03:06<jm_>bignose: what if you run aptitude sage-upgrade instead? or try adding libpurple0 to command line
03:07<jm_>perlapi-5.14.2 is provided by perl-base so you can also check apt-cache policy for these two packages
03:10<jm_>but looking at your apt-cache policy output it's a mess - a mix of jessie, stable, vlc and security

03:34<bignose>so, “be sure”? no, you really can't.
03:34<bignose>if you find an entry in the changelog saying it's fixed, you can probably trust that.
03:34<bignose>but you're really on your own for non-free.

03:36<jm_>yes, quite common if you use the version from backports
03:36<sleser>i had backport link on source list
03:36<sleser>but now removed the list can i reinstall the driver from non back port and have it working ?
03:37<sleser>imposible rite ?
03:37<sleser>because i saw debian site , the drivers i need only located in backport , if i understud the page rite
03:37<jm_>of course you can
03:37<sleser>u sure i can ?
03:38<jm_>(this only applies to debian tools - so dpkg and apt, if the older driver doesn't support your GPU you're out of luck obviously)
03:38<sleser>will it come out in future ?
03:38<jm_>only via backports or new release
03:39<sleser>so there will be new relises
03:39<jm_>new debian release that is
03:39<sleser>i use the 7.7
03:39<sleser>so basicaly on t he next virsion you mean ?
03:39<jm_>yeah jessie
03:40<sleser>i wont have to reformat do i ?
03:40<jm_>why would you reformat? debian releases are upgradable
03:40<sleser>alrite i got all this situation
03:40<sleser>thanks for help man
03:40<sleser>i can still hang with poor grafic so until then
03:41<jm_>you could try backporting the driver from jessie and testing it yourself

03:50<rebli>hi to all is there a guide about get rid of gnome in an installation? i'm using xfce
03:51<jm_>!remove gnome
03:51<dpkg>To remove or purge GNOME 2.x: aptitude remove ~nlibgnome ~nlibbonobo2 ~nliborbit2 ~nlibgnomeui ~nlibgnomevfs2. Use 'purge' instead of 'remove' if that's what you want (ask me about <purge>).
03:51<bignose>!remove gnome3
03:51<bignose>hmm
03:52<bignose>jm_: fixed my APT preferences. now the security upgrade doesn't even appear. I presume this means I have a version already installed that's newer than the one needing a security upgrade :-)

03:54<rebli>well i want to check what will happen, so, in synaptic, i selected all the installed packages in the gnome section, for complete removal; BUT it removes also lightdm (and how will i login the next time?) and install other libs clearly of gnome...
03:55<jm_>bignose: my quick look earlier suggests that wheezy security has a newer version than jessie
03:55<bignose>rebli: what DM will you want if you don't have the one that uses Gnome?
03:55<bignose>rebli: (AIUI, the “lightdm” uses Gnome infrastructure.)
03:55<rebli>bignose i'm already using xfce
03:56<jm_>rebli: then try removing only other package sets, i.e. those suggested by /msg dpkg install gnome
03:56<bignose>rebli: so, what is it you want to happen as a result of “remove Gnome”? XFCE uses a lot of Gnome libraries.
03:58<rebli>bignose: how can i know which gnome libraries xfce uses? i want get rid of unused packages and gnome3 in particular
04:00<jm_>apt-rdepends xfce4

I was trying to upgrade to 7.7, and received a couple of warnings. 1 is about iceweasel, it says it doesn't support the new, secure NTLM protocol. The other tells me about my mozilla/certdata.txt file. It wants a new version, 1.87. It then gives a big list of certificates to be added, renamed or changed. What am I meant to do with this info, please?

