01:54<kun>using jessie, did chkconfig and systemctl disable gdm3 but gnome still starts on boot, what am i missing?
01:55<dpkg>Debian does not use a specific runlevel for graphical display managers by default. Just remove the DM package(s) with "aptitude remove xdm kdm wdm gdm gdm3 pdm slim". "echo false >/etc/X11/default-display-manager" will also disable the DM, or just hit ctrl-alt-fN to get to a console. nodm is the name of a minimal/automatic display manager (
01:55-!-marcello1 [] has joined #debian
01:55<somiaj>I would use that echo false >/etc/X11/default-display-manager the init scripts for dm's should check that file and only run if they are the default.
01:55-!-brentaarnold [~brentaarn@] has joined #debian
01:56<kun>my goal is to boot in console and ssh in with X11 forwarding. at times i may wish to systemctl start gdm3 locally
01:56<somiaj>not sure why disabling the service didn't work. It should.

01:56<somiaj>kun: well if you are running from a terminal, why not just use startx?
01:56<jm_>does systemctl status confirm it's disabled?
01:56-!-shane is now known as Guest2902
01:57<twb>Does systemctl have a "why" command like aptitude?
01:57<kun>somiaj: startx is fine with me
01:57<twb>like ->> "I started gdm3 because it was needed by colord" or something
01:57<kun>jm_: status just says running / stopped

01:58<kun>jm_: you are correct, it says service enabled. i will disable again\

02:00<kun>where should i paste the output of systemctl disable gdm3 ?
02:00<jm_>kun: maybe you need to say gdm3.service or somesuch, try list-units or perhaps list-dependencies
02:00<jm_>!tell kun -about paste
02:00<twb>kun: are you disabling it as root?
02:01<twb>I notice you disabled gdm3 but it said gdm.service -- no 3
02:01<kun>yup, and systemctl disable gdm.service (pulled from status) looks promising
02:01<twb>(I'm just guessing randomly here; I have NFI what I'm doing.)
02:01<jm_>yeah I think I ran into that too
02:02<kun>its in vmware workstation atm. once it reboots and it works i can reboot comp straight into it :)
02:03<kun>zomg it still boot into gnome lol
02:05<kun>main pid is gdm3
02:05-!-fhenning09 [] has joined #debian
02:05<jm_>so perhaps try list-dependencies
02:05<kun>err, the other way. how i find what depends on gdm3?
02:05<jm_>that lists a tree, so it should be visible from it?
02:05<kun>--reverse says it does it
02:06<fhenning09>anyone know if raspbian questions can b posted here?

02:08<twb>hm - if you (accidentally) code a cycle into the dependency graph, what does systemd do
02:08-!-mbock [~user@] has joined #debian
02:08<twb>ubuntu had on in 2010 when booting off NFS, because mountall(8) is a filthy kludge. Took forever to find
02:09<kun>list-dependencies showed what gns3 depends on, once i put --reverse in the only thing depending on gns3 is i will google that and what loaded; static is (which is now listed inplace of enable)
02:09<twb>kun: is probably a generic rule for "I want a GUI please"
02:09<twb>What RHEL used to call runlevel 5
02:09<jm_>don't have that one on my jessie system with systemd
02:10<kun>yup, but still i will read up on it. its new to me. never noticed it before

06:50<dpkg>Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) has graphical modes initialized by the Linux kernel instead of X. It is hardware dependent, introduced in Linux 2.6.29. Enabled via modprobe as of xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-2 and xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.12.192-2. 11:20<jetWhidbey>Ya, whole desptop
11:20<SynrG>it's possible to just reinstall the desktop.
11:20<SynrG>!install gnome
11:20<dpkg>To install GNOME: «apt-get install …» 1. 'task-gnome-desktop' (Debian installer default) 2. 'gnome' (recommended) 3. 'gnome-desktop-environment' (upstream GNOME) 4. 11:23<SynrG>jetWhidbey: so you are on wireless?
11:23<Minotaur>hi there, I got "SRST failed" on booting, what's the problem?
11:24<jetWhidbey>Right now using a windows machine on wireless.
11:24<SynrG>jetWhidbey: if you're on wireless and NetworkManager does not have a "share with other users" configuration for your wireless, you need to edit the one you created to share it
11:24<jetWhidbey>System I am attempting to recover has no network capability
11:24<SynrG>jetWhidbey: that allows you to reboot the system and then the wireless will come up even if the desktop does not
11:25<SynrG>that's assuming the only reason the wireless doesn't work is because it normally only works when the desktop is running
11:25<SynrG>if the problem is deeper than that, we can debug it
11:25<jetWhidbey>Oh, I am hardwired to network on my linux machine
11:26<jetWhidbey>Solution I was hoping for is to somehow install packages off a distro dvd

13:24<Eryn_1983_FL>hey peeps
13:24<Eryn_1983_FL>how do i set my locale?
13:24<dpkg>A locale is a set of rules for presenting information to humans according to local conventions (date format, thousands separators, language, etc.). Ask me about <locales> to establish on a Debian system.
13:25<dpkg>Use 'dpkg-reconfigure locales' to get it up and running. This generates <locale> definitions and also edits /etc/default/locale which sets the $LANG environment variable at login time. Use "LANG=C command" to change the output language for a one off command, ask me about <localised errors>. See also <mac locales>.

