08:21<doofus>oh and the other reason is, I have a small mod in the source I want to do too :). so i pretty much want to compile it either way!

08:22<Brigo>reaper_, it depends on your wifi chip. I think your kernel should support it -if it is the debian kernel- but your system lacks the firmware. It is the usually problem in debian.
08:22<doofus>of course, i'd rather keep it temporary...but it might be several months before 1. dev would consider making my mod official and 2. makes its way into deb repos

08:23<valdyn>doofus: all the dependencies are probably available in experimental
08:24<valdyn>doofus: but maybe you dont want to mess with your desktop system that you may need for something productive
08:24<valdyn>doofus: but if you dont, obviously just add experimental stuf you need
08:24<doofus>yeh I'm guessing they would be ... but i read on /r/debian the other day that adding backports/experimental for things (especially central things) can just start to break things in a domino chain :S

08:25<doofus>so given these i assume are cntral libraries...not a good idea to add experimental versions of them, I'm guessing
08:25<doofus>so, is there some way I can compile and force it to accept 2.42.1 for them?
08:26<doofus>It does say: 'Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you

11:39<somiaj>ary: if you just add a blacklist entry in /etc/modprobe.d/ in say any file you want, create a new one, it should work.
11:40<somiaj>again usually for older radeon hardwar I suggest the radeon driver over the legacy driver. Not sure if it will work better in your situation. This is just my expiernnce and suggestion. 14:58<somiaj>ary: playing software over wine is hit and miss. With older hardware (and sometimes non nvidia hardware) it can be even more a pain. But in terms of drivers there is nthing more than either the radeon drivers or the fglrx-drivers. Since you have to use the legacy drivers the standard 'use newer drivers' won't apply.

15:02<ary>somiaj, some games yes. Other doesn't. The nfsu2 starts normally, but with a looooot of glitches. With fglrx-legacy was functionally amazing. Maybe is a library problema i gess. With fglrx-legacy-driver it will use libgl1-fglrx-legacy-glx, and apears that the firmware-linux-nonfree uses mesa.

15:07<somiaj>ary: then this is just because wine doesn't nescirally give the best support for all games (espically on a radeon hd 3000). You can see if the wine people have any configuration tricks for wine. Check the winehq.org app database for the game you are running.
15:07<somiaj>ary: but you are running in my mind the best drivers you are going to get for the card you have. Also realize some games just get terrible glitches in wine, no matter what card you have.

23:28<Eryn_1983_FL>hey peeps
23:28<Eryn_1983_FL>i did a sudo smartctl --test=long /dev/sdb
23:28<Eryn_1983_FL>an hour ago how do i see the results of it ?
23:29<somiaj>man smartctl, I forget if it sends it to a log file or stdout
23:29<somiaj>I thought stdout, so I would just wait until the test is done and it should give the report
23:30<jaggz>this "Display - KDE Control Module" .. it's different than in older versions of KDE... I'm on a Debian KDE system using Debian Testing...

23:30<jaggz>when I enable one of my displays (tv via HDMI), it doesn't trigger the "Apply" button to be black.. stayed greyed out
23:32<roberth1990>jaggz: #debian-next
23:32<somiaj>bugs are on the bts, bugs.debian.net
23:32<somiaj>I think there is a #debian-kde too.
23:32<jaggz>oh.. i'm in the wrong channel oops..
23:32<somiaj>jaggz: one things you should check out when dealing with desktop bugs, is try a new user with no configs, sometimes old stuff in users $HOME can mess up desktop applications
23:32<jaggz>thanks roberth1990
23:32<jaggz>somiaj, ahh.. interesting

23:35<jaggz>how's logging out and back in work? does it restart X or can multiple user sessions of X be running?
23:35<jaggz>never delved into that
23:36<jaggz>like right now i made the new account and figured I have to log out, closing down my browsers
23:36<jaggz>terminals... etc.
23:36<somiaj>jaggz: depends, usually loggin out will stop your session and reload the display manager. I'm unsure if xorg is complete restarted, or the display manager just takes back over.
23:36<jaggz>k.. thanks
23:36<jaggz>bb probably then :)
23:36<somiaj>jaggz: kde may have a 'switch to another user' then it will
23:36<somiaj>create a second xserver you can log into
23:36<jaggz>ahh
23:36<jaggz>intressin
23:37<somiaj>you can also have startx create a second server on diplay 1.0 instead of 0.0
