01:16<SamB_laptop>IncompleteJerk: er, I meant dd has that limitation yes
01:17<IncompleteJerk>SamB_laptop: yes, i've read a lot.
01:17<SamB_laptop>for cloning, tar or rsync might do the trick
01:17<IncompleteJerk>i decided that i won't clone the whole hard disk but only the partition where the debian system resides. :)
01:18<jm_>then rsync is a better option
01:18-!-knuty [~quassel@] has joined #debian
01:19<IncompleteJerk>can rsync do incremental cloning?

01:19<jm_>yes, you can do it in several runs and it will only send what's new/hasn't been done yet
01:20<IncompleteJerk>nice! thank you! :)
01:21<IncompleteJerk>also, is there any open source or free alternative for deep freeze?
01:21<jm_>no problem
01:21<jm_>what does deep freeze do?
01:22<IncompleteJerk>i need to freeze the system so that any changes made by the students to the system will not be "committed" when the system restarts..
01:22<IncompleteJerk>deep freeze is a software from faronics which basically freezes your computer to a certain state
01:22<IncompleteJerk>you can do whatever you want with the system
01:22<jm_>probably best to use some live system for that ala debian live or grml
01:22-!-vrkalak [] has joined #debian
01:22<IncompleteJerk>but when the system restarts, it goes back again to the state when you freezed it...
01:23<IncompleteJerk>live system?

01:35<jm_>that looks similar to how live systems are odne
01:35<IncompleteJerk>jm_: you mean fsprotect?

06:50<swi>hello. Must be off-topic for this channel, but cant figure out even how to 'ask google'. I wounder how can i provide access i.e. via ssh to multiple virtual machines from outside (internet) with one public ip and with one port. I mean i.e. user connect to some with specified login/pass and get connected to his own VM.

06:52<Infiltrator>swi: You could set the login in /etc/passwd to a special script which connects to a given VM? Not sure how well this would work out, though.
06:53<koollman>swi: first easy way that comes to my mind is using a specific port, then redirect that to the correct internal ip. second way would be to have some kind of command launched that depending on the user, would log to the right vm. (things like bastion-ssh, or ssh proxycommand, or similar ideas)
06:54<swi>ports is ok, but not great i.e. with 200-300 clients
06:54<swi>bastion-ssh.. take a look

06:58<swi>Infiltrator: i gave ssh only as example. actualy there will be rdp
06:59<koollman>I'm not sure how I would solve this 'neatly'. There are commercial products for this kind of thing, but they are not always good and/or cheap
06:59<koollman>rdp is even more problematic for the proxy part. you may use xrdp, but it's rather annoying to setup properly

06:59<koollman>at least port redirection works fine

07:00<koollman>wallix sells that kind of product, too (ssh/rdp 'proxy' stuff. with some logging features. It works, but I would not call it 'good'. not sure about the price)
07:02<swi>hm, we can make somethin like that :)
07:04<gaffa>swi; Why do you need this solution? You could just ssh to host and then from that session ssh to the virtual machines.

09:27<jonaus>SamB_laptop: It does, actually, forget the password. Here's what happenes, stepwise: 1) wifi falls out because the net is unstable, machine tries to reconnect and fails, 2) Password promt with username and password pops up, I click
09:27<jonaus>connect, 3) machone tries to reconnect and fails again, password prompt comes up again, this time with username but NOT password.
09:28-!-riksteri [] has joined #debian

09:30<jonaus>Now, if the net is *not* unstable, this does not happens. If I do the same on a good day, then pw is still remembered.
09:31<jonaus>My hypotheisis is this: nm-applet tries to connect, but fails. Whenit has failed enough times, it assumes that the password is typed wrong (it is not) and erases it so that the user may try again and hopefully hit thre right keys this time.
09:31<jonaus>That would make sens if the wifi you try to use is stable, but at my office it is not.
09:32<jonaus>So, ideally, the simple solution would be to turn this feature off (if my hypothesis is correct, of cource) and just let the computer try to dumbly reconnect forever.
09:33<jonaus>Is it possible to force nm-applet to just try and try and try to connect, no matter what?

20:39<twb>Other than uninstalling it, how do I deal with resolvconf? I have a server that gets its DNS configured by DHCP. I installed dnsmasq for its tftp server, and resolvconf has helpfully eaten my resolv.conf because it assumes I'm using dnsmasq for dns.
20:40-!-PiresFelix [] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
20:41<themill>You probably need to tell dnsmasq not to fiddle with dns. (also, server, dhcp, dns that changes?)
20:42<themill>I have vague memories of doing this once before...
20:42<twb>dnsmasq isn't serving DNS or DHCP, I already fixed that part. Although it was briefly when I first installed it and it auto-started.
20:42<twb>My only problem is resolvconf is setting resolv.conf to
20:43<themill>resolvconf only does what it is told
20:43<twb>So are you saying that I should delete /etc/resolvconf/update.d/dnsmasq ?

20:44<themill>so dnsmasq is either still registering itself with resolvconf or hasn't unregistered itself
20:44<twb>How do I check for that? In theory I could just restart the server and see if resolv.conf is fixed, but users are using it.
