01:20<somiaj>Aidan_160: what is this script and where did you get it? Does it have LSB headers? are you using wheezy and sysvinit?
01:23<Aidan_160>i pm's you
01:23<Aidan_160>deb 7
01:24-!-RdrOfThe1 [~RdrOfTheS@] has joined #debian

01:26-!-thunderrd [~thunderrd@] has joined #debian
01:26<somiaj>Aidan_160: please don't message me, keep your comments in the channel
01:27<somiaj>Aidan_160: okay, now that I know it is a valid LSB script run 'update-rc.d scriptname defaults' after you have coppied it to /etc/init.d
01:27<Aidan_160>so what does that do
01:28<somiaj>it uses the LSB headers to decide in what position to put it in the boot order.
01:28<somiaj>and then creates all the links so the script is run at startup.
01:28<Aidan_160>i get this
01:28<Aidan_160>insserv: script ts3server is not an executable regular file, skipped!
01:29<somiaj>i.e. /etc/init.d is only the place all the scripts are located. The are actually run from the run leves, 2 in your case, /etc/rc2.d/ -- that command manages those links for you, use it over manually making them.
01:29<somiaj>Aidan_160: chmod +x /etc/init.d/ts3server, then repeate
01:29-!-ponyrider [] has joined #debian
01:29-!-dserban [] has joined #debian
01:30<Aidan_160>i get the same thing
01:30-!-pied5 [] has left #debian []
01:31<somiaj>Aidan_160: then you didn't make the file executable. You should also edit the script to tell it what user to run the server ass.
01:31<somiaj>Aidan_160: ls -l /etc/init.d/ts3server (I just want the line that gives me the permissions of that file)
01:31<Aidan_160>i edited it and how to i mkae it executable im use to a gui, im a nood at this
01:32<somiaj>Aidan_160: I told you, 'chmod +x /etc/init.d/t3server' that makes it exectuable
01:32-!-ki_2 [] has joined #debian
01:33<somiaj>Aidan_160: again keep it in the channel, and you didn't run the chmod command I told you, or you got an error from that command and didn't tell me
01:33<Aidan_160>i no i ran it and it gave me nothing
01:34-!-jhw [] has quit [Quit: leaving]
01:34<jm_>it should be chmod +x /etc/init.d/ts3server
01:34<somiaj>that should have given him no such file, but yes, I misstyped it. :/
01:35<Aidan_160>haha np i did that and it game me
01:35<Aidan_160>update-rc.d: using dependency based boot sequencing
01:35<somiaj>that is good, it is just saying it is doing its job
01:35<Aidan_160>oh ok
01:35<Aidan_160>so should i try a reboot now
01:35<somiaj>It should work, but yes test it when you feel you are ready to reboot.
01:37<Aidan_160>so anytime i oput a autorun script in ther ei shoudl make it a executable and do the update-rc.d default command

01:39<Aidan_160>it failed to autostart i had to go in and manually execute the script
01:39<somiaj>Aidan_160: depends onw hat you mean by autorun, if you mean whenever you want to manage an LSB init.d script, ues you use update-rc.d to manage those
01:39<somiaj>if you mean you want to run an application when you log into your desktop, tell your desktop (maybe gnome) to run a startup application
01:40<Aidan_160>im using a server
01:40<Aidan_160>no gui
01:40-!-mlundblad [] has joined #debian
01:40<Aidan_160>i wan tit to run on the server startup
01:41<somiaj>then use, update-rc.d is the debian tool to manage your startup scripts (again they have to have LSB headers, there are other types of start up scripts out there)
01:41<somiaj>the .service systemd ones won't work.
01:41<Aidan_160>what is a LSB script
01:41<Aidan_160>ill google it
01:42-!-wavekidsjp [] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:42<somiaj>Aidan_160: it is the type of script you were given, mostly defined by the headers (it is the larget string of comments at the top, other wise it is just an sh (shell) script)

01:54<somiaj>no b?
01:54<Aidan_160>but when i installed proftp it automatically put itself in there why not teamspeak
01:54<Aidan_160>meant just no
01:55<somiaj>Aidan_160: because debian doesn't provide ts3 packages, and the way the company you let you get ts3 didn't make a debian package for it to do all this for you, so you have to do this.
01:55<somiaj>Aidan_160: okay give me the full output of 'update-rc.d ts3server defaults'

02:05<soupy>somiaj: You're a god among men, got it.
02:06<Aidan_160>okay i added 2 and 4 to thr default stop and 0 1 6 to default stop is that right

08:45<somiaj>ThomasKeller: /etc/pm/sleep.d is for you to put in special scripts, /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/ are package supplied scripts.
08:46<somiaj>ThomasKeller: I have no scripts in /etc/pm/sleep.d, as for why you have a lot of touch (0 byte) files there is a mystery to me unless something put them there. But yes you dno't need them (though you should backup just in case, but that is just me being paranoid)

15:15<somiaj>aidan160: actually I shoudln't say all, I should say all normal debian installers. The debian live images have a special 'live installer' which doesn't allow you to not install the gui in the live system (i.e. the live installer makes a clone of the live image)

15:17<somiaj>aidan160: you can either say no to tasksel (that is the thing that asks about additional software), or just choose non-gui tasks. i.e. the tasks are just set up to install a default set of packages from the net (hence net install) after the minimum base system is installed.
15:17<aidan160>okay thank you
15:18<somiaj>correct, I think net-install is a confusing name. Because on the image is a functional minimial debian system. It doens't contain much, but it is functional
15:18<somiaj>also this is good to know if you need non-free firmware or something tricky to get the system on the net. You can still use the install image to install a minimial system. Then configure it to get on the network, then install the rest of the packages you want.

