02:58<dflt_usr>Hey folks - any chance someone has a moment to give me some pointers in moving my /opt partition into my main / partition? I installed Debian with the option of having everything EXCEPT /opt within one partition, putting /opt onto another, larger HDD. I gave myself like 200Gb for /opt, and ~45Gb for the main partition, and used only a few Gb on each. Only about 4Gb of /opt is used, so I'm hoping this migh
02:58<dflt_usr>t be straightforward
02:58<dflt_usr>(apologies for the novel)

04:48<afx237>Linode's distr-upgrade guide says to run "apt-get install apt dpkg aptitude" inbetween the "upgrade" and "dist-upgrade" command. Is this a common thing to do? It doesn't get mentioned elsewhere. Does it make much difference?

04:55<babilen>afx237: It isn't necessary for that upgrade and is likely be a remnant of older procesures. It won't really hurt though. Take a look at https://www.debian.org/releases/jessie/amd64/release-notes/ch-upgrading.en.html for the instructions provided by Debian (wip !!!!)
04:55<afx237>babilen: ok cool, thanks
04:57<babilen>afx237: It essentially just makes sure that you use the newest packaging tools for the upgrade. The idea is that newer versions of those tools will be better in resolving some packaging/dependency related problems during the upgrade

13:54<bluenemo>valdyn, ok, so basically i need to convert the lba 2058156 to bytes to put into dd, and then just write one block of 512b there. (lsblk says its 512)
13:54<bluenemo>wasnt there some fancy smart feature that does all that for me?

13:56<bluenemo>so if i have the error at lba 2058156 with 512b blocks, its a dd if=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=1 seek=2058156 of=/dev/sda skip=2058156 ?

16:22<valdyn>tacos: grub scans all partitions when run run update-grub - it may be that.
16:23<tacos>i dont know whats causing it and i dont know how serious it is
16:23<tacos>arent warnings/errors _supposed_ to cause alarm with the user? :)
16:23<valdyn>tacos: run "update-grub", see if that is causing another message like that. If it is, then theres nothing to worry about.
16:24<tacos>it seems related for sure.. when i run update-grub, it spams it.. along with a bunch of "/proc/devices: No entry for device-mapper found" to my console.
16:25<valdyn>tacos: ok, everything fine then
16:25<valdyn>tacos: because sda2 is not even supposed to have a superblock
16:25<tacos>what about that console spam?
16:26<valdyn>tacos: youre not using the device mapper either, so thats also not a problem
16:26<valdyn>tacos: that spam is an artifact of grub searching all partitions for operating sysystems to add to the boot menu
16:27<tacos>should grub even be looking for a superblock on an "Extended" partition in the first place?.. seems like a bug
16:27<valdyn>tacos: read lines 16-18 in /etc/sysctl.conf
16:27<valdyn>tacos: well, not really a bug
16:27<valdyn>tacos: you *could* put an operating system on that extended partition

18:49<sney>ary: no. dpkg is a bot, and dpkg just messaged you the answer to your question

18:50<ary>sney, can u explain to me?
18:51<ompaul>!u
18:51<dpkg>Damnit Jim! It's YOU. Y-O-U. Not *U*. U is a letter. YOU is a word. See ne1, or wud. Dutch for 'you' (formal singular). See http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20041201
18:51<sney>you set Default-Release to jessie, then add sid to sources.list. that makes it so you can install packages from sid without upgrading your whole system to sid.
18:52<sney>just make sure to remove sid from sources.list once jessie releases
18:53<ary>sney, That I know. Already try that. When i try to install it says that depends on a package "xorg-video-abi-12 and doesn't install.
