00:00<squirrel`>like starcraft.....we only usually played lost temple
00:00<squirrel`>lol
00:00<shadow>yeah it's like that
00:00<shadow>get tired of that map and people whine about it, but that's how it goes
00:00<squirrel`>is it in the mod i d/led or do i have to d/l the 1.6?
00:00<shadow>I'm connected and joined to hosted game from BlackHoleHost2
00:01<shadow>I don't know what 1.6 is
00:01<squirrel`>can i play you without downloading the 1.6gb
00:01<shadow>yeah
00:01<squirrel`>k
00:01-!-tezza [~smuxi@147.69.31.214] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:01<shadow>with ~/.spring/games/balanced_annihilation-v8.07.sdz in place, "Chat" tab in Spring Lobby to connect, then "Battlelist" tab to see hosted games
00:02<shadow>join BlackHoleHost2 it should prompt for you to download the map needed
00:02<squirrel`>i need to find where to put this file
00:03<squirrel`>would it be in USR
00:03<shadow>~ means $HOME
00:03<squirrel`>i found the binary
00:03<shadow>oh...
00:03<squirrel`>but i dont know where the actual data is
00:03<ryouma>so you install springlobby and then what?
00:03<shadow>did springlobby pull in "spring" engine?
00:04<shadow>or no
00:04<squirrel`>i gotta find where to put the ba-v8.00.sdz
00:04<Gandolf>Well, shit.
00:04<Gandolf>Not even UNetBootin worked.
00:04<squirrel`>seriously?
00:04<Gandolf>Maybe something is wrong with the distro file itself.
00:04<shadow>unetbootin doesn't work usually
00:04-!-ElVillano [~Alberto@190.73.133.63] has joined #debian
00:04<squirrel`>it has for me for kali
00:04<squirrel`>and other obscure distros
00:04<shadow>I find that hybrid ISO should just be cat > /dev/device
00:05<squirrel`>burn a dvd
00:05<Gandolf>Clean install.
00:05<Gandolf>After trying Universal USB, LiLi, and UNB, I'm at a loss :P
00:05<squirrel`>burn a dvd
00:05<squirrel`>is the best bet
00:05<shadow>squirrel`: ba-v8.00.sdz is too old although, no one hosts games with that version anymore
00:05<squirrel`>ifranrecorder
00:05-!-thunderrd [~thunderrd@119.42.78.142] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
00:05<Gandolf>Ha.
00:05<squirrel`>odd
00:05<Gandolf>If I had a disc...
00:05<squirrel`>its the only one on the site
00:05<shadow>http://springfiles.com/spring/games/balanced-annihilation-49
00:06<Gandolf>I don't quite trust my 32-GB USB stick anyway, but it properly installs the Debian netinst.

00:06<squirrel`>ok i got the mod
00:06<squirrel`>gandolf
00:06<squirrel`>ill help you later
00:06<squirrel`>ummm
00:07<squirrel`>we are all genius in here
00:07<shadow>springlobby preferences you should make unitsync library point to /usr/lib/spring/libunitsync.so
00:07<squirrel`>sadly my head is mixed with all kinds of stuff:)
00:07<shadow>and spring executable point to /usr/games/spring
00:07<squirrel`>where do i put this file
00:07<squirrel`>yes
00:07<squirrel`>the binary is there
00:07<squirrel`>but where do the resources go
00:08<squirrel`>ill check usr/lib
00:08<Gandolf>string user; bool Dumb; if Dumb { Console.Write("{0} is dumb", user); }
00:08<Gandolf>Or something.
00:08<shadow>the mod doesn't go in /usr
00:08<squirrel`>i found that libsync
00:08<Gandolf>I'm the user. I'm dumb.
00:08<Gandolf>But I still can't even.
00:09<squirrel`>should i try throwing the mod in the spring dir
00:09<squirrel`>in usr/lkib
00:09<shadow>should be /home/username/.spring/games/
00:09<shadow>that's what I meant by ~/.spring/games
00:09<squirrel`>so i have to make my own directory
00:10<squirrel`>but thats impossible
00:10<shadow>it should already be there? maybe I am mistaken
00:10<Gandolf>Alright, I think that's it for now. Thanks for all the help, fellows. If I ever realise I'm stupid again, I'll come by.
00:10*Gandolf waves.

This works when I try it through a web browser, but when I add it to my sources.list it 404's every time, even though the same url gets redirected properly on the web page...how does apt handle this?

11:16<asklepian>...somehow

11:17<sney>well, all the b43 installer does is download some crap from broadcom, figure out which one is for your nic, and stick it in /lib/firmware.
11:17<sney>you should be able to do all that manually if you don't have a network connection.
11:17<asklepian>I haven't been able to yet
11:18<asklepian>the firmware-b43-installer package actually wget's a file as a part of its script

11:19<sney>ok, so unpack it to /lib/firmware. the installer isn't compiling anything. the file you need is already there

11:19<asklepian>really....
11:19<asklepian>ok, I'll reinstall a base system to get rid of all the crap I did before
11:19<sney>that's the thing about firmware. it's closed source. debian can't touch it or do anything else

11:23<asklepian>and that doesn't make sense to me

11:23<cheapie>I managed to put Debian on an Acer C720 after I re-flashed the firmware (which isn't *strictly* necessary). It all works great except for the touchpad... just waiting for that kernel update.
11:23<sney>many things broadcom does make sense to nobody but broadcom
11:23<asklepian>what does it hurt in their eyes?
11:24<asklepian>...that more people would use their products?
11:24<sney>old proprietary business model. everything secret. NO TOUCHING
11:24<cheapie>I don't know if Broadcom thinks somebody will make a clone chip or what.
11:24<SynrG>It doesn't even need to be open source. Just licensed to be redistributable.
11:24<SynrG>So a big fail.
11:24<cheapie>Qualcomm Atheros does *way* better with this.
11:24<asklepian>yeah, I need to migrate hardware bad then
11:25<SynrG>And blame Apple for using Broadcom to begin with. :p
11:25<asklepian>I still love apple... linux still can't compete with the multitouch gesture stuff like bettertouchtool
11:25<sney>it'll come
11:25<asklepian>but it's getting close
11:25<cheapie>You'd think the manufacturers of these things could put in an EEPROM to hold the firmware...
11:25<sney>cheapie: too expensive!
11:26<asklepian>what's EEPROM?
11:26<cheapie>My motherboard has one of those for the onboard (wired) NIC, which otherwise requires firmware.
11:26<cheapie>asklepian: Electronically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory
11:26<asklepian>stores all your firmware then?
11:26<sney>it's a physical chip on the nic that contains the firmware. much more expensive than just making you load it from userspace
11:26<cheapie>asklepian: Basically works sort of like a tiny flash drive, usually used to hold firmware.
11:27<asklepian>how is that 'much more expensive' ?
11:27<asklepian>firmware is tiny
11:27<cheapie>asklepian: Because they have to pay for the chip.
11:27<asklepian>no they don't... the user does
11:27<sney>a couple extra cents per nic for their manufacturing cost adds up
11:27<asklepian>I'd pay an extra $2.50 for that
11:27<sney>and nobody's going to pay more for a broadcom nic when they can just get something better
11:28<asklepian>that should include their profit margin easy
11:28<cheapie>asklepian: Not everybody runs Linux, unfortunately.
