00:50<Enraged>Does anyone know how to forcibly reassign an allocated sd_ designation?
00:51<somiaj>Enraged: why do you want to change that? (assuming you mean like /dev/sda to /dev/sdb)?
00:51<Enraged>somiaj: Yes, that is exactly what I want
00:51<somiaj>Why, any reason you can't just use UUIDs?

00:52-!-Shogun [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:52-!-sleser [] has joined #debian
00:53<somiaj>Enraged: There may be a way to force udev to reassign the device or force it to always use a specific device, but for the most part don't think this is easy and the standard method is to identify the filesystems by UUID's
00:54<Enraged>somiaj: I have my /boot on a usb stick. When the machine is first loaded from it, it is assigned /dev/sdd. I then take out the USB stick and the machine runs fine, but /boot is obviously and desirably, unreadable, unwritable, having an input/output error. When you plug the USB stick back in, it is ALWAYS assigned sdf unless you plugged in a second device between the time of these 2 actions. The reason to plug the device in
00:54<Enraged>is to access /boot to do updates as an example. However, it won't assign the stick, even though fstab has the UUID listed to be mounted to /boot, sdd.
00:54<somiaj>that is because you did not umount /boot before you unplugged the drive
00:55<Enraged>somiaj: It does not let you unmount /boot before or after, even when attempting to force it.
00:55<somiaj>if you did that it would correctly release /dev/sdd and actually reassign it to /dev/sdd when you plug it in
00:55-!-trent [] has joined #debian
00:55<somiaj>must be something access stuff in /boot preventing it from being unmounted, in that case unplugging it is a bad idea
00:55-!-Eryn_1983_FL [foobar@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:55<somiaj>you can use lsof to try to figure out what is access the files inside boot and I'm unsure if it would be possible to releave that
00:56<somiaj>I guess since your kernel is in /boot it may be a bad idea to remove that part of the filesystem
00:57<jm_>Enraged: still, if you mount /boot using an UUID or a label, it should nto matter if it later becomes /dev/sdf
00:57<Enraged>somiaj: Well there is no operational issue with this laptop after you do so; I am solely trying to get this fixed so that updates will work correctly.
00:57-!-micy [~michael@] has joined #debian
00:57<somiaj>I am not sure what would be the correct resolution to your problem, but I don't think forcing a rename is it. I think you need to figure out the correct way with removing the /boot filesystem from your drive.
00:57-!-micy [~michael@] has left #debian []
00:58<somiaj>Enraged: well I'm unsure what would require files in /boot preventing you from unumount it correctly. That is the issue I would suggest resolving, as I said you can use lsof to figure out what program has files open inside of /boot
00:58<Enraged>jm_: In my fstab it does mount by UUID to /boot but this seems to be making 0 difference to the assignment of sdd
00:58-!-dash [~quassel@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:58<somiaj>I think the issue is you have a dead file system mounted and not sure the best way to clear that up

00:58-!-swirl [] has joined #debian
00:59<Enraged>somiaj: At this point forcing the rename temporarily would be sufficient; I just haven't found a way to do so.
00:59<somiaj>well I just found a forum that says someone can umount /boot just fine. What happens when you run umount /boot as root. Let's figure out what is keeping you from unmounting this file system properly

01:00<somiaj>Enraged: well you could try to just forcefully mount the new thing mount /dev/sdf1 /boot -- But I think we should figure out how to correclty umount /boot
01:00<jm_>Enraged: yes, but it's irrelevant if it's sdd or sdf or sdx
01:02-!-wd40s [] has joined #debian
01:02<Enraged>somiaj: I don't have any issue mounting sdf to any other location on the computer

03:47<somiaj>well when testing/unstalbe are close mixing those two can work but isn't suggested. But the drift between stable and testing gets big enough I wouldn't suggest even having both repos there as it could cause logic/dependencay issues due to changes in package conventions.

18:53<catern>how is technical policy made, ideally, in debian?
18:53<catern>just informally by the release managers and.. who else?
18:53<catern>the tech-ctte, ideally, is not supposed to make technical policy, and just mediate between maintainers?

19:03<catern>I would read the constitution but apparently that's not that good of a representation..
19:04<dondelelcaro>catern: not really; the general idea is meritocracy. The constitution just formalizes how it all fits together
19:05<catern>meritocracy, or do-ocracy?
19:06<dondelelcaro>well, do-ocracy, really

22:01<mju_>!minimal install
22:01<dpkg>See for required/recommended disk space. Debian keeps the base install relatively small for both hardware requirements and flexibility. As a consequence half the people are surprised that basic tools (like bzip2) are not "default" and half think that the existing base install contains too much (cron, python, ...). Also see <emdebian> <base install> <standard task>.
