00:15<twb>is there a manpages.debian.net for info?
00:15<twb>A couple of times a year I want to read a non-DFSG info and it's not worth the slowdown of having non-free in my sources list
00:15<twb>e.g. right now, I want to know if timeout(1) defaults to signal 9 or 15

00:18<twb>Oh derp, I can't read. It actually says TERM in the manpage. My fault for not remembering anything but the numbers

00:23<twb>(I was seeing a weird problem after turning on power saving in my sound card -- with bedtime stories of "timeout 3h festival --tts book", I'd wake up and it'd be playing the same diphone over and over and wouldn't respond to anything but a hard reboot. I was going to downgrade from --signal=KILL to --signal=TERM, but since that's already the default signal, I'm going to try --signal=STOP (i.e. background it.))

02:01<twb>GUI people! How low
02:01<twb>GUI people! How small can I make /tmp without breaking GUI stuff?
02:01<jaquer>Hi all. Day before yesterday I ran apt-get dist-upgrade on my wheezy server and the locales package got messed up: http://sprunge.us/cVeA
02:01<twb>I noticed I currently set it to 20% (of 4GB RAM) which is probably way more than is really needed.
02:02<twb>jaquer: "en_US.UTF-8...Killed
02:02<twb>Erk, stupid IRC client.
02:02<twb>jaquer: "en_US.UTF-8...Killed" -- why was it killed?
02:03<jaquer>It just happens. I get the same error when I rung locale-gen manually.
02:03<twb>jaquer: also if you run "dpkg-reconfigure locales" you can fix the immediate issue (assuming that doesn't also die)
02:03<jm_>check your limits
02:03<twb>in another window, sudo -g adm tail -fn0 /var/log/syslog /var/log/auth.log
02:03<twb>then watch if anything shows up while that's happening.
02:03-!-wlfuetter [~Wolfgang@139.20.102.236] has joined #debian
02:04<twb>+1 for checking ulimits (though you'd probably know if you had manually set them low enough to matter), also check stuff like "df" and "free -m" for resource exhaustion
02:05<jaquer>ulimit -a: http://sprunge.us/PhKV
02:05<jaquer>df -h: http://sprunge.us/NAEc
02:05<twb>Why am I getting ^Ms in your pastes...
02:06<twb>Ok it's you, not me.
02:06<twb>tr -d '\r' | pastebinit ==> http://sprunge.us/jFfW doesn't have them
02:06-!-marcus [~marcus@37.247.8.53] has joined #debian
02:06<jaquer>Good question. I'm copying/pasting from PuTTY to the site.
02:06<twb>jaquer: don't worry, I thought it was me. If it's you I can ignore it.
02:06<jaquer>K
02:07<jaquer>free -m: http://sprunge.us/iVLH
02:07<twb>OOC what VM is that?
02:07<jaquer>Yes, it's a low-end VPS.

02:08<twb>Or more swap if you prefer; I normally don't bother with swap (except zram)
02:08<jaquer>I don't have that freedom. :P
02:08<twb>Ah OK.
02:08<jaquer>Damn, it's OOM
02:08<twb>Do you actually care about locales? If you're en_US you can probably just not use locales
02:09<jaquer>I... suppose I don't. I just kind of assumed I needed it.
02:09<twb>in sshd_config comment out the accept env lang lc_* line
02:09<twb>And change /etc/default/locales (IIRC) from en_US to C, and purge locales package
02:09<twb>Then you just get the default locale, which is effectively US english
02:09<twb>That's what I do on my little servers
02:10<jaquer>I might give that a shot.
02:10<twb>You can also save disk space by purging them -- localpurge will set it up for you, or you can do it by hand in dpkg.cfg
02:10<jaquer>I already run localepurge.
02:10<twb>the sshd_config bit is just because if you're sshing from a Debian host that *does* have locales, it gets confused
02:11<twb>jaquer: you can also purge all of /usr/share/doc and stuff, too ;-)
02:12<twb>http://sprunge.us/dMCG?sh#n-51 but don't be surprised if it blows your foot off

05:46<jm_>tech: it's the default - have you tried accessing it via wget to remove browser cache as a culprit?
05:46<jm_>MarvelDigital: but what will you update to? I don't get this part
05:47<miiichael>If you're putting the old drive in the new machine, there probably won't be anything to update (unless of course you're switching between AMD and nVidia for video)

17:00<binar>hi, I am running debian sid and when trying aptitude safe-upgrade I get "Internal error: found 2 (choice -> promotion) mappings for a single choice." thousands of times while aptitude searches (probably forever) a way to upgrade my system. should I file a bug and if yes, what should I include?
17:02<ompaul>binar: that is not how you do sid - sid is like this apt-get update && apt-get -d dist-upgrade
17:02<ompaul>binar: safe-upgrade is for between versions
17:02<sysvalve>ompaul: how is that? aptitude was not the cool kid?
17:02<ompaul>!why aptitude
17:02<dpkg>aptitude has more advanced conflict/dependency resolution and will often find a solution where apt-get gives up. It can be used from the command line like apt-get plus an interactive resolver makes it much easier to recover from broken dependencies. It has advanced search capabilities (see <aptitude search>). For some upgrades, apt-get is preferred (e.g. <lenny->squeeze>, <squeeze->wheezy>). http://tinyurl.com/3g4d4d9.
17:02<sysvalve>I'm doing aptitude safe-upgrades and no problem whatsoever
17:02<ompaul>!wyse apt-get
17:02<ompaul>!why apt-get
17:02<dpkg>For big upgrades such as from stable to testing, apt-get will often behave better than aptitude (this used to be the other way around as aptitude was recommended for etch->lenny). Aptitude's resolver can sometimes produce unexpected results, but then apt-get will often just give up and provide no assistance in the same situation. Chose the right tool for the job and pay attention.

18:42<sauron>I just detest the way maintainers are trying to sneak this crap in
18:43<sauron>in a nutshell, the problem is I don't want systemd installed, but due to a (deliberately?) broken dependency chain I can't have my printer drivers installed without it.
18:43<sauron>which is retarded

18:44<sauron>the maintainer of policykit seems to claim it can't possibly work without systemd, despite evidence to the contrary.
18:45*agaida think - some people don't like systemd as pid 1 - but what against libpam-systemd
18:45<sauron>and he's closed two bugs in a fit of pique without providing substantive answers to anything, so I'm doubtful there's a reasoned debate there
18:46<mtn>sauron: I like this response to the bug: "non-sense."

18:54<sauron>well, this is sid, but even so, my view is the policykit maintainer is at fauly be deliberately forcing a dependency chain that bypasses systemd-shim, and claiming that it's necessary when this is clearly untrue

20:43<somiaj>DesertRock: you have to first upgrade to wheezy
20:43<somiaj>DesertRock: any reason you want to go allt eh way to testing, and not stay with wheezy untill jessie releases next year sometime
20:43<somiaj>(like middle to end of year)
20:45<DesertRock>somiaj, everyone suggests to go to testing because it is stable enough
20:45<somiaj>DesertRock: most here would suggest staying at stable unless you know debian well.
20:46<somiaj>DesertRock: and as 'it is stable enough' I woudl say applies only to desktop users
20:46<somiaj>DesertRock: but jessie will freeze here in a few weeks, choice is yours, i was just gonna suggest wheezy and wait untill jessie is released to upgarde again
