02:08<shadow>get back from lunch, RAM is in a legal sized envelope taped to the casing.

06:28<child>but its not what nvidia setup says
06:28<Apollo>follow the instructions on the wiki
06:29<Apollo>nvidia setup tends to be horribly wrong and very very very general
06:31<child>I think its very unstable too
06:32<child>looking here at this instructions
06:33<Apollo>follow the wiki and you should be fine

06:34<somiaj>if you use the dkms packages the module will automatlly recompile for the new kernel when it is installed (though sometimes this isn't true when the driver won't compile against the newer kernel, but in stable this shouldnt' be an issue unless you use backports)
06:37<child>according to the instructions its going to install the previous gcc version... and do the same thing as compiling by hands
06:37<Apollo>somiaj: aye, I've had some edgecases where it went bork
06:38<Apollo>someone installed a transitional kernel, and not the virtual package, so it got stuck in limbo somewhere

16:43<devil_>toastergod: 2.0.3 is in sid,

19:21<drfz>as soon as mounted when change happen ;) understood
19:21<somiaj>now what are the permission on /home/drafz ?
19:22<drfz>you mean you can force perm. on the mountpoint , not on the volume itself? what if perm = 777 before i mount it ?
19:22<drfz>home drafz are 700
19:22<somiaj>that is why you cannot share things from within that directory
19:23<drfz>okay
19:23<drfz>not readable by group
19:23<drfz>?
19:23<somiaj>samba is an application that needs to be able to read thigns to share them, since samba cannot read things it won't share
19:23<somiaj>well you have two methods, one is 755, but then everyone can read it, you could have 750 but then you would have to add the samba process to the group that owns the directory so samba can read the contents on the inside but other applications/users won't be able to
19:23<drfz>so in order top make smb able to share it from this mount point , i need to change perm of /home/drafz
19:23<somiaj>the method you choose is up to your needs.
19:24<drfz>like : 775?
19:24<somiaj>755 is probabaly better than 775
19:24<somiaj>debain defaults to 755 so you manually changed the perms
19:24<drfz>RX for grp and everyone
19:24<drfz>okay
19:25<drfz>no drawback to have user home to 755 ?
19:25<drfz>i presume there are ...
19:25<somiaj>again depends on your uses.
19:25<somiaj>for the most part nkow. All it means is anyone who is a user on your machine or any application can read inside of yoru personal data in /home
19:25<drfz>okay, choose another mount point is better in this case
19:26<drfz>that is what i don't want
19:26<somiaj>I would say unless you have some multieuser box where you are worried about the privacy of your home it is just fine.
19:26<drfz>no one should be able to read drafz
19:26<drfz>700 .. i missed that
19:27<somiaj>then yes you would need either 1) a different mount piont, 2) use 750 and put samba into a group that is allowed to read inside your drafz, 3) make another dir insdie of drafz that has your private/personal stuff that cannot be read but this allows some access to drafz
19:27<drfz>thanks
19:27<somiaj>gain choice is up to design, and how you want to adminstrate your data.
19:27<somiaj>sounds like another amount point and maybe putting a link inside /home/drafz to tha tmount point would work that way you get the best of both worlds

19:30<Argyle>just cat any file
19:30<somiaj>Argyle: no, there are some things that are set up private by default, but on debain /home/userdir is 755 unless you change it
19:30<drfz>no
19:31<drfz>SMB is root
19:31<somiaj>Argyle: in his case he changed /home/userdir to 700 which as a side effect also blocked samba from reading inside his dir.
19:31<drfz>a ps -aux|grep smb gave me ROOT smbd etc etc
19:31<drfz>yup
19:32<drfz>execpt samba is run with root authority
19:32<drfz>in this case , why can't it read /home/drafz?
19:32<somiaj>hmm, you are correct there drfz, I don't see a seperate samba user (I thought there was one). But when the user authenticates with samba, it is given some set of nonroot permissions
19:33<drfz>translation of permission between 2 OS ?.
19:33<drfz>win can't read EXT4 perm
19:33<somiaj>well samba also manages permissions either via the linux system or you can add samba only users though its system. In either case it probabaly gives these users some limite permisions on your system and not root. At this point you may ahve to talk to someone more familar with samba than I
19:34<somiaj>either ways it is a permission/user issue. How exactly samba assigns permissions to the person requesting a share I am not sure on the details.
19:34<drfz>can i run samba with another user auth . ?
19:34<drfz>like .... drafz ?
19:34<somiaj>you can set up shares to require you to login, and then permisions is dependent on who logins, let me check the samba.conf file see what it does for guest permisions
19:35<drfz>guest ok = no
19:35<drfz>that's in my conf fil
19:36<drfz>but the user i log to access these data isn't drafz

19:36<somiaj>yea you may need someone who is a bit more familr with how samba handels permisions to answer the details of your question. But the short answer was the user asking for the share has to be able to read the data, and it wasn't, hence you couldn't share it.

19:39<somiaj>the result is then the user can actually get inside your home dir but has to 'guess' filenames, so allowing that would be slightly more secure than giving them full read and execute perms, but not relaly make it impossible for things to be read inside
19:40<somiaj>drfz: correct, and by they need to enter, in terms of permisions they need the execute bit on the directory to 'enter it'