07:33<bluenemo>hi guys. is there a way to check if iptables has any rules applied? I understand that the given chains always exist. I want to develop a saltstack (orchestration tool) recipe that applies rules only when no rules are configured at all.
07:33<jm_>you can always check iptable -L output
07:34<bluenemo>jm_, yes I know, my first idea was to grep for ACCEPT or something. I was kind of looking for a cooler way than that :)
07:36<bluenemo>the idea is to do it by script
07:36<bluenemo>as in have a script understand if there are any filter rules loaded
07:36<jm_>bluenemo: what if it's deny only?
07:36<bluenemo>yeah thats the thing :)
07:36<jm_>I wrote my own script to parse iptables output for ip accounting purposes
07:37<bluenemo>maybe some fancy sed to look if some lines are below CHAIN's
07:38<bluenemo>s/CHAIN/target

18:57<somiaj>awal: not all software is set up to issue commands to the current runnign process. Kill is the best method, but don't send it the standard kill flag, send it QUIT kill flag and it should gracefully exit and not be killed
18:57<somiaj>man kill for various signals you can send to a pid with kill

19:11<awal>ok, ok. thanks retrospectacus
19:11<awal>so that's why in autostart files (fluxbox, openbox...) one should add & at the end of an x app :)
19:11<awal>I understand now
19:12<godi>wachhh
19:12<somiaj>though some processes are nicer and they also disassoicate themselves with the tty or pty, which is better than just running them in the background.

23:01<selenia>and do not tell me what I understand and do not. In fact, since I did briefly explain it, I question reading skills. Release name=packages are kept to that specific release, even when new stable is released. Branch name=Machine is automatically upgraded to new stable when new stable is released and kept on that cycle. The same applies for testing/Jessie though that one needs more consideration as packages may not be stable and you
23:01<selenia>will be kept with less stable packages if you do "testing" instead of release name. Sid/unstable are interchangable because unstable has always been called Sid
23:01<selenia>btw first release I used was Sarge

23:06<selenia>Of course you may want to keep say a server on 1 release but I think most admins are aware of this. Most desktop users I setup with Debian I put stable in their sources.list so they can keep current without much effort. Of course I tell them it will auto upgrade upon release
23:06<abrotman>what a horrible idea
23:06<abrotman>thank you for proving my point
23:07<selenia>people who paid for Windows previously actually like the idea of getting a new release free lol
23:08<selenia>horrible? Release comes and newer "stable" packages are pulled for them. Not much issue there. As to testing, that is different.
23:09<selenia>Let's just say I trust the release cycle here, though it winds up in some old packages in stable
23:10<selenia>by the time Debian declares it stable, it is in fact stable, unlike some other stable distros

23:25<Zeus_>I personally advocate adding all repositories for any given distro, such as bleeding edge, testing, unstable, etc. I also think that you should go out of your way to install multiple programs for everything, in case one breaks.
23:26<Zeus_>and be sure to delete any backups or other operating systems, wipe installation disks, and delete documentation files and such
23:26<Zeus_>they just clog the hard drive

23:27<selenia>Me too. I personally have Sid and testing in there so I can easily downgrade a set of packages temporarily in a pinch if an upgrade is a disaster. I also advocate apt-listbugs for anything but stable
23:27<selenia>and yup, I delete docs too except if I am just learning the program
23:27<selenia>in which case they can be helpful
23:28<Zeus_>the thing is, I'm not sure if you're serious with that
23:28<somiaj>use apt-get autoclean and keeping backups in /var/cache/apt/archives would be suggested over having testing repo installed if you need to downgrade.
23:28<selenia>well the multiple programs part depends. If it is not mission critical, it is easy to install if needed, otherwise clogging space
23:30<Zeus_>*tries to joke about atupid ideas* <selenia> I agree
23:30<selenia>well yeah that can often be an option. I only apt-get clean after a successful upgrade that runs stable. I am mindful about space, but not careless either

23:33<selenia>yeah autoclean is more selective. But I do run clean if my system is running stable after a few upgrades
23:33<selenia>just to save space
23:34<somiaj>but that wasn't my suggestion. autoclean so you have the packages that work well enough archived so you can downgrade easily enough if you have to
