00:58<Froolap>How do I change the font during the boot process? When I first power on the machine grub presents a menu in a nice readable font.Shortly afterwards it switches to a micro font which is unreadable until it reads what I set in /etc/default/console-setup and it becomes readable again.
00:59<birch>Froolap, why?
01:00<Froolap>Because someone thought that the messages during biootup were important enough to have someone read and I don't think it's a good idea to hide from what I don't understand.
01:00<Froolap>I want to know what my machinwe is doing during bootup.

01:03<Froolap>I know it's possible to change the font during the bootup process, I had it working properly before.... but an update unfixed it.
01:04<zelm107>i installed the standard debian wheezy distro, but how do i change it so i can put things on the desktop?
01:06<Froolap>I don't know if the linux /vmlinuz-3.2.0-4-686-pae root= line in grub.cfg supports a font= line or what the syntax might be, but that might have been what I changed before that made the bootup process readable
01:06<birch>zelm107, you can't. gnome shell nerfed the desktop.
01:06<sleser>guys what is the diference with debian / debian linux mint
01:07<zelm107>so if i wanted to use the desktop, use kdr or something else?
01:07<Froolap>One leaves your breth fresh after eating all those twinkies.
01:07<birch>linux mint is based on debian but is maintain by a different organization. they have their own irc channels. this is not the right channel for mint support
01:08<sleser>yeh that i know
01:08<birch>zelm107, anything other than gnome shell lol. they also nerfed directional arrow buttons for scrolling...they are on crack
01:08<zelm107>i wanted to install cinnamon, but it seems debian's repos don't have it

01:09<zelm107>what do you recommend if i wanted to have a gui more like windows?
01:09<sleser>i still dont get what it means , by beeing maintained by diferent organisation is
01:09<birch>sleser, so the difference is w/e their team decides to make different. not much of an answer, heh
01:09<sleser>dont find a diference , its ether should be debian or mint on their own i think

01:15<sleser>i think its stupid
01:15<sleser>is what made me ask the quastion what was the diference
01:16<sleser>also seeing on distrowatch its 1st on list , makes one get confused
01:16<birch>forking is a function of variety
01:16<birch>1st means most popular or highest rated
01:16<birch>different distros are made for different purposes
01:16<birch>hammer for nails, screwdriver for screws, etc
01:17<birch>i think this belongs in #debian-offtopic now. anyway, cya

04:25<guruprasad>Hi, I run a mail server on Debian stable with exim and dovecot. I have enabled TLS in exim following Things were working fine until a recent Thunderbird upgrade. Now whenever I try to send a mail, I get "The message could not be sent using SMTP server for an unknown reason"

04:26<guruprasad>What could be the issue here and how to resolve it?
04:26<jm_>try using the swaks tool to test it as indicated on that page

04:29-!-cnanakos_away is now known as cnanakos
04:29<jm_>guruprasad: then I would suggest two things - 1. check what kind of SSL realted settings thunderbird offers, 2. use a tool ala ssldump (wireshark will also work) to compare session negotiation options between the two

04:30<guruprasad>I remember reading something about Thunderbird dropping support for TLS 1.1 and supporting only TLS 1.2, but I am not sure if that is what was mentioned in the changelog on upgrading icedove on Debian.
04:30<guruprasad>Have to read up.
04:31<jm_>also try this
04:33<guruprasad>jm_, my bad. Thunderbird had opened a dialog in the background asking to accept my self-signed certificate and I didn't see it till now. After accepting it, I am able to send emails. Since this was a new Thunderbird installation, it happened to be the first time I was sending out email from my SMTP server using it.

16:33<awal>somiaj, you right :)
16:33-!-broucarie [] has joined #debian
16:34<somiaj>nezZario: you will have to be careful with the upgrade to keep the transitional packages from moving you to systemd automatically, but once you install the correct sysvinit packages it won't swap the init system to systemd
16:36<nezZario>so if I take wheezy and install sysvint-core and upgrade to jessie, it should keep me without it?
16:36<somiaj>(well you will have to install that from jessie repo before doing dist-upgrade) but yes
16:36<somiaj>as sysvinit-core isn't in wheezy
16:36<nezZario>ahhh, thanks for the heads up there...