16:24<dewp>i'm not really sure if I got this right: i tested jessie the last weeks and loved it but 3d accelleration is still better with wheezy on my ibook g4. can i stay at wheezy for the next months / years and use backports, if needed?

16:37<viccuad>guys, how atomic is the debian update system? thanks in adnvace
16:38<valdyn>viccuad: it isnt
16:38<olasd>viccuad: it's not. you might want to expand on what you mean by atomic :)
16:38-!-wicope [] has joined #debian
16:38-!-jarkko [] has joined #debian
16:39<viccuad>atomic as in, If someone happens in the middle of it (power lost) or is closed by a lets say ctrl-c or killall -s SIGKILL, what happens
16:39<valdyn>viccuad: then things break
16:39<viccuad>valdyn: so, no atomicity at all, not even like checkpoints?
16:39<tremon>viccuad: the update stops and both your system and dpkg is in an inconsistent state
16:39<valdyn>viccuad: except in the ctrl-c case of course, thats clean
16:40-!-jarkko [] has quit []
16:40<olasd>dpkg is careful enough to make sure that files have hit the disk before replacing them (abundant use of fsync)
16:40<dpkg>You are person #1 to send an unparseable request, olasd
16:41<olasd>but apart from that, you're pretty much out of luck
16:41<valdyn>viccuad: the backend is not a transactional database, everything follows from that
16:41<retrospectacus>"apt-get -f install" will try to fix it
16:42<valdyn>retrospectacus: -f install recovers the ctrl-c case, that is all
16:42<tremon>apt-get -f install will probably tell you to run dpkg --configure --pending first
16:42<valdyn>viccuad: that atomicity you are asking for does not exist in general purpose systems anywhere
16:43<viccuad>valdyn: yeah, that's true. maybe you need to go with filesystems and snapshots and so better

23:37<somiaj>dingo: you have some broken packages, I dno't see an obvious reason. I do see what looks like to be third party repos, bitmask, rocks, torproject, etc. how about 'apt-cache policy mono-runtime'

23:46<somiaj>dingo: something is broken with mono on your system. first libdbu1.0-cli is killed, then one of the runtimes.d scripts keeps erroring out. Don't know enough about libdbus1.0-cli and mono to debug what is going on.
23:47<dingo>alrite :s
23:47<somiaj>dingo: your packages seem to be from debian and I don't notice any red flags being third party (though I am always weary of third party sources). I am unsure if it is corruption or maybe some core tool you have is third party and not compadable.
23:48<dingo>well bitmask is legit its from, mempo is debian hardning you can read more about it at debian wiki mempo
23:48<somiaj>dingo: apt-cache policy libdbus1.0-cli
23:49<dingo>pt-cache policy libdbus1.0-cli N: Unable to locate package libdbus1.0-cli N: Couldn't find any package by regex 'libdbus1.0-cli'
23:49<somiaj>dingo: yea I don't see any issues with the ones you have. They at least seem to be made for wheezy and so far all the packages that are having issues rae from debian. I can't spot the couse, maybe corruption.
23:50-!-ZombieL [] has quit []
23:50<somiaj>dingo: well the very first thing that is killed is line 3, installing 1 assembly from libdbus1.0-cli into Mono, that is killed. I wonder if the problem starts there. Because then $_ is undefined and it is just a chain
23:51<somiaj>dingo: there is the package
23:51-!-qable [] has joined #debian
23:51<dingo>well if u have a look at line 228 - 240
23:51<dingo>it might be a depency problem?
23:52<somiaj>dingo: no, it is line 3, that is the error.
23:52<somiaj>dingo: because that errors out, the scripts error out, the packges do not get configured, thus since they are not configured they cause a chain reaction of dependency issues.
23:52<somiaj>dingo: if you could configure the package I think those will go away. I have no clue why line 3 is being killed on line 4.
23:53<somiaj>dingo: * Installing 1 assembly from libdbus1.0-cil into Mono -- that is Killed (not sure if it a seg falut or what not). I would investiate why
