04:05<twb>You have two identical cards, and it default to playing on HDMI instead of to your onboard speakers / headphone socket
04:05<twb>So the three or four documented ways to fix this all suck
04:06<twb>Although - your thing says "unable to open" which I don't get
04:06<DarkUranium>so I gathered yesterday, when I asked this
04:06<jm_>but wouldn't that mean "no sound" instead of unable to open slave?
04:06<twb>jm_: yeah
04:06<twb>So he has more problems than me
04:06<twb>http://sprunge.us/ggZI?ini is my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
04:06<DarkUranium>note that -D 'default:PCH' works .... mostly.
04:06<jm_>maybe try to compare strace output for both commands (which device files it tries to open)
04:07-!-Volley [~worf@hexen.cgv.tu-graz.ac.at] has joined #debian
04:07<DarkUranium>it usually works
04:07<DarkUranium>but sometimes, I can only play 1 sound (say, with aplay) --- the next invokation stops working
04:07<twb>If you don't care about sound on the HDMI, try that and see how much it fixes
04:07<twb>AIUI whether you can play >1 thing at a time without pulseaudio, depends on whether dmix is working
04:08<DarkUranium>no
04:08<twb>dmix is the software mixer built into alsa
04:08<DarkUranium>I mean, only one thing breaks
04:08<DarkUranium>play 1 sound, wait for it to stop playing

04:08<twb>I haven't seen that.
04:08<DarkUranium>(or rather, some subtle audio output, but not related to audio)
04:08<DarkUranium>not related to the sound file*
04:08<DarkUranium>twb, what do I need to restart now, for the changes to take effect?
04:08<DarkUranium>and I'd like to have HDMI output, too, but it's not critical
04:08<twb>I know restarting works.
04:09<twb>I don't know about "rmmod thingy"
04:09<twb>This will basically jsut swap them, so you can still manually output to HDMI audio
04:09<twb>using --card=1 or whatever option the program takes
04:09<DarkUranium>anyways, lemme try then
04:09<DarkUranium>brb, reboot
04:09<twb>If you want stuff to "just work" then we get into pulseaudio and GUI territory that I don't know about
04:10<jm_>dmix works if the software is using default device, if something uses hw:foo it won't work AFAIK
04:10<twb>jm_: ah because hw: is an exclusive open?

04:11<DarkUranium>twb, yay, it works; thanks!
04:11<DarkUranium>twb, so I take it there's no way to have output to both at the same time? (NOT involving PulseAudio --- I'm not touching that with an 11ft pole)
04:12<twb>DarkUranium: I dunno
04:12<twb>I flat out didn't care about HDMI
04:12<twb>I was a bit annoyed it was considered a separate channel -- I assumed it'd work like the headphone jack and implicitly turn off the onboard output
04:12<twb>"jack sensing", they call that
04:13<DarkUranium>I actually prefer no jack sensing
04:13<DarkUranium>in my old laptop, a certain patch in Squeeze changed that, to add support for jack sensing ... I hated that xD
04:13<DarkUranium>(before that, output was to both headphones --- whether they were plugged in or not --- *and* speakers)
04:13<twb>re smart -- https://bugs.debian.org/782992
04:14<twb>DarkUranium: then switch to OSS4 which doesn't support most jack sensing? ;-)
04:14<DarkUranium>(I had a setup where my "master" volume was fixed to 100%, and the usual volume controls would just deal with speaker output, instead)

04:17<DarkUranium>twb, toggling mute on with the keyboard makes the OS keep toggling it (as if I was holding the key, and it's on repeat)
04:17<DarkUranium>toggling it off makes it normal again (playing sound)

14:07<DarkUranium>tremon, the second one is the relevant portion of fftw3.h where the error happens
14:07<SamB_laptop>so wouldn't it work better if debbugs would just support providing a link to copy the URL from?
14:07<DarkUranium>tremon, looks like GCC doesn't recognize the __attribute__((mode(TC)))

14:11<SamB_laptop>somiaj: yeah, I wasn't sure if it was using just those rewrite rules in the apache config, or if it involved one such rule that passed all such things on to some kind of redirect script ... though I guess that might be tricky to pull off without also rewriting the long forms ...
14:11<tremon>not if line 17 got preprocessed out
14:11<DarkUranium>tremon, one note: this is the official fftw3.h that was packaged with libfftw3-dev
14:12<DarkUranium>tremon, well, depends on how you look at it.
14:12<DarkUranium>if I do something like:
14:12<somiaj>SamB_laptop: this is all part of the <what ever server> config using ModRewrite
14:12<DarkUranium>#define ADD(x,y) ((x) - (yy)) /* supposed to add x and y; note the error: yy instead of y */
14:12<DarkUranium>tremon, and then `ADD(5, 6)`, I'll get an error about yy not being declared
14:13<SamB_laptop>somiaj: anyway a "shortlink" link to copy the URL from on each bugpage would be more than enough for me ...
14:13<DarkUranium>tremon, so while the compiler will report the latter line, the actual problem (program source code-wise) is in the #define
14:13<DarkUranium>tremon, hence, problem being line 17.
14:13<tremon>DarkUranium: line 17 defines FFTW_DEFINE_COMPLEX, which isn't used in line 19 fafaics
14:14<DarkUranium>tremon, how can you tell?
14:14<somiaj>SamB_laptop: yea I agree that it is annoying that the redirect rewrites the url so it makes copying/pasting the short link harder. As I said file a bug report or send a wish list to the matainers of bugs.debian.org

14:14<DarkUranium>tremon, I'm compiling this in C99 mode, and I'm including <complex.h> before fftw3.h (which is a *DOCUMENTED* way of saying that I want FFTW's complex numbers to be `{float, double, long double} complex`)
14:16<tremon>DarkUranium: I'm not saying it's not a bug, I'm just saying that the problem may not be in line 17
14:16<DarkUranium>tremon, anyways, look at the first paste, it clearly says `mode(TC)` is the problem: "/usr/include/fftw3.h:373:1: error: mode 'TC' applied to inappropriate type"
14:16<DarkUranium>tremon, see above ^
14:16<SamB_laptop>DarkUranium: hmm, that doesn't sound like a failure to recognize mode(TC) really

17:23<finetundra>hello folks, what version of WINE is included in Jessie?

17:24<dpkg>The wine-unstable packages in Debian are very out of date and possibly not what you want. For unofficial, newer versions of these packages for jessie/sid, see http://dev.carbon-project.org/debian/wine-unstable/ . These packages can be backported to wheezy with a little work, ask me about <ssb>. Alternatively, the commercial <cxoffice> offers a recent wine with support.

17:53<dpkg>Debian does not use a specific runlevel for graphical display managers by default. Just remove the DM package(s) with "aptitude remove xdm kdm wdm login.app gdm gdm3 pdm slim". "echo false >/etc/X11/default-display-manager" will also disable the DM, or just hit ctrl-alt-fN to get to a console. nodm is the name of a minimal/automatic display manager (http://www.enricozini.org/sw/nodm/).
17:53<somiaj>saeia: I would boot into a rescue mode, then do that command, 'echo false >/etc/X11/default-display-manager'
17:53<somiaj>that will make it not load the display manager and boot you directaly intoa console. IOf that doesn't work then your issue is not with xorg/gnome but with something else
