00:57<Guest869>suppose i have just completed an init script called foo. can i just place foo inside /etc/init.d/ and run it instead of having to call lsb's install_initd?
00:58<Nemoder>man update-rc.d
00:59<Rotifer>anyone on use debian to host pxe clients if so how do you get the clients clock offset correct?
01:02<Guest869>gotcha. thanks, Nemoder!
01:02<Guest869>Nemoder: however, if i just wish to test the script, i don't have to call update-rc.d, right?
01:03<Nemoder>if the links aren't there it won't run on startup for that runlevel

01:06<Guest869>all right. i have another question though. does /usr/share/insserv/check-initd-order display init dependencies based upon already running services, or what is present in /etc/init.d/ and /etc/rc?.d/?
01:06<Guest869>so if i just wrote a script and ran update-rc.d, without an actual reboot, will /usr/share/insserv/check-initd-order include my service in the dependency tree?

04:20<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>.
04:21<Shifas>dpkg, I am new to linux.
04:21<dpkg>Shifas: I don't know, could you explain it?
04:21<jm_>dpkg is a bot - and as the above says, don't pick a person to ask
04:21<dpkg>wish i knew, jm_
04:22<Shifas>i don't know how to use this.
04:22<jm_>why did you join?
04:22<Shifas>just for testing.
04:23<jm_>ok then #debian-offtopic is best suited for that
04:23<Shifas>where are u from.
04:24<jm_>please go to #debian-offtopic if all you want to do is chat
04:25<Shifas>ok
04:25<Shifas>then what is the need of this?

12:12<retrospectacus>shirish: where did "allpackages.txt" come from?
12:12<shirish>retrospectacus: got it from http://linux.koolsolutions.com/2008/12/19/counting-number-of-packages-under-debian-linux/ but obviously doesn't work.
12:12<awal>shirish: the most easy way for know that is using synaptic
12:12<shirish>wget tail -n +7 allpackages | cut -d’ ‘ -f1 | cut -d’-‘ -f1 | uniq | wc -l
12:12<shirish>sorry wget http://packages.debian.org/unstable/allpackages?format=txt.gz

12:20<retrospectacus>but it'd also count gnome-mastermind gnome-icon-theme gnome-packagekit gnome as one
12:20<retrospectacus>so I would just take the length of the file, minus 7 and that's how many packages

12:36<somiaj>ites: I didn't see anything telling what your problem is. Are you sure this software you are wanting to install runs on wheezy? Have you tried their support.
12:36<shirish>somiaj: for lenny there was a Blu-Ray .iso image 18 GB, so squeezy and wheezy would probably have more.
12:36<somiaj>shirish: any reason you need to have all 20,000+ packages on disc?
12:37<somiaj>shirish: note it is a bandwidth issue to have downloads that big available. There are ways to make custom iso's if you need.

12:38<somiaj>shirish: https://wiki.debian.org/DebianCustomCD

18:04<pmart>themill: what is the reason? greater exposure of stable to users -- more users find more bugs?
18:05<kfiadikt>Hello, I have a quick question. I tried running Debian testing on my machine and it mostly went smooth aside for one small issue. Every so often Gnome would just simply hang, I won't be able to open the app launcher, switch between windows or even close them, much less resize them. I could only use alt+f4 to close the windows and re-open them and use alt+tab to switch. I don't know where to start digging to find the cause of the issue,
18:05<kfiadikt> so far I tried installing the nvidia Version 340.65 and Version 304.125, both resulting in same issue. I'm currently running a fresh install of Debian Stable with Version 304.125 drivers and so far no problems. Anyone have any ideas where I should start digging?

18:18<themill>pmart: the same is true of jessie though -- there will be a stack of as-yet-undiscovered bugs in jessie as well. Having the jessie number less than the wheezy number doesn't mean that it's the better release yet. It can just mean it's the less tested release.
18:19<themill>You'll also see that we're not really aiming at zero RC bugs, we're aiming at zero RC bugs not marked jessie-ignore or jessie-defer or similar
