00:34<worker123>I am experiencing network connections being dropped on a server running Debian Wheezy. One of the network administrators suggested increasing TCP memory. This seems to have resolved the issue. However, cat /proc/net/sockstat shows that the machine is nowhere near the memory thresholds. I'm worried that this might just be a coincidence and that the problem may re-occur. How can I be certain the TCP memory caused the problem ? Thanks.

05:50<SydM107>Hello, I was wondering if anyone can help me out with how to configure external usb keyboards on a debian laptop?
05:51<SydM107>my laptop has a integrated qwerty keyboard and I want to be able to use a belgian azerty usb keyboard
05:52<Pickers>why you wont use external keybord to laptop?
05:52<OdyX>SydM107: You want to use different layouts depending on the physical keyboard used ?
05:52<SydM107>but when I plug it in, the usb keyboard is mapped to qwerty and the integrated get's mapped to azerty
05:52-!-Hariharan [~harihare@1.23.210.128] has joined #debian
05:53<SydM107>OdyX, yep
05:53<OdyX>SydM107: that looks surprising; I'd bet they're both using the same layout (unless your USB keyboard is doing weird things)
05:53<SydM107>they arent using the same layout
05:54<OdyX>is it hard-wired ?
05:54<SydM107>they get switched once i plug it in, and when i disconnect the external, the integrated remains mapped to azerty
05:55<OdyX>under Debian ? Paint me surprised…
05:55<SydM107>OdyX, what do you mean by hard-wired?
05:55<OdyX>SydM107: some keyboards can use different layouts with a physical switch, but they're relatively uncommon (TypeMatrix comes to mind)(

05:56<SydM107>yeah, I would like to use the external keyboard for when I have to write in french since it's better adapted to the language
05:56<ansgar>OdyX: Well, you probably could have the keyboard-plugged-in event trigger setxkbmap.
05:57<OdyX>SydM107: I don't think there's a way to use different layouts depending on the physical keyboard used.
05:57<SydM107>no it's a cheap usb keyboard
05:57<OdyX>As ansgar writes; there's probably a way to trigger the layout change _for_all_connected_keyboards_ though.

05:58<SydM107>I wouldn't mind if all the layouts change when I plug in the external, however I need it to change back when I unplug it
05:59<SydM107>because I don't carry the usb keyboard with me everywhere
06:00<SydM107>oh and if it wasn't obvious, I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to linux.
06:00<ansgar>The simplest solution is probably to define multiple keyboard layouts in your DM and press the shortcut to switch to the right one ;)
06:00<ansgar>It's not automated though.

10:20<peter1138>alo, it will be automatically installed by... the installer, and updated when necessary.
10:20<qmi>alternatively, you can get Debian running on kFreeBSD kernel. see https://www.debian.org/ports/kfreebsd-gnu/
10:20<gnumech>@alo: Oh I see what you mean now, yes, the linux kernel and necessary headers come with the image from the repos
10:20<peter1138>alo, there are different versions available if you need them.
10:21<gnumech>@babilen: just you wait ;)
10:21<babilen>alo: Do you actually have a problem with installing a kernel or was your question more along the lines of: "Do I have to do anything special during the Debian installation to install a kernel or will that be done automatically for me?"

10:23<babilen>No, a kernel will be install automatically for you. You might get asked which package you want to install and I would recommend linux-image-amd64 which is a metapackage that will always depend on the latest kernel.

15:38<tilt>well, floss developers feel not bound to strech their powers thin to support older versions
15:39<tilt>i have a personal opinion about this, but i understand the reasoning
15:40<ixi>child lots of new stuff is coming
15:40<child>it makes no sense for me unless you start over again the entire system.. or just to exchange names
15:40<ixi>much newer kernel
15:40<ixi>new init system
15:40<ixi>tons of things
15:40<somiaj>child: basically different projects are being developed at different rates / maturity, and debian collects them all together and packages them. This is always happening in sid (unstable). These changes filter into jessie (testing), and about every 3 years this process freezes and focus is put on fixing all the bugs in jessie until the release, and at the moment of the release this cycle starts anew.
15:41<child>thank you guys for explaining

15:42<somiaj>Only bugs of a certain minimum severity are required to be fixed during the freeze (though others can be fixed too), and once all bugs of a minimum severity (well call these release-critical bugs) are fixed, jessie is ready to be released and is frozen in that state execpt for security fixes, some rare bug fixes, and ocasionally backporting new hardware into the stock kernel.
15:43<child>so in general a system is made by collecting sources and converting to .deb packages? copy and paste and after solve bugs?

15:43<tilt>;-) child
15:43<somiaj>With the goal of any such fix being nothing major should change so any platform/software built on top of the stable system will run after any such upgrade.
15:44<jordanm>child: there is a bit more than just copy and paste... often software is altered to integrate with the OS eg the location it places files may be altered to meet standards
15:45<somiaj>child: yea a big part of a matianers job is to integrate the software into the debian system which depending on the software can require little to a lot of work.
15:45<child>I see it like part of process of copy and paste
15:45<child>I see
15:46<valdyn>thats like saying maths is copying and pasting numbers and operators ;)

15:46<child>numbers
15:46<tilt>nah then it's called physics
15:46<tilt>;D
15:46<child>so I think its about copying
15:48<tilt>child: you should not let that one experience with a very old defect that everyone forget caring about make you judge an entire operating system development community

15:48<tilt>;D enough banter
15:48*tilt goes play with his new camera
15:49<somiaj>child: all the binaries are built. But that is the power of free software. We don't need to reinvent the wheel anytime, only refine it and fine tune it to fit within the debian system.

15:51<somiaj>yea and doesn't seem related. debian is a very large collection of packages, any single install only uses a certain collection of them depending on what the user needs/wants. The base or minimial system is a small set of 'core' components that are considered essential in all installs. These are very minimial but are enough to work/start with if you want to customize what you install.

If I click that button it just freezes, and journalctl says "gnome-session [...] Failed to call logout: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not prov

20:34<njs>any idea what could be wrong? Or even where to look for logs? It's been a few years since I've had this kind of problem and my old skills are apparently out-of-date :-)
