01:30<Henry151>Hello ladies and gentlemen!
01:30<Henry151>I'm here to plead for NSS 3.16!
01:31<Henry151>We all love linux and we all watch movies (at least occasionally) and those [expletives] who are running Ubuntu get to watch netflix, just because they upgraded NSS. Why can't we do it too?
01:32<roberth1990>Henry151: ask in #debian-backports
01:32<Henry151>Right away sir, thank you much!
01:33<jm_>are you talking about libnss3?
01:34<Henry151>yes
01:34<jm_>jessie has 3.17
01:34<Henry151>indeed
01:34<Henry151>I want it in wheezy, I'll tell you why
01:34<Henry151>:D
01:35<Henry151>I use Kali as my primary OS on my main laptop, and Kali generally follows Wheezy's lead as far as upgrading things
01:35<jm_>well then kali people should provide you with it, no?
01:35<Henry151>The folks who administer Kali linux do not care at all about Netflix, because they don't want people using Kali as a primary OS, only as a pentesting tool
01:36<Henry151>so after bugging them about it for a solid week (including submitting a bug report requesting an upgrade the way they told me to) I have given up
01:36<Henry151>they won't upgrade it until wheezy does
01:38<Henry151>i've been using Kali as my day-to-day OS for 3 years, and I love it, and running ubuntu in a virtual machine doesn't work for watching netflix because my laptop is too old and tired

03:07<twb>Does *anyone* understand gvfs?
03:08<twb>From thunar I go to sftp://inmates/p and that works because I installed gvfs-backends. Double-clicking on files doesn't work (thunar executes the app, but doesn't pass ANY argument to it). Copying the files to a local folder (in thunar), then opening them, DOES work.
03:09<twb>Installing gvfs-fuse and giving the user write access to /dev/fuse worked on $coworker's laptop (*after* rebooting), but I can't reproduce that on my lab machines. I can see /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-fuse-daemon isn't running in the lab, but I have no idea what starts it.
03:10<twb>Nothing interesting appears in .xsession-errors, syslog nor dmesg.
03:10<twb>Now, admittedly, the user didn't have write access to /dev/fuse when they logged in, because udev is being terrible at me. Lemme try a bigger hammer...

04:23<twb>Aha! Found the problem. Whereas I can let them burn CDs by changing /dev/cdrom to 666 (instead of adding them to the cdrom group), fuse doesn't work because /bin/fusermount is root:fuse 750
04:23<twb>Just changing the permissions on /dev/fuse wasn't enough
04:24<twb>(I don't want to add LDAP users to local groups because then I have to make sure the gids of local groups never ever change.)
04:25<twb>And fuse group is >100, so it's not even guaranteed by debian to be the same even for all Debian systems.

04:27<twb>Why doesn't fuse.postinst use dpkg-statoverride to change /bin/fusermount's permissions?

04:31<jm_>right
04:31<twb>So basically, people used to just run their entire GUI as root so they could use fuse. That made the fuse maintainer sad, so he waggled it to be setuid, and *didn't* use statoverride, so that you (the sysadmin) could override the override
04:32<twb>Because while dpkg-divert differs between "I'm the crazy sysadmin" and "I'm the package maintainer", dpkg-statoverride doesn't

06:32<Creak>I have a problem receiving a lot of mails from cron with the subject "root cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly" and the message "/bin/sh: root: command not found". I've read the man and I understand that system cron file can specify a user and apparently everything's fine in /etc/crontab (I neveer touched it actually).

06:43<Creak>I only have two files: www-data and mesamatrix, but I ran "sudo crontab -r" previously (seems to be a solution for my problem, from google)
06:44<jm_>yeah if root had such a cron job configured that would help
06:45<Creak>what could have create a file in the spool? "crontab -e" as root?
06:45<jm_>yup
06:45<Creak>ok, I might have done that unintensionnaly
06:45<jm_>it's ok to do it, just use the right syntax (one field less there)
06:47<Creak>I assume that if I do nothing, these system crons are still executed (just in a different way)
06:47<jm_>yeah, the only difference is the user field
06:47<Creak>ok
06:48<Creak>why debian has chosen to do that?
06:48<jm_>do what?
06:48<Creak>having two configuration syntax
06:49<Creak>why not simply generate the crontab for the root instead of having a specific system config?
06:49<Creak>(candid question)
06:50<jm_>flexibility?
06:50<jm_>because this way a package can add a file /etc/cron.d that can be run as non-root user
06:52<valdyn>probably not debian but someone in the 70ies who added multi-user capabilities to cron
06:53<jm_>I checked on RHEL and it doesn't mention it
06:54<valdyn>jm_: did you check their crontab files?
06:54<jm_>actually it does, it's just not explained as good ad in the debian man page :)

07:09<Creak>jm_: yes, I can run "crontab -e" for other users, but for the root, if I do that, it will generate a bad crontab in the cron spool, unless I edit the /etc/cron* and remove the user field

Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. 14:32<birch>how do i diagnose a memory leak? my ram usage is way higher than what shows up as ram per process running.
14:32<birch>is there a log file for this or do i just do a soft restart?
14:32<valdyn>birch: you learn to read the data properly ;)
14:32<valdyn>!free ram
14:32<dpkg>Unlike information, your computer's memory does *not* want to be free. Free RAM is wasted RAM! Linux tries to use free physical memory for caching files from disk which speeds up disk access considerably. Linux releases RAM from these caches if programs need it. If you want to know how much physical memory the free(1) tool says you have left for program use, it's 'free' + 'buffers' + 'cache'. Also ask me about <swapwake>.
14:33<birch>valdyn, i'm having performance problems because of it
14:33<birch>this is an anomoly, not normal usage.

17:53<SynrG>for me
17:54<somiaj>you can also tel curl to use a specific nameserver if needed
17:54<SynrG>nameserver? that can hardly be relevant here ...
17:55<nameserverbob>nah it sounds cool i can see use cases...but yeh still can't curl their ipv6
17:55<SynrG>sounds like your network is configured to not route ipv6 addresses

17:55<nameserverbob>good for sec, but.....interesting

17:57-!-ryouma [~user@ip68-226-110-213.ph.ph.cox.net] has joined #debian
17:57<nameserverbob>def blocked then?
17:58<SynrG>no
17:58<SynrG>my test was on a host with a web server running on port 80
17:58<SynrG>[::1] is the localhost address
17:58<nameserverbob>i kno
17:58<SynrG>therefore, curl [::1] works, fetching my home page on port 80
17:59<nameserverbob>so thus i'm thinking, that shows that mine is not configured to route ipv6, like you said..
17:59<SynrG>if you have no web server listening on ipv6 port 80, on the host where you ran curl, it would give you exactly the message you got
17:59<nameserverbob>oh

18:00<nameserverbob>RESOLVE NAME to ipv6. that doesn't sound like what you use to directly *access* an ipv6 addy.

18:04<SynrG>as it does for me
18:04<SynrG>and ping6 just reports "connect: Network is unreachable"

22:21<centrx>Aidan_160, If you want the server to start at boot, put it in /etc/init.d and use update-rc.d
22:22<Aidan_160>so place the crontab in that file location and put update-rc.d where? sorry im very new to command line
22:23<Aidan_160>@reboot /home/ts3srv/teamspeak3-server_linux-amd64/ts3server_startscript.sh start

22:24<gnumoksha>put @reboot... in /etc/crontab?
22:24<centrx>yeah, you might have to follow the format of the top lines in similar files, which you can look at and the man page
22:24<centrx>Aidan_160, an easier solution might be to use the settings tools with your desktop environment, for setting up things to start on boot
