00:07<cheapie>I'm having problems with a hard drive dock thing here... when I connect it over eSATA, the drive appears 256 sectors shorter than over USB. If I format it as the shorter length, it works fine. However, if formatted at the longer length, an error occurs parsing the partition length. I tried with two drives, a 160 GB non-AF and a 500GB AF drive. Output from /var/log/messages, lspci, and lsusb can be found here: http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/9892654/

05:20<bluenemo>I have two network interfaces (tun0 for network 10.11.12.0 and tun1 for network 10.12.14.0) on a 'client'. My routing table on my client says if I want to go to another client in the network 10.12.14.0, use interface 'tun0', as there is a router at 10.11.12.1 that forwards you to network 10.12.14.0. Can I tell my client (debian) somehow that, when sth coming from 'tun1' (as in another client who is only in 10.12.14.0, but has a route to
05:20<bluenemo>10.11.12 via 10.12.14.1) is establishing a connection to the first client to its 10.12.14 address (so this is coming in on tun1) use interface tun1 to respond to that, even if the described way in the routing table of my client of sending traffic into the 10.12.14 network is configured to be going through interface tun0, and traveling over network 10.11.12 first (because there is a router in 10.11.12 to clients in network 10.12.14)? What
05:20<bluenemo> I want to do is use tun0 for 'outgoing traffic', as in traffic I established myself. If I get 'pinged', i want to send the icmp replies over 10.12.14 back, even if my routing table says the way to get there is 10.11.12.1. Is that even possible? Do you get what I'm trying to do?

06:18<Gabriel_7>Hmm, I missed the upper part of the question.
06:18<duclicsic>regardless of the technology involved, what we have is two machines that are both in 2 LANs
06:19-!-jm [~jm@190.192.164.6] has left #debian []
06:19<duclicsic>which means each machine has an IP in each network
06:19<duclicsic>right?
06:19<duclicsic>if machine A sends a packet to machine B on it's IP address in LAN 1, the response should always return over LAN 1
06:20<bluenemo>my laptop is in two vpns, the other client(s) are only in one vpn.
06:20<duclicsic>ok we'll come to the other clients in a sec
06:20<bluenemo>ah i wish I could paint on a whiteboard :/
06:20<duclicsic>am i right so far?
06:20<bluenemo>one sec please, let me describe it again