17:41<centrx>astronaut, Debian is stable. The stable release does not get new features. The new stable release will be released in two weeks, it is frozen.
17:42<centrx>astronaut, Both of these packages will undoubtedly get new packages in jessie-backports
17:42<astronaut>ok. i am just suggesting. i have backported them easily already
17:43<centrx>It is a reasonable idea, but there are New Good Things in all kinds of software across the entire system

17:44<Hydroxide>astronaut: if you want the suggestion to be acted upon, the best thing to do is wait until Jessie releases, make sure they get into jessie-backports for use by anyone running jessie, and to the extent possible, propose minimal functionality fixes (not new major versions) for jessie-proposed-updates to find their way into 8.1
17:45<Hydroxide>astronaut: this can ensure all jessie users have a solution available to them quite soon after jessie releases, and in the case of severe breakage like "youtube-dl doesn't work at all", can get a fix into the archive mere months later
17:46<Hydroxide>nobody is saying that jessie users need to be screwed and will have to wait until the following major Debian release. that would indeed be bad, but we have better answers than that. :)

22:47<MichaelPaoli>Debian Wheezy 7.8 x86_64/amd64 ... so, USB drive got the power kicked out from under it (oops) - I'm trying to unjam and umount the few remaining filesystems that got "stuck" - notably have one ext3 on LVM, and some zfs under fuse that are "stuck" ... suggestions?

22:50<somiaj>MichaelPaoli: if the file system didnt' sync before the 'issue' you are going to have trouble, it might be stuck trying to sync the file system. dmesg give you any clue why it isn't unmounting.
22:50<somiaj>part of it being an LVM you may have to do some data recovery depending on how much corruption happened becuase you didn't cleanly umount it
22:51<MichaelPaoli>somiaj I think dmesg likely complained of I/O issues when it went off-line, but the activity was relatively light and should be easy to recover from - only one filesystem was quite active, and that was a simple data copy that's reproducible - the rest were quiescent.

22:53<somiaj>MichaelPaoli: if the file system was out of sync at the time of the sever it could be a lot of corruption (again if it wasnt activally being used could be it was synced). But I'm unsure what to do. I would almost sugest a reboot to get a fresh software stack and then worry about recovery afterwards.
22:53<somiaj>I had a dog's tail hit a usb external drive off my coffetable once, I think the jaring of it hitting the ground was the problem, but lost most data and the file system was hosed.
22:53<MichaelPaoli>somiaj I/O error, dev ... rejecting I/O to offline device ... Buffer I/O error on device ... mostly stuff of that nature.

22:55<MichaelPaoli>somiaj Yep, ... could always reboot :-) ... that would do it ... but I'm kind'a interested in fixing it without reboot - if feasible ... sometimes reboot isn't an option. In the cases I've had this issue before, have been able to untangle it, but the added variable in this case is ZFS under fuse also on that USB.
22:55<somiaj>MichaelPaoli: I can understand io errors because the drive disappeared and it may not be able to recover from that since it is trying to write to a device that doesn't exist. Do you get these errors when you plug the drive back in, if so y ou may have damaged your hardaware.
22:55<MichaelPaoli>somiaj ... it is, however, a completely separate pool for that device ... and could export *all* of ZFS, unload/reload fuse ... but the zpool export - even witih -f option, also hangs.
22:56<somiaj>MichaelPaoli: I'm unsure if there is a way to force unmount a file system that is waiting to sync/clean up on a device that doesn't exist. Might be possible, but I don't know of a way. It could be the kernel is stcuk waiting from response from the device and nothign can be done.

22:56<somiaj>(it could be there is a way to get around this and foce it to unmount, but I'm not familar with doing such thigns)

22:57<MichaelPaoli>It's just USB drive - lost power, and power restoerd ... when it came back it came back as different sd device, ... I was able to clear that all out and get it back as the original device, but still couldn't quite free up one stuck filesystem, nor get the zpool to export or otherwise behave fully as it ought to.
22:57-!-h [] has joined #debian
22:58<MichaelPaoli>somiaj Thanks. Yeah, I've been quite successful before, ... mix of kill -9, umount -f, dmsetup remove, and some rm, and eventually cleared it all out and was able to bring all back fine - but that was without ZFS under fuse on the device that lost I/O connectivity.
22:58<somiaj>MichaelPaoli: well if you want to do more research go for it. But my guess is in order to unmount the old file system on the now dead device the kernel needs to talk to the device, but it can't (the device no longer exists on that node) so it gets IO errors. I'm unsure what one could do to force the kernel to just drop info about this 'dead device' or not.
22:59<MichaelPaoli>somiaj Okay, thanks, I'll poke around some more, and search/research some more ... I'm suspecting it may be the ZFS/fuse layer that's particularly "jammed", as I was successful before, without that added complication.

23:13<MichaelPaoli>somiaj Ah, ... I think I about got it! ... kill -9 to the zfs fuse PID (kill -15 wouldn't do it), remove its PID file, then service zfs-fuse start ... I think I'm about 85 to 95% of the way there now - got the stuck, unstuck, and I think only one filesystem failed to remount (and that's probably a minor booboo on my mount specification for it).
23:14<MichaelPaoli>somiaj I was remembering once upon a time, with ZFS fuse, it suddenly stopped working - the zfs fuse PID had died - couldn't just restart it, but had to remove its PID file first, then restart it and all was fine again - seems solution in scenario of disconnected drive is relatively similar.
