05:28<n1mh>hi
05:28<n1mh>may I ask something here?
05:29<weasel>!ask
05:29<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>.
05:30<n1mh>ok
05:31<n1mh>I need to know the licenses of a bunch of packages (~450)
05:31<n1mh>is there a command that I can use for it?
05:31<weasel>look at usr/share/doc/$package/copyright. These might give you some hints as to what these packages are licensed under.
05:32<n1mh>that's the way I've been doing
05:33<n1mh>but I wonder if there is something more automatic
05:33<n1mh>something I can use in a script

08:08<vbox>Can i use ubuntu repo in debian 7?
08:08<petn-randall>vbox: Technically yes, but you will loose support because that repo is not designed to work with Debian.
08:09<T0rch>why would you want to do that?
08:10<vbox>petn-randall, what if there are two bash updates, which one will my crunchbang pick? ubuntu or debian
08:10<petn-randall>vbox: Oh, you're not even using Debian.
08:10<petn-randall>!crunchbang
08:10<dpkg>CrunchBang Linux is a Live CD distribution originally based on <Ubuntu>, now based on Debian as of version 10, featuring the <Openbox> window manager. It is not supported in #debian. http://www.crunchbang.org/ #crunchbang on irc.freenode.net. See <based on debian>.
08:11<vbox>petn-randall, can i use debian repo in crunchbang ?
08:11<petn-randall>vbox: Ask on #crunchbang, we only support Debian here.

08:53<foobar2>Hi guys, I have been having a strange issue for several months now which is so strange that I do not even know how to google it. I will describe it in two lines in case someone had the same problem. (debian sid) In addition I am not sure if this is considered a bug or not.. anyway.. here we go:

08:56<foobar2>I run apt-get dist-upgrade -> gives me the typical list of things to upgrade, remove AND also things that I should re move with "autoremove". -> I press "N". -> Then I run aptitude dist-upgrade -> it gives me the same list. This time instead of saying to run autoremove for some packages it says that it will remove them. OK so far. Here is the problem now:

08:57<foobar2>I press "q" and then I rerun apt-get dist-upgrade. This time apt-get will not tell me that some packages are not required and I have to type autoremove to remove them. apt-get can not detect that there packages are reduntant any more.
08:58<foobar2>these*
08:59<foobar2>Somehow by running aptitude dist-upgrade (without proceeding) makes apt-get unable see all the installed but reduntant packages in the system.

15:18<naoliv>somiaj, there is a python program that uses a lib (written in C). The C part is segfaulting in a delete. I would like to use valgrind to debug this part. Using a pure "valgrind python program.py" throws too much python malloc warnings. Using --suppressions=/usr/lib/valgrind/python.supp doesn't help (nor using python2.7-dbg)
15:20<somiaj>would the python-dbg package help, not sure what would be best here.

16:24<Enraged>It is possible to get access to someone's encrypted linux installation by injecting a keylogger into their unencrypted, pre boot files, and just waiting.
16:24<madduck>you need to (a) insert the keylogger and (b) get the data
16:25<madduck>either of which is easy; the two together are not as trivial
16:25<wolf>prompt - install pitivi, but it does not run. in the search engine fails to find a solution distinct
16:25<madduck>but sure, there is this attack vector.
16:25<madduck>does it apply to you?
16:25<dondelelcaro>Enraged: sure, but anyone who has access to the hardware can do that
16:25<dondelelcaro>Enraged: and it doesn't even need to be in the boot bits; it can be a pure hardware device
16:25<YSB_hattrick>Sounds like you need a TPM chip.
16:26<dondelelcaro>YSB_hattrick: even that wouldn't be enough
16:26<Darksonn>on an unrelated note, anyone know what to do if after you log in to gnome, it hangs at a screen with your background and the cursor (you can move the cursor)
16:26<Enraged>Dude, it is easy; If you have a dual boot system as I want to have, with Windows & Debian, you don't need physical access. When they go onto Windows, inject the keylogger into their Debian pre boot. Wait for them to login to Debian. The passphrase is stored. Then, they launch Windows, and you recover the passphrase.
16:26<Enraged>Then, copy the encrypted block, again, through Windows
16:26<Enraged>Now you have their passphrase and files.
16:26<Enraged>^ This is not difficult to do.
16:27<madduck>… iff you have identified your target
16:27<dondelelcaro>if that's the attack vector you're concerned about, UEFI and signed kernels is the way to solve it
16:27<dondelelcaro>or just not using windows at all
16:27<Enraged>I would normally agree but that's not an option here.
16:27<madduck>also make sure to avoid $5 wrenches hitting you
16:27<YSB_hattrick>And more traditional security measures of not letting others use your machine, keeping the machine within your sight, not leaving it places, and not copying sensitive files onto the drive.
16:27<Enraged>HA HA HA, indeed
16:27<Enraged>I am aware of the danger or being drugged and $5 wrenches

