04:58<DebbieNooby>Hi all! Anyone knows a way to deal with high latency connections? My aim as I understand it is to increase time that system/ network driver waits for response. In instance, I have connection with high latency and high dl/upl speed (3g). I start watching video on youtube. It starts hashing but after some period of time hashing stops due to high ping and delay waiting limit exceed

05:01<valdyn>DebbieNooby: 3g latency may be high for you, but its not high compared to intercontinental and its low compared to sat
05:02<valdyn>DebbieNooby: so your issue is probably something else
05:04<valdyn>DebbieNooby: why do you think there would be a max delay in the *driver* anyway?

05:08<DebbieNooby>Im loosing packets. If there was stable ping of 800 it should be ok. Ok, better call it problem with unstable connection and packet loss. I want to force all network subsystem to wait to reestablish connection and continue to do everything it was doing earlier. I guess i got it. Servers have their own timeout limits to. They probably may just close sessions

05:10<valdyn>DebbieNooby: maybe your reception is really bad too
05:11<DebbieNooby>valdyn: It must be. I'm not digging to deep right now but it seems logical that client will not wait response for each packet forever
05:11<valdyn>DebbieNooby: i think 3g adds like 150ms to ping, thats all
05:11<linuxator>tasksel: apt-get failed (100) ,how to fix this?
05:12<DebbieNooby>Sounds like hardware problem with 3g modem. Thanks! That's an idea

10:59<DusXMT>hssrh: okay, and where exactly did you get it from? There are dozens of different package formats
11:00<hssrh>it come from here http://www.irssi.org/download#sources
11:01<jordanm>hssrh: ignore what you downloaded and just use "apt-get install irssi" or the equivalent in something like synaptic
11:01<DusXMT>Ah. Well, you'll find no executables in a source package. irssi is packaged for debian, so you shouldn't need to compile it from source
11:01<hssrh>how so
11:02<DusXMT>hssrh: because it contains the files to create the executable from, not the executable itself, but unless you have a real reason to create it out of these files, just go with the official package from apt

15:47<DusXMT>rfreeman: This is from the INSTALL file of the UW ttyp font: http://paste.debian.net/139166/
15:48<rfreeman>mk2374, try things like cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda5 crypt1 try various partitions sda2 sda3 sda4 etc
15:48<rfreeman>mk2374, once LUKS is opened, you might need vgscan vgchange -a y to open the LVMs, and finally mount -a or similar
15:49<mk2374>ah, thanks, that might do the trick
15:49<rfreeman>mk2374, cfdisk /dev/sda or similar might show you faster which partition is which
15:49<DusXMT>rfreeman: so /etc/fonts/conf.d/70-no-bitmaps.conf is most likely the culprit

22:30<twb>I think I've asked this before and the answer was "can't be done", but I'll check again...
22:31<twb>I want to extract a subtree from a whole bunch of .debs -- e.g. just the manpages, or just the logcheck whitelists
22:31<twb>You'd think that dpkg -x with --path-exclude and --path-include would work, but -x doesn't seem to care about --path-exclude
22:32<twb>So the only ways I know are to either use -x to extract everything, then delete the parts I don't want; or to use ar and tar by hand (which is painful because I have to work out if it's .tar.gz or .tar.xz)
22:32<twb>Am I doing it wrong, or what?

22:55<Celelibi>Well, actually I wonder if it is really used since I only transfer on my USB HDD.
22:56<twb>-z is kinda pointless unless it's over network, and I would suggest ssh-level -oCompress=yes in that case
22:56<rfreeman>Celelibi, did you tried --force
22:57<Celelibi>Yes it is pointless, but does rsync compress data for real?
22:57<abrotman>It can
22:57<twb>Celelibi: anyway I can't see any other issues like -H &c
22:57<twb>Celelibi: it's probably something suckky wrt. your USB HDD

22:59<Celelibi>rfreeman: what is --force for?
22:59<rfreeman>Celelibi, it was not for rsync.... nevermind ;)
22:59<Celelibi>wow, I just restarted rsync without -z.

23:01<twb>OK so the load was zlib
23:01<Celelibi>So yes, rsync probably uselessly compress and decompress data when -z is provided.
23:01<twb>I'd also suggest using -i, -v or --progress instead of -P.
23:01<Celelibi>Not very smart.

23:07<Celelibi>BTW, how does rsync detect and recreate sparse files?
23:07<Celelibi>or cp
23:07<rudi_s>Celelibi: rsync does if it, if you tell it with --sparse.
23:08<twb>rudi_s: that's -S ;-P
23:08<twb>Celelibi: I *think* it just looks for runs of NUL
23:08<rudi_s>Same for cp, --sparse=auto, man cp.
23:08<rudi_s>twb: Oh, sorry. Didn't look at the backlog.
23:08<twb>Did you know about gnu cp --reflink=auto
23:08<twb>it makes btrfs more sexy
23:09<Celelibi>man cp say it the default is to create a sparse file if the input is sparse as well.
23:09<Celelibi>So I guess there is a way to detect when a file is sparse or not.

23:11<Celelibi>But this won't tell where are the holes. But right, the man cp doesn't say it would keep the holes where they were.
23:14<twb>FWIW the only interesting sparse parts of rsync source I can see are using lseek and ftruncatef, but I don't understand the code.
23:14<twb>http://sprunge.us/jFbO?c
23:15<Celelibi>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sparse_file#Piping <-- wow, just wow.
23:15<Celelibi>I'd never have thought you could use /proc/self/fd/0 like this.
23:15<twb>That's just linux idiom for /dev/stdin
23:15<twb>Or <&1 or -
23:16<twb>It (probably?) won't work on debian kfbsd unless you load mount the linux-compat /proc
23:17<twb>Celelibi: more interesting is stuff like diff -u <(foo x) <(foo y)
23:17<Celelibi>But this means that pipe:[200442193] is a valid filename.
23:17<twb>Celelibi: er, no, it means /proc/self/fd/0 is a valid filename.
23:17<Celelibi>it's a symlink.
23:18<twb>Here I see lrwx------ 1 twb twb 64 Jan 5 15:17 /proc/self/fd/0 -> /dev/pts/4
23:18<Celelibi>echo foo | ls -l /proc/self/fd/0
23:18<twb>Oh nm I see what you mean
23:18<twb>I dunno about that, I guess that's just a human representation. I doubt it works if you just type in pipe:[]... into open(2)
23:19<Celelibi>I would like to try. :D
23:19<Celelibi>Like, perform a readlink and then perform a open on that string.
23:20<Celelibi>% echo foo | (cat $(readlink /proc/self/fd/0))
23:20<Celelibi>cat: pipe:[200484672]: No such file or directory
23:20<dselect>foo | (cat $(readlink /proc/self/fd/0))
23:20<Celelibi>too bad.
23:21<Celelibi>dselect: I guess you didn't understand my command.
23:21<dselect>Celelibi: I don't know, could you explain it?
23:21<Celelibi>:)
23:25<Celelibi>twb: that ftruncate or seek+write just set the end of the file at the right offset.
23:25<Celelibi>Hence creating a hole in the file if the previous blocks haven't been written into.

23:58<Finetundra>should hash -r return anything?
