10:58<Guest59>Hi :)
10:58<Guest59>I've been trying to route all inet traffic from my laptop to a server. Client is running openvpn 2.3.2-9 (Debian Jessie) through gnome network manager, server is 2.2.1-8+deb7u2 (wheezy); using PKI to connect works fine, but actually routing traffic doesn't work.

15:22<abrotman>use Radeon?
15:22<gordon24>yes, ati in laptop
15:22<jmcnaught>gordon24: the radeon driver is pretty good, so maybe just use that. Or you could provide more details like the PCI-ID of the GPU, the output of the command that you used (on paste.debian.net)
15:23<vic_>Hi, I’m looking for advice on the following problem. I have a usb stick which I format in fat32. If I give it a label, it automounts in /media/myuser But if I don’t, it automounts in /media/usb
15:23<vic_>The problem is that my user has write access to /media/myuser but not to /media/usb
15:23-!-tjader [~tjader@189.60.217.22] has quit [Quit: .]
15:24<vic_>So being able to write to the device depends on it having a label or not.
15:24<abrotman>gordon24: I"m saying, use the Radeon driver, it works well in most cases
15:25<vic_>Sounds weird isn’t it? But I’ve been narrowing down some permission problems I’ve had with various usb devices to this.
15:26<vic_>And just checked with same device, reformatted with and without label: in first case, I can write to it, in second I can’t, probably because mountpoint is different.
15:28<vic_>Incidentally, chown on /media/usb does not work. Even with sudo, I get "operation not permitted"

15:36<vic_>The weird thing is that disks with a label behave correctly.
15:36<peter1138>Disks with no label should use the GUID as the mountpoint, at least that's how it works in Wheezy.

19:50<jmcnaught>gypsy: okay the kernel you have should support multiple CPUs. If you wanted to try an amd64 kernel you would just need to enable multiarch support and install the appropriate kernel (everything else could stay the same). https://wiki.debian.org/Multiarch/HOWTO shows how to do that, but honestly I don't think that's the issue

23:10<blahman>so I had to start all over again from the beginning, and remember my drive was on sdb

23:11<blahman>but when I restarted my mac, the external hard drive with debian didn't display, so obviously my computer didn't see the EFI boot or something.
23:12<blahman>now that I think about it, perhaps I should have done a manual install to ensure an EFI boot partition was on the drive
23:12<blahman>the recommended install probably assumed I was using a windows computer instead of a mac?
23:12<somiaj>blahman: well usb 3.0 support might not be the best on the stock wheezy kernel, but I doubt that is your problem. When you booted into the installer are you sure you booted into efi mode and not legacy mode, the installer supports both and the version of grub that is installed is dependent on that
23:13<somiaj>and yes you do have to point it to the correct efi partition

23:15<blahman>somiaj how do I install a kernel to the external hard drive?
23:15<somiaj>you probabaly don't even have to reinstall, you just need to boot fomr a recovery tool (the installer will work) and fix the bootloader
23:16<somiaj>once you can boot into the install, do it normally, add wheezy-backport sources then apt-get -t wheezy-backports install packagename
23:16<somiaj>lets worry about getting grub to correctly boot though
23:16<somiaj>but first you have to make sure that the installer booted in efi mode and not legacy mode as this could be the issue too
23:16<blahman>you're probably right

23:25<somiaj>gordon24: well the radeon driver is free and in the main linux kernel. But to get 3d support with ath free driver you need some non-free firmware which is what is sitting in that linux-firmware-nonfree.
23:26<gordon24>kk I just installed it so I'm going to reboot then

23:28<gordon24>Well, all I needed was the linux-nonfree firmware and all is well, the ATI proprietary page must of confused it.. Cause now 3d support works :)
23:29-!-halofan102 [~chatzilla@184-97-223-171.mpls.qwest.net] has joined #debian
23:29<somiaj>gordon24: yea even though the radeon driver is free, to get 3d support it uses a nonfree firmware blob which you have to install sepertally. glad it works
23:30-!-barbanegra [~libertad@0001866c.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
23:30<gordon24>Yes :) Cause after the last reinstall, I didn't edit the boot to boot nomodeset and it came up, just needed the 3d support, so the firmware install helped and I'm not going to touch anything.. I'm going to set it back up and use it!!

23:31<anonman>somiaj this is blahman, had to switch my username for some reason, guess I had to use a part commend or something
23:31<anonman>anyways what can I do to get debian bootable on the external drive?
23:31-!-shirish_ [~quassel@117.222.2.207] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
23:31<somiaj>anonman: have you botted into a live or rescue system you can use?
23:32<somiaj>anonman: also make sure you boot into efi mode if you need to do efi boot
23:32<gordon24>anonman: install to the external, just boot to USB when you plug it in.
23:32<somiaj>gordon24: he installed it already having problems getting the bootloader to work correctly
23:32<anonman>i was using a live disk that boots to this screen:

23:32<somiaj>anonman: also when you partitioned the external drive did you make it GPT and include an efi partition?
23:33<somiaj>anonman: that is fine to use, you can even choose resuce mode in which you point it at the root filesystem on the external hd during the boot process
23:33<anonman>I just picked some kind of recommended install option or something, it might be better to start from scratch
23:33-!-blahman [~halofan10@107.191.33.4] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
23:33<anonman>i.e. reinstall debian again
23:33<somiaj>it could be, not really sure what you have done, and choice is yours
23:34<anonman>I'll just boot to the dvd 1.iso disk again
23:34<anonman>and go to the install screen then ask how to proceed

