04:35<bagginsdk>Hello! I would like to ask if testing debian is a good enviroment for developers, because stable edition has too old kernel
04:35<valdyn>bagginsdk: thats not a good reason, because newer kernel are available as backports
04:35<valdyn>bagginsdk: but testing is ok to use
04:36<xormor>bagginsdk, you can just install the newer kernel on your stable debian.
04:36<bagginsdk>valdyn: will i face problems of insane instability
04:36<valdyn>bagginsdk: no

04:37<xormor>bagginsdk, I used to install the newest or almost newest kernels when I used debian, ubuntu or some such other distro. I used apt-get install kernel-[version]

09:13<iobound>hi, i'm getting "Oh no! Something has gone wrong" instead of the gdm3 login screen after a dist-upgrade (sid), any hints?
09:16<towo`>without relevant infos, who should have hints?
09:16<iobound>where should I start looking? I don't even have a /var/log/messages file anymore since the upgrade pulled in systemd
09:17<towo`>journalctl -b

09:18<iobound>yeah, dmesg works but it looked normal
09:18<iobound>ok so journalctl -b has a few worrying lines about dbus-launch, "NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidiactl (permission denied)" and then something about..

09:19<towo`>journalctl -e _COMM=Xorg
09:20<iobound>that journalctl xorg line looks good to me
09:20<iobound>I can ssh in, su to root, do an "export DISPLAY=:0" and start "nvidia-settings", I can see the nvidia-settings app open over the gdm3 "oh no something went wrong"
09:20<iobound>and "glxinfo" shows all the nvidia glx extensions and modes allright
09:20<towo`>you can't use "nvidia-settings" over ssh
09:21<towo`>and glxinfo shows the data from the client
09:21<iobound>i just did, by setting "export DISPLAY=:0". it pops up on top of the gdm3 screen
09:21-!-lostson_ [~lostson@cpe-107-10-110-2.new.res.rr.com] has joined #debian
09:21<towo`>it does not show the data fro, the host
09:21<iobound>i don't thin glxinfo shows the data from the client, because the client is an osx machine without Xquartz running.
09:22<towo`>believe whatever you want
09:22<iobound>glxinfo must show the actual data, beacuse it prints "OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 7300 GT/PCIe/SSE2" which is the card in the machine that errors out in gdm3. i don't have any other machines with a geforce 7300.
09:22<towo`>and since "after d-u" sayes nothing, you on your own
09:23<iobound>i think you are mistaken about how glxinfo can't be run over ssh after setting "expor DISPLAY=:0". but anyways,

18:45<poofiepuffs>I'm using a dual xeon server mobo that uses the AST2400 for IPMI and graphics. This should have made it into Linux 3.16 but in debian I am not sure that is the case. http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~airlied/linux/commit/?id=263432b021cd252570001c10404367e948ac10f0

22:18<somiaj>domovoy: not savay on how to set up a cross compiler, but one method would be set up a armhf vm to compile on. I think this is a starting point for what you need https://wiki.debian.org/CrossToolchains

22:20<domovoy>i'm trying to compile a kernel for a marvell 88F5281 (arm). I'm under debian sid i386. I've seen https://wiki.debian.org/CrossToolchains. Trouble is, i can't install crossbuild-essential-armhf (the wiki says its available on sid, but it seems to be only available on experimental), or either gcc-4.9-arm-linux-gnueabihf (only for amd64). any idea where to go from here?

22:32<somiaj>domovoy: looks like there was a recent change in the naming of the packages. Not figuring it out completely, but they added all this to the build essential-package and it might just require you install crossbuild-essential:arch vs seperate package names.
22:33<domovoy>somiaj: hmmm, i'll a look at that

22:37<somiaj>domovoy: yea I can't tell, when i see teh crossbuild-essetial-armel package it keeps liking back to the build-essential package and not mentioning any of the other meta binary packages built. It could be it wants to be fully intgrated to multiarch so you just need to install build-essential:armel (though not sure if anything else is required because you need cross building tools)
22:39-!-Espresso [~Espresso@113.120.179.166] has joined #debian
22:39<domovoy>trying to install build-essential:armhf leads to some dependency problem on gcc:armhf g++:armhf and make:armhf. Trying to install those just leads to more dependency problems. I guess crossbuild tools in sid is not ready yet
22:40<domovoy>i'm trying crosstool-ng now, but something integrated in the package manager would be great
22:42<domovoy>maybe i should debootstrap a stable or testing
