00:13<P-G>Didn't make any difference. Every element on the task bars on the top and bottom of my primary monitor persists when enter Xorg. I had to Alt+F2 to open IRSSI...
00:14<P-G>The time and date elements are covering the ones I need to access the terminal in the top left. Is there a default hot-key for that?
00:15<P-G>twb?
00:15<twb>P-G: I don't know, that sounds separate from "my monitor isn't even detected by xrandr" which is the problem I thought we were solving.
00:15-!-clonak [~clonak@101.98.175.107] has joined #debian
00:15<P-G>Yeah, this is seperate.
00:16<twb>Are you using gnome2, or what
00:16<P-G>3.
00:16<twb>oh right, gnome3 is in wheezy >_>;;
00:16<twb>I dunno about fixing gnome, sorry
00:16<P-G>No worries. Do you at least know of a hotkey for terminal?
00:16<twb>I would try poking in dconf-editor, or right-clicking on the naughty toolbar
00:17<twb>for terminal I always use Alt+F2 then type xterm, or Alt+t bash'
00:17<twb>Because that works in almost all linux DEs
00:17<P-G>Ok, I'll stick with Alt+F2.
00:17<P-G>The taskbars work fine, they just cover eachother up since they're adding up.
00:17<twb>Alt+F1 then terminal ought to find gnome-terminal, in gnome-shell

00:18<P-G>Oh, yeah, that works.
00:18<twb>I dunno how to make e.g. Win+F10 just open the terminal, tho
00:18<P-G>Yeah, that's a problem for another day.
00:18<twb>Probably in gnome's control center somewhere, most likely under the WM
00:18<P-G>I looked when I first installed but it's poorly organised.
00:19<P-G>Anyway, the video is exactly the same.
00:19<P-G>Any ideas?

00:19<twb>You mean the displays are identical?
00:19<P-G>Yeah, no better and no worse.
00:19<twb>If two displays show identical content, they're probably "mirrored"
00:19<P-G>Oh, no.
00:19<twb>xrandr --output X --left-of Y
00:20<P-G>Let's see.
00:20<P-G>The same two work, which is good.
00:20<P-G>The same two don't work, which is bad.
00:20<twb>>confused<
00:20<P-G>And the same two kind of work, which I still consider bad.

00:21-!-libregeekingkid [~quassel@116.75.34.25] has joined #debian
00:22<somiaj>P-G: what are the two video cards in your system?
00:22<P-G>But I do think xorg.conf is related to the problem since messing with the drivers in it made two out of four not working monitors start working.
00:23<P-G>NVS450 and something like a GTX660.
00:23<somiaj>I don't reconize NVS450? Is that one of the quadro cards?
00:23<P-G>Both are supposed to be supported by the drivers I have.
00:23<P-G>Yeah.
00:24<P-G>NVS450 is two chips on one card for a total of four DisplayPort outputs.

00:24<P-G>My GTX is two DVI, one DisplayPort, and one HDMI.

00:25<somiaj>Since I'm unfamilar with the qudaro cards, how old is an NVS450, nvidia likes to take away support of legacy cards.
00:25<P-G>Kind of old but I'm not using their drivers.
00:26<somiaj>so you are trying to do this with nouveau drivers?
00:27<somiaj>are you using the nvidia drivers or nouveau drivers for the gtx660?
00:27<P-G>Yes, I heard they support NVS450.
00:27<P-G>Nouveau.
00:27<P-G>Nvidia drivers did not install so I reinstalled the whole OS to purge them.
00:28<somiaj>P-G: okay, what version of debian are you running?

00:28<somiaj>P-G: /etc/debian_version 'may' help, but lsb_release would be better
00:28<P-G>7.8
00:29<somiaj>really I want to know what version of nouveau you have.
00:29<P-G>No LSB modules are available.
00:29<somiaj>are you using teh 3.2 stock kernel or the backported kernel? Do you know how new of a version of nouveau you need to support both cards (Unforntally I dno't know the quadros that well)
00:30<P-G>Neither of these cards is new.
00:30<P-G>I'm using the stock kernel, I assume.
00:30<P-G>DVD1 image off the site.
00:30<somiaj>yea, but nouveau went a lot of development right around the release of wheezy, you may need a newer version to get thigns to work nicely.