06:22<Gabriel_7>Sounds complicated.
06:23<duclicsic>bluenemo: there are plenty of sites with collaborative whiteboard-like things
06:23<bluenemo>i have a laptop with tun0 (10.11.12.5) and tun1 (10.12.14.150). I have a client machine (lets name it foo) with tun0 (10.12.14.55). I want foo to be able to ping laptop via the 10.12.14, and laptop to respond via 10.12.14 as well. however if laptop pings foo, this should go via 10.11.12 and then be routed to the 10.12.14 net.
06:23<petn-randall>bluenemo: Important detail missing, what are the netmasks for all interfaces?
06:23<duclicsic>i see
06:24<bluenemo>so the thing is the (current) routing table on the laptop. it thinks it has to go to the 10.12.14 via the 10.12.14 at all times. i only want it to take the 10.12.14 road when its responding to traffic from 10.12.14, otherwise (if the laptop initiates a connection to 10.12.14), I want it to take the 10.11.12
06:24<bluenemo>255.255.255.0
06:24-!-gusnan [~gusnan@s213-100-228-162.cust.tele2.se] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
06:24<duclicsic>right
06:24<duclicsic>why do you want it to do that?
06:25<duclicsic>i mean, it sounds weird, but i suppose you have your reasons
06:25<bluenemo>i have one vpn called the management vpn and one called the admin vpn. the laptop is in the management vpn too. I want it that way because i think its kinda cool :)
06:25<duclicsic>oh
06:25<bluenemo>it would work if the laptop only had one interface too.. but i kinda like the idea
06:25<duclicsic>well you're going to have some difficulty
06:26-!-adrian [~adrian@186.63.9.103] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
06:26<bluenemo>I thought it would be nice to have one network only for management purposes. and then one only administrative stuff is doen.
06:26<duclicsic>you have a directly connected interface to 10.12.14, so it will always want to prefer that route
06:26<bluenemo>done
06:26<bluenemo>yes
06:26<bluenemo>there is no way around that? no way of saying if the connection is already established from 10.12.14, answer via 10.12.14, otherwise (if I initiate the connection myself), use 10.11.12 to access 10.12.14
06:27<duclicsic>yeah i guess iprule is pretty much the best way to sort that, but it sounds like a lot of faff for nothing
06:27<Gabriel_7>bluenemo: I thing you cannot do that with iprule because it is a stateful rule.
06:28<Gabriel_7>You need to use connection tracking + iptables and such.
06:28<bluenemo>ok. yeah its kinda like "I want to know if it works" too, not only a real necessity :)
06:28<duclicsic>hmm actually yeah, iprule can only work on source/dest addresses can't it?
06:28<bluenemo>ah, no fancy conntrack module like iptables has?
06:28<bluenemo>that would be required, yes
06:28-!-shirish [~quassel@117.202.205.120] has joined #debian
06:28<Gabriel_7>"ip rule" can use interface of the packet but not "the interface of another packet this packet is a reply of".
06:29<duclicsic>it's just a bit mental trying to force a packet out of a different interface when it has a perfectly valid route to where you want it to go via some other interface
06:29<Gabriel_7>Why don't you simply connect your management laptop and let the router route all the packet between the two networks ?
06:29<bluenemo>:D
06:30<bluenemo>yeah its kinda mental I guess M)
06:30<bluenemo>well because i liked the idea of only 'management' traffic on the management vpn (monitoring, backups, saltstack) and only humans / admins haning around on the admin vpn
06:30<bluenemo>actually the laptop would be the only client that would hang around in both
06:31<duclicsic>why would you even join both vpns if it's possible to route between them anyway?
06:31-!-roniz [~roniz@87.112.184.35] has joined #debian
06:32<bluenemo>duclicsic, because I thought i'd be cool to be able to reach into the management vpn from the admin vpn (but not the other way around)
06:32<bluenemo>but yeah, its kinda to complicated in any way
06:33<bluenemo>every client will get one vpn client and it'll be just fine. thank you very much for your networking advise and tips guys!! :)

15:09<centrx>gnathan87, Did you perhaps recently upgrade/change your kernel? Can you try booting with the older one?
15:09<centrx>gnathan87, What changed to cause this to happen? Is this a new install?
15:09<centrx>gnathan87, Using a rescue disk (e.g. Debian Live CD) can get you in

15:10<gnathan87>I have to say I'm not entirely sure what caused this... I don't remember doing any updates. There was one older kernel on the list but the same happened.
15:11<gnathan87>Yeah, I can try a rescue disk. I just won't be able to get my hands on one for another day or so :(

18:44<Denise>hello all, I a downloaded and extracted Oracle java JDK 7 on my debian computer, how do i install jdk?
18:45<Nemoder_>!install java
18:45<dpkg>For the Java web browser plugin, install the icedtea-plugin package. For other Java programs, install the default-jre package to get the default or manually select one of openjdk-6-jre or openjdk-7-jre yourself. The old <sun-java6> packages are best avoided as Oracle now forbids Debian providing any security updates to them. See also <java alternatives>.

21:34<martingale>if you are using lightdm i'm not even sure if it looks at .xinitrc
21:35<martingale>lightdm does stuff with .xsession
21:35<chewy>martingale: I see let me try rebooting my test machine and see if it works
21:35<martingale>you only have to mess with .xinitrc if you don't want to use a dm
21:35<chewy>martingale: I thought as much
21:35<martingale>http://paste.debian.net/142613/
21:35<martingale>e.g. my xinitrc
21:36<chewy>martingale: the smaller the system the better, I might ditch LightDM in the future in which case
