37<babylon>I now redid the installation and skipped the secure erase part

23:10<twb>what somiaj said. If you do it, let me know
23:11<somiaj>you could try to file a wish list bug against apt and see what the matianer says about such a feature

23:17<somiaj>for having so many bugs it runs well. (:

23:43<himi>hey, i have got a problem with jessie & kernel 3.16-2. when i am in x under this kernel everything freezes around all 20 seconds for a short time. when i shutdown from x, it takes around 20min until my laptop powers off. when i shutdown via tty it takes forever (until i hit power button), and there are some messages displayed (http://paste.debian.net/127083). with kernel 3.14-2 it works fine. i have got a samsung np355v5c (lspci: http://paste
23:44<himi>what can i do to fix this?

23:50<himi>lsusb? (:
23:51<twb>lsusb uses codes from the device, which I don't trust
23:51<twb>Although I guess they can fake the product id just as easily
23:53<twb>Also I really only need to identify what class of device it is. "HID" is suboptimal but e.g. "that's a keyboard" and "that's a camera" is probably sufficient