23:36<anonman>anyways I am on the installer boot menu of debian 7
23:36<anonman>so what should I do first?
23:36<anonman>select graphical install again?
23:36<alumno_>aaa okk
23:37<somiaj>anonman: select the one you prefer, I prefer expert myself, but text or graphical is just a matter of the enviroment you like
23:37<anonman>I prefer graphical since I can't copy and paste commands right now
23:38<anonman>right now I am using my old imac to talk on irc
23:38<anonman>the macbook pro is busy with the debian dvd
23:38<somiaj>well the main differnece is using a mouse/vs arror keys to navagate the menus
23:38-!-Trademark91 [~trademark@66.87.76.91] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
23:38<anonman>ok I'll pick graphical then
23:39<anonman>actually it seems the debian bootable dvd can't recognize my trackpad
23:39<anonman>so maybe I should select advanced instead?
23:39<somiaj>expert just gives you more options, which might be useful when setting up the partitions and the likes
23:39<anonman>so graphical can only recognize my keyboard
23:39<anonman>ok I'll do expert instead
23:41<anonman>actually the only options available from the startup menu are install, graphical install, advanced options etc
23:41<anonman>so pick 'install?
23:41<anonman>'install'*
23:41<somiaj>advanced options
23:41<anonman>ok
23:41<anonman>now i see expert install
23:41<anonman>selected that
23:41-!-ananth123 [~ananth@00014e40.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
23:41<anonman>so start with choose language then?
23:42<anonman>i.e. follow their list in order?
23:42<somiaj>yup
23:42<somiaj>just amswer questions
23:42<anonman>quick question, is there an easy keyboard option to pick when installing that will convert my mac keyboard command key to control
23:43<anonman>that way if I type command+c it will copy text rather than having to hit control +c
23:44<somiaj>I dno't use the installer that often, but you can probabaly chagne that later with xmodmap
23:44<anonman>so you're saying just pick the default us keyboard and change keymappings after install later?
23:45<somiaj>well I owuld pick the correct keymap
23:45<somiaj>but you can do slight changes liek change the modifiers later
23:45<anonman>i'll just pick en_us.UTF-8 then
23:45<somiaj>well that is locale/language not keyboard
23:46<anonman>ok
23:46<anonman>anyways now it is scanning dvd
23:47<anonman>now it gives a huge list of 'components' to load
23:47<anonman>how do I just pick them all?
23:48-!-CompWizrd [compwiz@dhcp-108-170-133-185.cable.user.start.ca] has joined #debian
23:48<anonman>since I want to make sure everything required is installed
23:48<somiaj>only load what you need, I don't hthink you'll need any
23:49<shadow>anonman: later you can load again from DVD
23:49<anonman>ok then
23:49<shadow>or internet
23:49<anonman>so what should I do here? it's at the 'load installer components from CD' screen
23:49<shadow>it's a relatively minor decision to make, when installing
23:49<shadow>probably a GNOME desktop, and if you want, a print server / ssh server
23:50<somiaj>those just install advanced components if you have a special setup, I cna't think of anything you'll need so just move on
23:50<somiaj>shadow: he isn't at tasksel yet, these are udebs, variours partition tools (non default) and other things are there for special install setups
23:50<shadow>ohh
23:50<anonman>well I just hit enter how it seems to be retrieving some standard stuff
23:51<shadow>if you miss a component you can go back and load it, or just start over again
23:51<shadow>that's the installer only
23:51<anonman>ok this might be an issue that I didn't address earlier
23:51<anonman>I am at this screen
23:51<anonman>it says some of your hardware needs non-free firmware files to operate
23:52<anonman>this came up after proceeding to the network part of the setup

23:54<anonman>nope
23:54<shadow>like that yes
23:54<anonman>with the colon
23:54<shadow>my program 'irssi' that I use for IRC does it automatically when I use [tab] to complete the name of someone

23:55<anonman>what should I do about this message saying I have non-free firmware?
23:55<shadow>welcome to the world of 1990, anonman :)
23:55<anonman>ha ha yup

23:56<anonman>got it to work by hitting tab
23:56<anonman>ok I will skip that stuff
23:56<shadow>anonman: I would ignore that message, and plug through trying to get Debian installed
23:56<anonman>just wanted to make sure it's not an issue
23:56<shadow>if you have at least a base install of Debian then the rest is pretty straightforward to try and get later from internet sources

23:57<anonman>ok I can just do an update once the OS is working through a system update?
23:57<shadow>problems that can occur are that you are missing some files which are not legal to distribute with the Debian Insstaller, so then, some of your devices will not work correctly until the drivers for those devices can see the missing files
23:57<anonman>say apt-get update/upgrade?
23:57<shadow>it's harmless, if annoying, when that doesn't work
23:57<shadow>yes
23:58<anonman>debian is going all richard stallman on me about 'free' software lol
23:58<shadow>hmm... for good reason
23:58<anonman>I understand the principle don't get me wrong
23:58<anonman>we're still stuck with windows gaming because hardware manufacturers won't just go to linux for god's sake
23:58<anonman>so yeah I get it
23:58<OERIAS>anonman, Allah sent us Debian
23:59<anonman>indeed
23:59<OERIAS>Allah's true Linux Distro
23:59<anonman>it's asking to configure the network, can I just skip this step?
23:59<shadow>the PC landscape is in a good place right now because most of the non-free addicts have moved on to iOS and Android
23:59<OERIAS>shadow, yes
23:59<OERIAS>finally
23:59<anonman>Valve is getting linux gaming to be more popular thankfully
