02:42<eightyeight>interesting. i wonder if NFSv3 only uses the user's primary GID. i've not heard of that, but i guess it's possible
02:43<rjsalts>I'm also confused how it can have extended acls when it's nfs 3

07:37<airtower>well, i've locally built and tested a packet with the patches added through quilt
07:38<jm_>jrs: not if you explain what your problem really is
07:38<jrs>jm_: well, i don't know how to ... grub-install says all is well, but the bios won't load grub...
07:38<jm_>jrs: have you tried reinstalling grub? how are you installing it?
07:38<airtower>so as far as i'm aware "quilt import" is all that'd need to be done to add them

07:39-!-elcot [~elcot@106.66.190.232] has joined #debian
07:39<jrs>jm_: i suspect the problem might be due to having a sort of unusual combination of things: an SSD with an encrypted debian install on it.
07:39<airtower>part of what worries me is that the debian maintainer is also the main upstream developer and seems to have (mostly?) abandoned the project
07:40<jm_>jrs: hmm I'm affraid I lack experience for encrypted installs so someone else shall help

07:41<SynrG>airtower: again, we're in a freeze so it's unlikely your patches will make it into this release (but with exceptions still made for release critical things) ... if you care sufficiently you could offer to comaintain
07:41<jrs>jm_: with UEFI, is there anything else you need to do besides "grub-install"?
07:41<SynrG>airtower: if you are not currently a maintainer, you could apply for DM (debian maintainer) status.
07:41<SynrG>airtower: see nm.debian.org
07:41<airtower>SynrG: i'll look into that, thanks
07:41<SynrG>airtower: and even before attaining that status, you could help prepare an upload and try to find a sponsor for it
07:42<SynrG>airtower: making contributions is an excellent way to support your case that you'd be an asset to the project
07:42<jm_>jrs: no, you need to have an EFI partition (proper type) mounted at /boot/efi and that's about it (and the kernel should be booted in EFI mode when installing grub - check the presence of /sys/firmware/efi)

17:20<dpkg>udp is, like, User Datagram Protocol - a thin layer above IP to send individual packets to other computers. Unlike TCP, UDP does not "set up a connection" in advance, and does not make any effort to verify that packets arrive at the other end. In return, this results in faster (although unreliable) transmission.

20:26<sney>Ethan: it is really that simple, and can be more automated using apt to make it have even fewer steps. the catch is that sometimes dependency chains mean you have to backport a bunch of stuff, and some packages can't be backported at all

20:34<sney>you would ask in here, hopefully.
20:34<sney>but the debian packaging flow is pretty strictly defined, and packages need to build predictably with no user input, so most of the time it just works
20:36<SamB_laptop>Ethan: it can be tricky when the package doesn't like the available libraries on the target release

20:36<judd>Backporting package emacs in sid→wheezy/i386: all build-dependencies satisfied using wheezy.
20:37<Ethan>That's what made me think it'd be more difficult. It seems like a lot of packages would depend on newer libraries.

23:04<tooom>I guess removing packages for freeing up space is beyond my skill level. For example I'll remove some giant metapackage, and it says to autoremove orphaned packages. I do so, and it says to autoremove again to remove additional orphaned pacakages. Two more rounds of this and apt-get warns that libc6 shouldn't be removed.
23:05<themill>libc6 wouldn't be marked as automatically installed anyway
