00:31<Vikinger>i tried to connect to machineIP:631 and i get FORBIDDEN
00:33<somiaj>Then that is your issue, sounds like the issue is with cups
00:33<somiaj>make sure you use localhost over machineIP, I don't think cups by default listens outside of localhost
00:33<Vikinger>it still shoudnt matter for samba
00:34<Vikinger>i also added in cupsd.conf, Listen
00:34<somiaj>Vikinger: the error you gave me you found says unable to connect to CUPS server and you verified you can't connect to it.

00:34<Vikinger>how do i verify that ?
00:34<somiaj>I'm unsure if samba will actually not run or just give a warning if it cna't do that.
00:35<Vikinger>the port is open and listning
00:35<somiaj>when I asked, can you connect to localhost:631 with a webbrowser and you got 'forbidden', that means you can't connect to it.
00:36<Vikinger>well i just fixed that, i can now connect to it :)
00:36<somiaj>so figure out why you can't connect to it. Forbidden sounds liek bad server configuration.
00:36<Vikinger>but samba still doesnt start
00:37<somiaj>I think only certain groups are allowed to connect to CUPS, make sure the samba user is in the group that is needed to connect to CUPS. I forget the actual group

01:12<Vikinger>how to upgrade 32bits to 64bits, maitaining my /home structure and users
01:14<somiaj>Vikinger: upgrading the arch of the system is best done with a reinstall, keeping /home the same.
01:15<Vikinger>what about users and their passwords ?
01:15<somiaj>you can backup /etc/ and other configs. But changing the arch isn't a simple process because you have to change all your binaries.
01:15<somiaj>you can backup users with /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow and /etc/groups
01:15<Vikinger>i did all of that except for shadow
01:16<somiaj>shadow is where the passwords are actually stored in most cases
01:16<Vikinger>i was just thinking if my samba problem could came from there, since i also copied smbd.conf and copied over
01:17<somiaj>note if the ids from debian get switched around during the install just copying your old passwd and groups file could cause file permission problems. I would double check the ids are the same, or just copy the info relevant to your users.
01:17<Vikinger>i did had to redo all the passwords
01:17<Vikinger>would this explain some problem with samba ?
01:21-!-Hariharan [~harihare@] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:21<somiaj>it could be possible. Maybe you lost/gained or changed the id of the debian users and groups that get created when software is installed
01:22<Vikinger>i think i should do it all over again but instead of copying over passwd and groups just add users and their home to the new system
01:23-!-Savemech [] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
01:23<somiaj>Vikinger: that is usually waht I do, debian reserves users to have uid 1000 and bigger, same with groups. So only copy over the uids and gids 1000+
01:23<somiaj>well as opposed to debian system vs local. Makes identifying which ones to copy easier
01:24-!-anonnumberanon [] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:25<Vikinger>do i really have to copy uids and gids 1000+ ? or is it enouth to just adduser -d

01:29<somiaj>Vikinger: copying all the info about uids and gids also creates the users.
01:29<F4RR3L>I've messed up my debian's grub
01:29<F4RR3L>its booting into a command line now lol
01:29<F4RR3L>I did that by upgrading to Jessie
01:29<somiaj>you could create the users and then just copy over the password info. Though I'd use the ids since if you backed up /home, the file system will want the old uids/gids
01:29<dpkg>To reinstall <GRUB> boot to your Debian install disk/live CD, switch to the other console (Alt-F2), mount your root filesystem (mount -t ext2 /dev/whatever /target ; mount --bind /dev /target/dev ; mount -t proc none /target/proc ; mount -t sysfs none /target/sys), chroot into it (chroot /target), run "mount /boot/efi" on EFI and "update-grub && grub-install /dev/whatever". 01:32<somiaj>F4RR3L: I don't have any expeience with RAID, so I wouldn't be much more help than here is what you should do.
01:32<F4RR3L>is older grub
01:32<Vikinger>somiaj would it be ok to skip the shadow file ? (since i forgot to back it up)
01:32<F4RR3L>does it matter?
01:34<somiaj>Vikinger: shadow is where the passwords are stored. You need those for your user to login.
01:34<somiaj>F4RR3L: idea is the same, but yea grub-legacy may be slightly different to configure
01:34<Vikinger>somiaj i can then just redo the password then
01:35<somiaj>Vikinger: they will need a line in shadow, but yea just give them some blank line, and then redo the passwords.
01:35<somiaj>well some generic not blank line.