00:31<somiaj>My suggestion (though it may be a shot in the dark) is install the newer kernel and newer nouveau drivers from wheezy-backports

00:31<somiaj>Guess there is none available via backports.
00:32<somiaj>Well since your attempt with xorg.conf didn't work, can you just undo what you did (i.e. delete (after you bakup) the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and anything you may have in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ -- I awnt to see the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from a fresh boot.
00:32<somiaj>I also want to see the output of dmesg from a fresh boot.
00:33<somiaj>you can put the output at paste.debian.net
00:33<P-G>Ok, I'll delete xorg.conf and restart.

00:54<twb>somiaj: I found the problem -- something is giving me mismatching Release & Release.gpg files
00:54<somiaj>though according to http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/CodeNames/, your qudaro should be an NV98 or G98 card, so that seems a bit odd. Also when looking at the log for Xorg, the chipsets nouveau reports it supports is very limited. I'm not sure if you just need a newer nouveau driver to get everything to detect correclty.

00:55<somiaj>twb: ahh nice.
00:55<somiaj>P-G: do you have a copy of the xorg.conf file you were trying to use to force xorg to notice your secondary card?
00:55<twb>And I'm almost 100% sure it's not ME
00:55<P-G>Yes. I have two versions but the second change didn't seem to do anything.
00:56<somiaj>P-G: care to paste what you were using.
00:56<P-G>The NVS450 is running G98.
00:56<P-G>Sure.
00:56<somiaj>P-G: again I'm thinking newer nouveau driers may help (not that your hardware is that new, but the wheezy freeze was at a time of rapid development with nouveau)
00:56<somiaj>P-G: according to your dmesg it is being detected as a NV50 which could be the problem.
00:57<somiaj>P-G: one thing you could do is get a newer kernel, which should contain newer nouveau drivers. That may be enough to get things to detect it correctly.
00:57<P-G>How would I go about that?

01:14<P-G>The current NVS driver may be incorrectly reporting it as NV50?
01:14<somiaj>P-G: I think it might, thing that concerns me is your card is saying the card is being detected as an NV50

01:16<somiaj>well dmesg seems to says it can, I see it correctly identify both cards, just not correctly identify which chipset family it is.

14:27<somiaj>DrZaius: if they are hot plugable and are unpluged/pluged back in they may get assigned another letter. Sometimes this will happen behind the curtin if something is faulty with the cable/hardware and when it is redetected it gets assigned the next letter because the other one is still in use (it wasn't properly unmounted)
14:27<somiaj>DrZaius: if this is happining then you may want to check your hardware

14:28<somiaj>awal: there are basicly three ways in which a wm will generate a menu. Using .desktop files (what most DE's do), using the debian menu system (many of the wms still use this, but most things use .desktop by default), or just do its own thing and you have to generate it on your own.
14:28<Mukyu>I hope to prepare my USB drive for that somehow

18:30<cube>Hi ary. I have 2 laptops. I've installed Linux Mint Debian Edition in the first one and Debian 7.8 in the second one. In LMDE I'm used connecting my Android phone just by choosing the MTP protocol among the phone USB options.
18:32<cube>I'm a newbie :-( and I can't understand your last hint.
18:32<cube>Is it always necessary to mount a smartphone via terminal in Debian 7.8?

18:35<cube>In LMDE my phone is automatically mounted once I choose the MTP protocol. It's as simple as connecting a USB stick.
18:36<phogg>cube: necessary, no
18:36<centrx>It's probably using some kind of 'automount' feature, which you can install in Debian if you wish.
18:37<phogg>cube: The primary difference between "plain" Debian and derivatives such as LMDE is that derivatives handle being "friendly" for you

18:38<phogg>cube: In Debian you may be required to opt-in to something that LMDE does automatically, or by default. You may need to get non-free components, add optional kernel modules, configure an automounter, or other things like that.

18:40<ary>cube, I am having a similar problem with you. I already made my debian mount my phone when I plug it in. but having issue to unmount when unplug.
18:41<phogg>ary: don't you get some kind of hotplug event when that happens? Certainly udev should be notified.
18:41<ary>cube, depend on you phone u will have to add a udev rule at /etc/udev/rules.d and will have to get jmtpfs installed.

18:43<phogg>ary: Well, FYI the kernel will notify udev of any hardware change. It's just a matter of figuring out what your plug/unplug event looks like and writing a udev rule to execute the right thing.
18:44<phogg>Or use some kind of automounter. I'm afraid that my automounter knowledge is very out of date.... I last used one almost 15 years ago, so I probably cannot help there.
18:45<ary>phogg, Thats what im talking about. And how the hell I do that?
