06:28<ruslanas>SynrG: did not help...
06:28<ondrej_g>here is a somewhat drastic idea to rebuild the names of packages on the system: install apt-file, populate its database and run apt-file find on all files on your rootfs
06:29<SynrG>ruslanas: "help"? i was thinking it might show errors, that's all
06:29<SynrG>ruslanas: it was a means of getting information about the state of your system

06:30<ondrej_g>ruslanas: be warned that it is likely to take a very long time
06:30<ruslanas>ondrej_g: oh, yes, I understand...
06:30<SynrG>ruslanas: hm. it's likely the package ships with this file but then it is modified locally, so that's a false positive.
06:31<ruslanas>yes, changed ntp server... :)
06:31<SynrG>i was thinking the debsums stored would not match the actual files on the system

06:32<SynrG>that doesn't seem to be the case
06:32<ruslanas>I think, the main problem, is that I did reinstall of all packages
06:33<SynrG>that would explain it, yes
06:33<ruslanas>and reinstall checked, and saw, tht files already exist on system, so did not wrote it to DB
06:33<SynrG>which files? what "it"? which db?
06:33<SynrG>not following
06:34<ruslanas>SynrG: files in packages
06:34<ruslanas>it = apt
06:34<SynrG>the file lists are in /var/lib/dpkg/info/*.list
06:34<ruslanas>apt db
06:34<SynrG>the file md5sums are in /var/lib/dpkg/info/*.md5sums
06:34<SynrG>there is no "apt db" involved. those are plain text files

06:35<ruslanas>Ok, did not knew it...
06:35<SynrG>so when debsums runs, it goes through every file in the lists, and checks md5sums of the files on the system, comparing to the stored md5sums in /var/lib/dpkg/info/
06:35<ruslanas>but, basically these files are apt DB.
06:35<SynrG>if you reinstalled, of course the md5sums and files on the system will match afterwards.
06:35<SynrG>well, dpkg.
06:36<SynrG>which is not apt
06:36<ruslanas>oh, ok, thanks for fixing me and pointing.

06:40<SynrG>or just reinstall the whole system
06:40<SynrG>i'd strongly encourage a complete reinstall, as diversions are only one thing that's likely still broken on your system.

Also when I reboot/shutdown, I am asked for the Super User Password - tried "root" + many other guesses,

17:34<Mukyu>okay I don't know anything about gsettings... can you confirm that the problem is specific to nautilus?
17:35<Mukyu>I would try this
17:35<Mukyu>go into the terminal and run "sudo su"
17:35<Mukyu>I think the root password is not set by default
17:35<beagleburt>Mukyu, yes I see the "Live" icon in Nautilus ~Desktop but I cannot copy it to the GUI-Desktop
17:36<Mukyu>you should be able to run "passwd root" or "passwd live" as root to set up the passwords
17:36<Mukyu>"sudo su" will let you get root privileges in the terminal
17:36<Mukyu>the "live" user password is supposed to be "live" by default, apparently

17:38<Mukyu>anyway once you have root privileges in the terminal, try running the program "nano" and writing a text file to the Desktop directory (remember that ~ won't lead to the same directory when you are root)

23:09<twb>SamB_laptop: um, that happened in sysv in wheezy
23:10<twb>You might be thinking of RH where run levels 2 through 5 are actually different by default; I don't think Debian *ever* did that
23:10<SamB_laptop>lets just say I hadn't had a DM installed since before that on the system concerned
23:10<SamB_laptop>and it's possible that I am confused with RH
23:11<twb>SamB_laptop: I think on systemd, by default it only tries to run *one* dm, whereas IIRC under sysv it was more like the mainstream ones (gdm & kdm) were on by default, and the tiny ones were off by default.

23:28<twb>OK so that is saying that two of the four are enabled and running at different resolutions, so clearly not mirrored
23:29<P-G>It's very confusing.
23:29<twb>If you want to turn on another you can try something like xrandr --output HDMI-1 --left-of DP-1
23:29<twb>Possibly you also need an --auto

23:30<P-G>Yes.
23:31<twb>OK.

23:43<P-G>Twb: So it seems like all the monitors that are on have been named in Xorg.0.log but the ones that aren't working are not named. Only one of them lists a serial number and only two of them list their physical outputs but only one of the ones that lists physical output is working! Very weird.
23:44<twb>P-G: what does xrandr --output HDMI-1 --auto do
23:45<P-G>Nothing. I don't have any displays connected by HDMI.
23:45<P-G>The card that is working has two DVI output and the other card has four DisplayPort.
23:45<twb>Er, you need to connect a monitor before you can turn on the display
23:45<P-G>>.<
23:46<twb>Oh I think I see
23:46<twb>You have one logical port "DP-1".

23:46-!-clonak [~clonak@00010a9e.user.oftc.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]

23:47<P-G>Well, four on another card that isn't showing up.
23:47<twb>Ah so the DP-1 that you pasted is actually from the card that you don't want to use DP on

23:47<P-G>Not quite.
23:48<P-G>Let's see.
23:48<twb>What does lspci -nn | grep VGA say
23:48<twb>It should list both your cards.
23:48<P-G>So two monitors are working fine, they're on the same card. Nothing else connected to that card but it does have a couple other output.
23:48<P-G>They're DVI-I and DVI-D.
23:49<P-G>The other four are connected to DisplayPort on a different card. Two of those monitors are now powering up and displaying my wallpaper but are not being *properly* recognised by the system.
23:49<P-G>They are showing up in the log but it's questionable.
23:49<P-G>They don't show up in xrandr -q.
23:50<twb>Right, that means Xorg can't see them
23:50<twb>So first we need to see if the card is visible to the OS at all
23:50<P-G>It is.
23:50<twb>If we can see it there, we need to look at whether it has a working driver
23:50<P-G>01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation Device [10de:11c0] (rev a1)