01:40<F4RR3L>I have no idea what efi or legacy is
01:40<somiaj>I think that is where your issue is then. I would read up on them
01:41<somiaj>uefi boot is the new method of booting (basicaly a more mordern or replacement to bios)
01:41-!-andrew_m [] has quit []
01:41-!-measter [~Frymaster@] has joined #debian
01:42<somiaj>legacy boot is teh traditional use the mbr (where grub hides) to boot. You need to use either grub-efi (sounds like how you have booted) or grub-pc depending on the method you need to boot. Also to recever in efi mode you need a live image that boots in efi, and visa versa.

01:43<somiaj>sounds like your machine is booted in efi mode, that means during the recovery you need to mount the efi partition at /boot/efi inside your chroot youa re recovering
01:43<somiaj>again I would looke up the difference and make sure you know which method you want to use to boot.
01:44<F4RR3L>I'm pretty confused xD
01:45<somiaj>again look up the difference between efi and legacy boot. This is important when trying to recover grub. (and my guess is there was some issue with this during your upgrade)

01:48-!-Hariharan [~harihare@] has joined #debian
01:48<somiaj>F4RR3L: I told you, first figure out if your machine needs to boot into efi or legacy mode (many modern machines can do both, you have to choose one). Then fix grub to boot in the mode you want witha recovery image.
01:49<F4RR3L>How do I figure that out?
01:49-!-ceny [] has joined #debian
01:49<somiaj>F4RR3L: go read up on what legacy and efi boot is and check what y our hardware supports.
01:50<F4RR3L>My hardware should support both
01:50<F4RR3L>i7 930, I'm pretty sure my motherboard supports uefi
01:50<somiaj>then configure it to use the one you want, and look up how to recover
01:51<somiaj>if you want to use uefi, you need an efi partition (with a gpt partitioh table) and it needs to be mounted at /boot/efi (your original error) to install grub sucessfully

01:51<F4RR3L>I know how this happened
01:51<F4RR3L>I've had my HDD replaced
01:52<F4RR3L>and then I had to format a new one to add it to the raid
01:52<F4RR3L>I've accidently made it a gpt
01:52<F4RR3L>and the sda was DOS/MBR
01:52<somiaj>yea a mirror they should be the same
01:52<somiaj>you can still boot mbr mode with a gpt partition, but you need an mbr partition in there
01:53<F4RR3L>fdisk -l returned GPT errors
01:53<F4RR3L>so I reformatted it to a MBR drive
01:53-!-AntumDeluge [~Jordan@] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
01:53<F4RR3L>both drives are now MBR
01:53<F4RR3L>what do u suppose I should do?
01:53<somiaj>fdisk cannot read gpt devices.
01:53<somiaj>so make sure you configure your system to boot in legacy mode, and make sure you boot from a legacy recovery
01:54<somiaj>debian images can be boot in either legacy or efi mode, be careful which one you boot into (effects recovery)
01:54<F4RR3L>How do I know whether I'm booted in legacy recovery? XD
01:54<F4RR3L>Its a disk booted from the network
01:55<somiaj>I don't have experience with PXE boot, but you can just disable efi boot in your bios that way you are positive it is legacy
01:55<somiaj>if both are configured you may see either a usb boot option or an efi boot option for the same disk

01:58<F4RR3L>file /boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly.
01:58<somiaj>F4RR3L: are you doing this from the recovery system, or from the chroot of your system.
01:59<F4RR3L>did everything !fixmbr showed
01:59<somiaj>well if you are booted in efi mode you can't recover an mbr boot and visa versa (as far as I know with out being very tricky)
02:00<F4RR3L>can I recover it from grub command line?
02:02<somiaj>I always fail when I try to do that.
02:02<somiaj>but yes I think you can manually use the grub command line to tell the system what to boot if grub can see it
02:06<F4RR3L>Any guides from the bot?
02:07<somiaj>not that i know, I'd use google, 'boot from grub command line'

14:35<ixi>what tool can I use from a livecd to mount debian partition and check integrity of files? eg. so that every binary on system is in the state that's known to package manager, and there is no unknown binary files ?
14:37<dpkg>from memory, debsums is a utility that will check a package's files against their checksums. The "-a" argument will instruct it to also check configuration files: "aptitude install debsums; debsums -a -s". Most packages come with md5sums included in the package; if apt's package cache is clean, then generate missing sums with "aptitude reinstall `debsums -l`". Ask me about <md5sums>.

19:15<Funambuli>full hdd
19:15<devil>well, that is your fault
19:15<Funambuli>and i get the cure before the pain
19:15<rylanx>i understood that tmp could fill up if you are running a mailserver or http server. i am just trying an http server for the first time.
19:17<Funambuli>i'm not so advanced as for getting a limit on the hdd without the partitions, so for me is better in that way