23:13<caravel>Enraged: actually, it won't write to the "hard drive", but to the encrypted volume(s), yes
23:13<caravel>And by default it will fill then up indeed (at least while using the custom partitonning from the debian installer)
23:14<caravel>That can take very long and be quite unexpected
23:15<caravel>(I prefer to shred the disk myself, prior to the installation)

23:22<Zeus_>Hello. I am currently an Ubuntu user hoping to switch to Debian (without deleting my existing files). Are there any good resources to look at for the installation? I cannot afford to screw this up.
23:25<Zeus_>And I do ah, have one issue that may hinder me a bit. Ubuntu doesn't install with, by default, a seperate partition for /home/ and being a noob when I installed it left it to the defaults, and am not sure exactly how to get around that. I haven't done much research into how to do that at this point, but if anybody has a URL for that lying around already, I would appreciate it. I don't expect anybody to do my work for me.

23:43<martingale>vlc crashes my whole OS if i try to "next media in playlist" to skip an avi, is anyone else experiencing this?
23:43<caravel>Zeus_: not sure about URLs, but basically :
23:43<caravel>- it is possible to install Debian onto existing volumes, without reformatting any
23:44<martingale>i'm running jessie and i don't quite know how to troubleshoot system-killing bugs yet
23:44<martingale>(though i'm running jessie because i want to learn)
23:44<caravel>Zeus_: - still, you REALLY should consider to backup your files, no matter what you decide to do: keep in mind that your disk might just crash, any time
23:44<Zeus_>Of course, I do that frequently
23:46<caravel>in that case, you can destroy everything during install, then restore your data, right ?
23:46<caravel>feel free to make a simple, full disk, proper Debian installation, encrypting everything even :)
23:46<Zeus_>as for using the same partition, I would do that, but I wish to be able to have multiple Linux distros, for various reasons. Plus, if I ever end up wishing to swap, and I'm considering putting my home on a (fast) external drive so I can carry it around.
23:46<caravel>by default, it'll partition it all properly

23:47<caravel>for multiple distro, that's what I do:
23:47<Zeus_>I can't really do that either cara. I would, but I still have a Windows install. I don't use it, I only rarely do, but I need to be able to test my code and collections on it
23:48<caravel>s/cara/caravel/ hint* use TAB in your IRC client
23:49<caravel>as per Wind'Oz, myself I have this constraint too
23:49<caravel>=> a VM is just great (and I wouldn't give it any more)
23:49<caravel>as per multiple distros: GRUB is lovely
23:50<Zeus_>I already have grub up, but I haven't used it much
23:50<caravel>=> I have a "neutral" GRUB which does "chainloading" other distros
23:50<caravel>search for this word, you'll find plenty of tutorials
23:50<caravel>then I even give each distro its own, distinct volumes for /boot and /

23:51<Zeus_>I'd still end up with a split home directory, as I wish to share it
23:51<Zeus_>although, I guess I could just wipe it all after a total back up
23:51<caravel>no no, I use another volume for all data
23:51<Zeus_>what's the partition configuration manager like for installing Debian?
23:52<caravel>[..] and that's accessible from all distros
23:52<Zeus_>I'm basically asking if it's complicated, because I need to still have a root and home fit next to the Windows partitions
23:53<caravel>what I'd do is placing user data inside /home/wheezy/userA /home/jessie/userB etc.
23:53<caravel>you need to read about LVM, that's what I use - it's great and very flexible

23:54<Zeus_>I'll look at that
23:54<Zeus_>I've been using GParted

23:55<caravel>command line is a lot better, I use lvm tools and `parted` -- from the cli - it's *not* THAT complicated :)
23:57<caravel>myself I have a LVM "VG" (volume group) for boot volumes, and another "VG" entirely encrypted for the rest (root partitions, swap, data)
23:57<caravel>so, that second VG is inside a crypt (using LUKS)
23:58<caravel>as per Wind'Oz, like I said, it's inside a virtual machine image
23:58<caravel>(hence in a file, inside the data volume)
23:58<caravel>Zeus_: read about these things, you'll find tutorials
23:59*caravel afk :) good luck & <3
23:59<Zeus_>'thanks
