01:09<thatDUDE>Thanks awal, i'll give that a try.
01:09<jm_>is it USB? any kernel logs when it happens?
01:09<awal>thatDUDE, if you prefer graphical interface check xkeycaps
01:10<jm_>ahh wait, macbook - that sounds like a laptop
01:11<thatDUDE>It is not USB, its the macbook pro's physical keyboard. It just stops functioning, the trackpad continues to work

01:15<thatDUDE>yes
01:16<jm_>do you see them flashing when this happens?
01:16<thatDUDE>no, i usually test out the caps key and realize its froze because the LED doesnt come on
01:16<jm_>but since you say touchpad continues to work I would recommend to connect to it from another system when this happens and see if anything is in logs, kernel messages etc.
01:17<thatDUDE>that seems like aea good id

01:26<jm_>yeah ssh would be best, then as root 'cd /var/log' and 'ls -lrt', look at all the files changed in last N minutes (they are listed at the bottom), and as user 'dmesg' to get kernel messages and look at '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' (last two steps can obviously be done as root too)
01:29<thatDUDE>awesome! thanks jm_

01:44<kalin00b>So my boyfriend used a backup i made of my installation of kali and ran into INIT: cannot execute /sbin/getty problem
01:44<kalin00b>he went into centos was unable to grant himself permission
01:44<kalin00b>i saw a linuxquestions.org problem where someone else was denied permission and had this error
01:45<kalin00b>am i crazy for thinking that my specific to me kali that was running at the time rejected his machine
01:45<jm_>!kali
01:45<dpkg>Kali Linux (http://www.kali.org/) is a security and penetration testing distribution from the creators of <backtrack>. It is based on Debian, but it is not Debian and is not supported in #debian. Seek help in #kali-linux on chat.freenode.net or http://forums.kali.org/ . Also ask me about <based on debian>.
01:45<kalin00b>okay i get that the other guy had debian though
01:45<kalin00b>on the forums
01:46<kalin00b>and that chatroom is dead
01:46<kalin00b>i was asking in general would this happen

01:49<kalin00b>blah okay
01:49<kalin00b>seems odd that someone else with a debian would have the problem and it be permission related tho

01:55<jm_>my advice would be to boot with a rescue media and check file's permissions/ownership/md5sum and compare it to what's set in a proper kali installation, but they should be able to help you further
01:55<kalin00b>theyre identical and mine works perfect

03:15<InFierno> hey guys anyone around - having some issues with installing php5-apc & php5 imagick on debian squeeze - says it requires an older version of php5-common (5.3.29-1~dotdeb.0) but 5.4.36-0+deb7u3 is installed - any way to force override it or is it a build from source job?
03:16<jm_>dotdeb packages are not supported here, see /msg dpkg dotdeb

03:54<InFierno>oh jm_ any chance we will see some way to manually configure routed (via virtual mac addressing) in the installer
03:55<jm_>InFierno: why would you need to do this in the installer?
03:56<InFierno>Because I cant access the network till after install and config - and means i have to keep using full install dvds
03:56<jm_>why would routed help in that respect?
03:57<InFierno>routing* Because I cant configure the netmasks and broadcasts first - then use a minimal ISO (seems far more efficient as I just install an SSH server, then work from there)

15:20<awal>r00t_, the best solution is: use debian wheezy then install openbox and configure it like crunchbang or better. you really can get that with debian minimal + lightdm + openbox

17:17<jhutchins>lucasvv: Are you familiar with how dpkg handles config files?
17:18<lucasvv>jhutchins: I suppose so... What I know is that it detects when a default file has been changed, and gives the choice to replace, examine, leave alone, etc.
17:19<jhutchins>lucasvv: Right, so you should be okay changing that file.
17:19<lucasvv>jhutchins: I just want to avoid, where possible, to have to deal with such choices during an upgrade
17:19<jhutchins>lucasvv: You could use something like etckeeper to do version control on config files, but it's overkill for one server.
17:20<lucasvv>jhutchins: I am a bit lazy, you know :)
17:21<lucasvv>jhutchins: I suppose I will just use a file conf.d/z_customizations in which I will override any settings in the default config files
17:21<jhutchins>lucasvv: Also a good policy.

18:13<Schwappy>I have noticed that when i did go from ubuntu server to debian, using unattended-upgrades, i never get any notices about that my system needs to be rebooted. With ubuntu server i got it pretty much once a week. I just wounder if i have missed some option or if i can feel fully upgraded without rebooting?

18:14<devil>Schwappy: you only need to reboot into a new kernel
18:14<devil>on the other hand rebooting after upgrades does not hurt on a desktop, server of course wants to run

18:15<Schwappy>I have read about ksplice etc but i have never tried that, so you can do kernel upgrades without reboot. But last time i checked my wheezy box it was over 130 days uptime and it seems to be just fine, but i guess it would be great to verify that all services that has been updated has been restarted
18:15<Schwappy>It's a server without gui, debian wheezy
18:16<devil>well, it is basicaly up to you. some servers run for years

19:56<cheapie>OK, so I just had to reinstall Debian on this box (sort of a long story...). Anyway, before the reinstall, I had the "radeon" driver installed and working for my Radeon HD 7770. Now, I can't seem to make it work. Minetest runs, but only at around 1/4 the frame rate it used to, despite being installed the same way as before. And yes, I did make sure the driver was installed, and the firmware is installed as well. I'm using sid, just like before the
19:56<cheapie>reinstall. I have also tried it without an xorg.conf, as well as one that simply tells it to use the "radeon" driver for my video card, with no luck. Any ideas?

22:26<cheapie>For anybody that remembers me from earlier, I found the problem. Turns out I was not in the "video" group, and a "sudo usermod -a -G video cheapie" fixed my issues.

23:46<Cylus>When I have the GNASH browser plugin installed, many site assume that I want to use it and disable their fallback options. How do I set it up so in Iceweasel one specific site, and *only* that specific site, knows I have GNASH? There is literally only one place that I want to use it, so I have to keep installing and uninstalling it, which is annoying.
