12:13<Zathraz>ah. The Windows bootloader is all allong the tunnelvision of Redmond: there is only one true OS and no need for others.
12:13<rick88>Yeah
12:14<rick88>It worked fine before 8.1 when I could use Debian installer and start it from Windows.
12:14<Zathraz>so as long as you do not replace the one and just (:P) bootloader you will end up in windows
12:14<Zathraz>euh.... Are you sure you are talking about Debian and not Ubuntu?
12:15<rick88>Yes, Debian 7
12:16<rick88>The auto installer isn't working on 8.1 yet. It's an .exe you run after you pu the img on some kind of media

12:18<rick88>in what sense?

12:47<garrettr_>When managing a Debian package repository (https://wiki.debian.org/RepositoryFormat) is there any reason to use or not use the clear-signed InRelease vs. Release with a detached signature in Release.gpg?
12:47<garrettr_>Are they completely interchangeable?

15:06<grove>I've tried asking about this before, but something came up so I didn't have time to follow up, but I have a weird situation where 'apt-get upgrade' won't do anything, and 'apt-get dist-upgrade' wants to install systemd (+ two dependencies), without removing anything. I've collected the output of 'apt-get update', 'apt-get upgrade', 'apt-get dist-upgrade', 'apt-cache policy' (for each of the packages and without arguments) and 'aptitude why' for each of the ...

18:34<somiaj>you can only use one or the other, but man 5 interfaces or look at the debian wiki will show you many examples of how to set up an interfaces file to use a static ip
18:34<lsbit>then I tried with init.d/restart
18:34<somiaj>if you prefer to use network manager, you can use it instead, just configure it using its gui tools for a static ip
18:34<somiaj>no

18:35<lsbit>well I didn't understod network manager good then
18:35<awal>https://wiki.debian.org/NetworkConfiguration lsbit
18:36<lsbit>I've checked that page
18:36<somiaj>well it is your choice, if you use the interfaces file, the scripts 'ifup' and 'ifdown' use info from that file to bring up and down the interfaces
18:36<lsbit>and read it but I'm done something wrong
18:36<somiaj>so once you modify your interfaces file, ifdown eth0 (to bring it down) then ifup eth0 (to bring it up with the new rules)

19:24<somiaj>I noticed that you had 192.168.1.something as your old address but changed it to 192.168.0.something -- you changed the subnets, possibaly the two machines can't talk to eachother cause of this
19:24<somiaj>might need to change the static ip to 192.168.1.100
19:25<lsbit>maybe
19:25<lsbit>I'll try :)
19:26<lsbit>great
19:26<lsbit>It works now
19:26<somiaj>now some things to worry about
19:26<somiaj>1
19:26<lsbit>thank you very much
19:27<lsbit>I'm listening
19:27<somiaj>1) your router is assigning dhcp address, you may want to look at its configuration so you ensure it is not giving any other machine 192.168.1.100 as an address
19:27<somiaj>usually you can configure it to only give address in a certain range and you use numbers out side of that range for static ips

19:35<lsbit>in fact it dont work

19:39<somiaj>you need to provide more info and hit enter less. Again you need all your local machines to be on the same subnet so they can talk to eachother and you need to configure your router to point to the correct ip of the server.

22:43<SeanChiarot>wondering if I could get a hand getting Debian to send emails through a relay server, we've setup a wordpress blog, we'd like it to send emails via a relay server setup on 2008 r2 server, the relay is using Alt-N MDaemon Pro, this was working fine on Ubuntu box that got damaged from a fire. I've tried setting up xim4 but I've had no luck getting it to work, any help would be greatly appreicated.

23:12<shadow>presume that SeanChiarot the Ubuntu box stopped working since the fire?
23:13<SeanChiarot>you are safe to presume correctly
23:14<SeanChiarot>I've used Debian in the past so I figured great time to change them, then they throw this mail relay thing on me

23:14<SeanChiarot>Tried setting up exim... -_-
23:14<shadow>could do an ubuntu chroot if you had to
23:15<shadow>there's better ways to do it but I understand not much about mail servers
23:15<SeanChiarot>I never setup the mail relay in the 1st place :(
23:15<shadow>oh
23:15<shadow>good luck to you though
23:15<SeanChiarot>It was setup 6 years ago by someone who left the company -_-
23:15<shadow>it will work, with some studying
23:16<SeanChiarot>yeah, sadly with today be monday & it not working, I am now under the gun as it where'
23:16<somiaj>SeanChiarot: do you have an mta you prefer to use?
23:17<SeanChiarot>Nope, open to any that will work :)
23:17<somiaj>well exim is the default and for a relay might be the easiet to use
23:17<somiaj>I was just suggesting debian provides choice so if there is an mta you are use to using/configuring you could install that mta
23:19<SeanChiarot>Ahhh, gotcha, nope, no prefrence, I've just setup and used Debian for more of a 'work station' setup not really a 'server' but I am more firmilar with this and CentOS, as the client wanted a easy to use GUI, I went with Deb... no idea why I can't get this relay working though :(