16:42<sleser>guys is it a good idia to try out a nvidia driver from nvidia site ?
16:43<diabl0z__>somiaj, I must take care to this choice becouse I'm installing it on a laptop with optimus technology, so I have an integrated gpu Intel and a discrete gpu Nvidia 720m, maybe I could try to use bumblebee
16:43<diabl0z__>somiaj, last time I tried I had some problems :)
16:43<somiaj>diabl0z__: you are gonna run into issues that way on wheezy (and linux in general).
16:43<somiaj>diabl0z__: I don't think you'll get good support at all with that card in wheezy. Even on my new laptop I upgraded to jessie (for the newer xorg) to get haswell support from the intel driver
16:44<somiaj>the kernel will support but you also need xorg support too
16:44<somiaj>sleser: it is a bad idea on debian systems and can cause you troubles in the future. dpkg/apt during upgrades will overwrite the files and break things. Use the nvidia packages from debian non-free
16:44<diabl0z__>i read that in backports there isnt the last xserver-xorg-video-intel
16:45<sleser>debian non free backport has a bug for my card
16:45<somiaj>correct, and that is what is going to stop you from getting support for the intel side in wheezy
16:45<sleser>the driver i need only located on backport
16:45<sleser>otherwise nothing but noveou thing
16:46<diabl0z__>somiaj: what do you advise me to do to take advantage of and be able to use nvidia card?
16:46<somiaj>diabl0z__: I have no good advise. I have avoided such hardware. To get the intel support you'll need to be running jessie. I am unsure what is needed to get the bumblebee support

22:55<cae>somebody here, who's responsible for packages.d.o and/or metadata.ftp-master.d.o? The changelog link in 404'd, but the deb7u12 one is present

23:04<somiaj>cae: p.d.o is updated every so often (it is documented somehwere, let me look it up). Could it be it hasn't updated to the new changelog from the point release/security update and is pointing to a file that was removed.
23:05-!-fiasko_ [] has joined #debian
23:06<cae>somiaj: in my mind it's "once a day" or something like this... but deb7u13 should be correct, so p.d.o isn't pointing to wrong targets
23:06<somiaj>let me see what it is doing

23:08<somiaj>yea only the deb7u12 changelog is there, looks like the changelogs weren't extracted with the point release but the database was updated.
23:08<cae>so something says 7.6 includes openssl-something-deb7u12 and that's what metadata.ftp-master.d.o knows
23:09<somiaj>yea looks like metadata.ftp-master.d.o hasn't extracted any of the packages that got included with the 7.7 point release
23:09<somiaj>well the changelogs
23:10<somiaj>I am unsure where to look up the correct mailing list to send bugs about metadata.ftp-master.d.o

23:14<somiaj>unsure if this is just something that only gets done weekly or even slower than that or an actual bug that got overlooked.
23:14<somiaj>but either of those two places will know
23:14<cae>somiaj: thanks, I'll try my luck there... even if they're just pointing me somewhere else
23:15<somiaj>well that is the actual list (I'd think the mailing list would be better than irc but that is my guess) the webdevs will be on. Let them know about this and they will either explain how it works or fix it is my guess.

23:16<somiaj>cae: but you can download the .deb and extract the changelog yourself i you reall need it (or the source-deb)
23:17<cae>somiaj: I'm going to throw the hint into the channel and if there's no response in some hours, I'd mail them
23:17<cae>yeah, or just lookup /usr/share/doc/... since I've got a stable here with ofc. deb7u13 installed
23:17<somiaj>well if you happen to get an explainiation of what the issue is I'd be intersted if ya hilight my name.
23:18<cae>okay, I hopefully don't forget to update you if there are news
