01:32<jmcnaught>if you are switching from fglrx back to the open source radeon driver, you also need to remove the module blacklist that fglrx adds.. it'll be in /etc/modprobe.d with a filename with "fglrx" in it
01:32<jmcnaught>AndyJ: see above before reboot
01:32<AndyJ>OK back onto recovery mode we go. :)

01:55<rayzer>i would try the official installer first,
01:56<rayzer>jmcnaught: dkms?
01:56<jmcnaught>rayzer: the official installer can be difficult to clean up after, it's not something we generally recommend around here
01:56<jmcnaught>rayzer: the debian packages automate the DKMS process so it happens effortlessly every time the kernel is updated
01:58<rayzer>jmcnaught: if all else fails? Dont tell me that the OSS ati driver is a good option? But okey, i wont recomend the official amd driver.

01:59<jmcnaught>rayzer: the fglrx packages are the official proprietary driver, packaged to integrate well with Debian. The open source radeon driver is also pretty good, albeit not as fast as the proprietary one

02:13<jmcnaught>rayzer: indeed. backports is pretty easy though, and safe to recommend to most people. it's basically newer versions from Testing that are recompiled to work on Stable, much safer than installing Jessie packages as they are (which is also not recommended :)

12:08<gernot>deZillium, the systems crash when they try to resume from suspended state. There are bug reports for it already. Thankfully, I could downgrade with a package from snapshots.d.o which happened to be mentioned before.
12:09<timmc>gernot: Huh, I get something different -- a tight suspend/wake loop.
12:09<timmc>It's as good as a crash, though.
12:10<deZillium>so it's not actually affecting the use of the system (outside suspend/wake). can't wait it out instead of downgrading?
12:10<gernot>timmc, I guess you could say that. Since all the computers do is make clicking sounds and flashing lights I don't know what exactly is happening.
12:11<timmc>deZillium: Depends how long that waiting would likely be. :-)

22:17<birch>I'm having some weird behavior with current wheezy 64bit. The two significant event before the weird behavior are i took a round of updates, and I had to do a hard restart (the first restart after the updates) because I ran out of ram. The main problem is that resume on suspend is now broken. When I try to wake it up, the first thing I see is the bios boot splash and then the boot loader. When I finally log back in, iceweasel has registered
22:17<birch>a session crash but there wasn't anything obvious in the fsck on boot. gnome shell is also slow and is now occasionally crashing. Any thoughts?
22:17<abrotman>birch: this was covered in a blob post ..

22:19<abrotman>eh, not quite?
22:19<birch>abrotman, it looks like the problem to me.
22:20<birch>i took that kernel update just before this issue occurred. the gnome shell issue are probably unrelated.
22:21<birch>Linux debian 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.65-1 x86_64 GNU/Linux
22:21<abrotman>you can verify with Ben probably
22:22<birch>yup, that's it.

22:23<birch>i'll just wait until it gets pushed. as long as i know what the problem is i can stop worrying. my boot time is fast enough that i can survive without suspend.
22:23<birch>i was just worried that hard restart had done some file system damage that wasn't showing up. so i'm cool with this. thanks for the hep :D
