00:00<krc>but I'd really like to get some concrete info to send to the Debian devs and to Intel
00:00<krc>Especially since Debian is in freeze
00:01<krc>But while I am not very good at debugging in general, this takes the cake
00:02<krc>a regular program, or even X or something, you can put through GDB and such

02:26<centrx>youtube-dl also supports many other video sites in addition to youtube

02:28<awal>mps-youtube, have you tried it? centrx
02:28<centrx>I have not no, it looks cool from the description

02:31<awal>both minitube and mps-youtube aren't in wheezy (rmadison info)
02:32<DusXMT>awal: it's easy to write a short script to watch youtube videos using mplayer and youtube-dl
02:33<DusXMT>I usually just download a video with youtube-dl, and once the firstcouple of % are loaded, I start mplayer on the unfinished file
02:34<DusXMT>You have seeking (be able to go backwards in time, now forward, of course), it's faster, and you can keep the video afterwards :)

02:38<awal>DusXMT, with mplayer/smplayer you dont really need youtube-dl. mplayer have a option for watch youtube videos directly

02:39<awal>no tried it yet but i seen that option in smplayer tools.
02:40<DusXMT>awal: cool. I do it the way I do because I like to keep the video sometimes, what if I feel like watching it at some later time (if it's a song, for example)?

02:43<awal>DusXMT, what I said is in smplayer sid version. i dont know if that option is present in wheezy version. and it's easy, just past the youtube link and and smplayer opens the content
02:44<awal>probably one can save it and pause/play. i have no access to my jessie machine now. sorry i cant verify

05:14<dpkg>apt-file is a utility used to find which package owns a given file - or list files in a package - even if it is not installed: "aptitude install apt-file && apt-file update" ; then "apt-file search filename" to see a list of packages containing filename (can also use a regular expression; see man apt-file). You can also search online, ask me about <pdo>. See also <judd-file>, <auto-apt>, <dlocate>.

05:15<dutchfish>bsc, yes, i got that, with apt-file you can find out which file belongs to which package if any
05:17<bsc>dutchfish, ok.. lemme try that
05:17<dutchfish>bsc, you need to keep track however of manually installed gems, because apt isnt aware of that; hence i use apt-file to also find out if it belongs to any package

05:17<bsc>dutchfish, as of now, I am not considering manually installed gems.. Just debian packages.. so i think apt-file and apt-cache will suffice

05:20<dutchfish>bsc, last thingy, since apt-file has no auto update feature, you need to keep it in sync with the curent repos; i.o.w. apt-file update; apt-file also keeps DB's separate for each user, that is also a handy feature.

07:47<SynrGy>i don't consider 5M of physical memory excessive
07:47<SynrGy>i don't have a number for sysv

07:49<SynrGy>on my low ram systems i don't use GNOME. i use LXDE
07:49<mitt>SynrGy: How's that? Why Fedora, for example, has 150 MB more memory without startup apps
07:49<SynrGy>i also dump the file manager from memory. don't need it
07:49<mitt>with the same XFCE
07:49<SynrGy>huh? you're confusing me. what does starting up apps have to do with how much ram systemd itself consumes?
07:50<SynrGy>looking at a second system here with systemd, systemd's footprint on that is only 4M real memory
07:51<mitt>I mean, if you make startup services the same, use same environment, why back then Fedora is so heavy? or openSUSE? Or even Xubuntu
07:51<SynrGy>please restate that as a debian support question.
07:52<SynrGy>i don't know anything about those distros
07:52<musca>e.g. different graphic drivers can cause such differences. I noticed, with the nvidia blob every single application holds more memory.
07:53<SynrGy>ah. i can't say i've noticed ... on systems where ram is scarce, nvidia is not in use. tends to be intel.
07:53<SynrGy>on systems where ram is plentiful, i haven't cared to microoptimize
07:53<mitt>Gosh, and after that they claim "Debian is worse that [] coz the write
07:53<mitt>their drivers
07:54<SynrGy>after what? and "they"? i'm losing patience with this ... if you've come to rant, it's OT. if you have a support question about debian, please ask it plainly.
07:55<musca>SynrGy: yes, i didn't investigate further - RAM is plentiful :)
07:55<mitt>sorry, I'm still thinking about systemd

14:00<pentaheadron>I'm having trouble configuring my tftp server for network boot but I the tftp server isn't starting, I have tried everything online, to no avail :/. (debian wheezy, tftpd-hpa) when I "sudo service tftpd-hpa start" it says its starting, but when "service tftpd-hpa status" is run, it says it failed. When checking /var/log/syslog, it says: "in.tftpd[17838]: cannot bind to local IPv4 socket: Address already in use". What does this mean?
14:03<KingOfDos>that you've got another service which is using the local port, on which you're binding the listening socket.
14:03<KingOfDos>that is, you sure there isn't another tftp server active?

14:09<pentaheadron>but thanks for your help :)
14:09<KingOfDos>pentaheadron: maybe the 'stop' command isn't working? you should at least be able to see some process which is using the port
14:10<KingOfDos>that is, when you: sudo service tftp-hpa stop
14:10<KingOfDos>after that, you should not see a tftp process running with: ps aux|grep tftp
14:10<KingOfDos>if so, the 'service stop' is broken. had that a few times with tftp-hpa

But then it says it can't detect my cd-rom drive...which it is running off of. I tried dropping to a shell and mounting /dev/sr0 manually, but got an input/output error.
