12:54<awal>I have a Dell intel i5 laptop with uefi bios and amd64 compatible and Debian amd64 arch have support for uefi (tried it months ago and it works). I always use i386 images. Will my debian have better performance? will I notice something different ?

13:00<devrikx>UEFI is great for EFI...MBR exists on in first sector of drive which means if it gets corrupted you may have issues. GPT (used in UEFI) keeps boot and partition lists on both the front and back of drive.

13:18<devrikx>The biggest perks are that 1. The partition table is more secure because it exists on both t he first and last sectors of your drive. 2. You can have 100's of partitions instead of just 4 (ofc logical partition can have more partitions on legacy bios).
13:18<devrikx>Which brings us to 3: You can have drives larger than 2TB on GPT/EFI, but not on an MBR drive
13:19<devrikx>EFI was written by Intel -> and its is much less messy than BIOS (mostly because its newer, and we learned from MBR mistakes)

13:21<awal>i heard somewhere that gpt need 1 TB or more
13:21<devrikx>nope, I use GPT on my 256GB SSD
13:22<devrikx>again, gpt stores boot and partition information on the first AND last sectors, so even for drives under 2TB it provides benefit of data security
13:22<devrikx>imagine your first sector is damaged...with GPT you have the last sector as well

13:36<awal>ok, thanks for the links.
13:36<devrikx>ah found original article - better explains and I explains how to do it on gparted: http://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials/730440-using-the-new-guid-partition-table-in-linux-good-bye-ancient-mbr-
13:37<devrikx>it explains** np

13:38<awal>fine. so basically I just have to select gpt instead of msdos
13:38<devrikx>yeah :)
13:38<awal>hm.easy so! :)
13:39<devrikx>lol :)
13:40<awal>first I have to disable uefi for boot with gparted dvd and partition the disk in gpt; then i enable uefi again and install debian amd64 :)

13:41<devrikx>oh no you don't even have to -> just boot via EFI installer and it does it for you
13:42<devrikx>you only have to manually partition extra drives
13:42<devrikx>though you can make it GPT before installing but not necessary
13:42<devrikx>er I'm sorry I'm assuming you'll install Jessie
13:42<devrikx>If you're installing wheezy I really don't know tbh
13:43<devrikx>I believe there is a hack to use gpt on wheezy install
13:43<awal>as I said I tried with wheezy amd64; and it worked but in mdos partitioning table. i dont tried with gpt
13:43<devrikx>ok I see, so wheezy install booted in EFI mode but still partitioned drive as MSDOS ?
13:44-!-octal [~alvarezp@ip-64-134-229-24.public.wayport.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
13:44<awal>anyway, my plan is a debian minimal and upgrade to jessie
13:44<awal>yes
13:44<awal>booted in efi mod and drive msdos yeah
13:45<devrikx>Ok, yeah you're route may work - and be necessary - for wheezy. But if you plan to go to jessie upgrade you don't have to worry at all it creates proper partition table automatically
13:45<devrikx>just boot the installer via EFI that's all
13:46<awal>ok, ok, got you.
13:46<devrikx>:) hope I was able to help after butting in!
13:47<awal>and the installer "look" is nicer in efi mode :)
13:47<devrikx>yea it is :)
13:47<awal>devriks: yes, you was very helpful. thanks!!!
13:47<devrikx>np take care :)
13:48<awal>thanks :) devriks

14:13<guardian>jessie rc1 netinst.iso
14:13<guardian>I tried manually, running through the installer inside vbox
14:14<guardian>and when preseeding, I have "tasksel tasksel/first multiselect" inside preseed.cfg
14:14<guardian>I'm using a laptop
14:14<guardian>in preseed.cfg "d-i base-installer/excludes string task-laptop laptop-detect" doesn't help

14:16<guardian>that doesn't
14:16<pangolinrollin>hmm lemme think
14:17<guardian>well sure I can "tasksel remove laptop" after installation completes
14:17<guardian>I would like to know whether I can disable that upfront while installing
14:18<awal>guardian: yes, I have sen that (no task-laptop referred in the installer) but it depends on the jessie installer you have chosen
14:18<awal>the version of the jessie installer I mean
14:18<guardian>those ones: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/jessie_di_rc1/arm64/iso-cd/debian-jessie-DI-rc1-arm64-netinst.iso and http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/jessie_di_rc1/i386/iso-cd/debian-jessie-DI-rc1-i386-netinst.iso
14:18<guardian>it's RC1
14:19<guardian>awal: are you tellng me it's likely a bug in RC1's installer?
14:19<awal>anyway, when installation finished you can check with "aptitude show task-laptop" and uninstall it if present
14:19<guardian>I know, it's just "tasksel tasksel/first multiselect" or "tasksel tasksel/first multiselect none" means none :) and still laptop gets installed

15:44<pangolinrollin>fx did you see if gtk-theme-switch is installed?
15:47<awal>fx: gnome 3 (shell or classic) is build in gtk3. the old dark theme is included in gome-themes-extras I think so, but is gtk2
15:47<awal>i dont think you can have dark theme with gnome3 unless gnome-thems-extras are ported to gtk3

15:50<awal>fx: anyway, for edit themes and make changes, you need to install the package named 'gnome-tweak-tool'
15:51<fx>hi gtk-theme-switcher is installed. but i think it is not the gtk theme. Got gnome-tweak-tool. But i found no way to change these light grey panels an menu to the usual dark style

15:52<awal>theme you can change the themes included by default. there is no a dark one, but probably you can get one from gnome-look website

15:54<awal>fx: gtk-theme-switch is not a theme, its an app for change theming
15:55<fx>in gnome shell (not classic) there is a black panals and the menus i think are with black background too. in gnome-classic the panels and menus are grey. They dont change with changing gtk-theme.
15:55<fx>I think it is some shell theme thing.
15:56<fx>awal: yes i saw that. it is what gnome-tweat-tool does under theme settings
15:56<awal>fx: again, gnome 314 is built with gtk3 not gtk2. and the standard gnome-theme is adwaita, only grey
15:56<awal>3.14 *
15:57<devrikx>if you want the standard black panel, don't use gnome classic
15:57<awal>there is not a dark gnome theme build with gtk3
15:57<fx>but i like the app menu so much :)
15:58<devrikx>there's quite a few extensions for adding the app menu
15:58<devrikx>extensions.gnome.org
15:58<awal>probably you can get one fron gnome-look website, but it's not supported officialy by the gnome upstream
15:58<devrikx>mmod-panel and taskbar are a couple just to name some

16:00<devrikx>oops mmod-panel doesn't add app menu specifically, I believe taskbar does though
