12:50<SynrGy>the cost to developers of supporting multiple init systems is a real concern. in this release, some compatibility packages exist to reduce the development burden, while continuing to support those different users who make that choice. my advice here is "try it and see". i suspect things will more or less be as easy as it was in wheezy to run whichever your preferred init system is. and maybe even easier now
12:50<sney>sysvinit scripts are no longer being maintained actively, iirc, but that's not a standard that changes very often (or at all) so they should continue to Just Work with sysv as long as both are available
12:50<jake_>SynrGy: Fabulous
12:50<muep>I guess the init script maintenance activity likely depends a bit on how interested their respective maintainers are in doing that kind of work. likely at least known fixes to bugs will get applied

17:53<ahall>I got the error that os-release couldn't be found, and then the boot dropped me into an emergency shell.
17:53<diego>I'm all ears
17:54<ahall>The file existed, but it's a symlink to ../usr/lib/os-release, and *that* didn't exist because /usr wasn't around.
17:54<ahall>So from the emergency shell I manually mounted /usr and replaced the symlink with the actual contents of the file (will paste in a bit)
17:55<ahall>So that /etc/os-release was a regular file.
17:55<ahall>Then I rebooted it it came up, and mounted all the volumes.
17:56<ahall>FWIW, my os-release is

21:43<svetlana>phobiac: download the relevant package to that system by hand and install it to make the ip command available?
21:44<phobiac>svetlana: I
21:44<phobiac>svetlana: I've realized that may be my only option
21:44<phobiac>Trying that now

21:53<diego>phobiac, if internet is not working try ifconfig eth0 up;ifconfig eth0;route add default gw
21:54<diego>that should set up a NIC eth0 statically in a private LAN address .2 with a gateway at .1
21:54<phobiac>diego: it turned out the iproute2 package was absent from my system
21:54<svetlana>phobiac: I'm wondering how you managed to remove that package in the first place :-)
21:54<phobiac>So I didn't have the ip command
21:54<phobiac>svetlana: I am too!
21:55<phobiac>It works now, time to see what else the update borked
21:55<svetlana>I might suggest to check /var/log/apt/history.log for that

21:55<svetlana>by default debian upgrades _rarely_ break things so narrowing it down to something speciic would be useful and appreciated :-)
21:56<diego>svletana, what is he, me too, supposed to look there for?
21:56<phobiac>svetlana: actually I just now went into my sources.list and I think I know the problem
21:56-!-lostson [] has joined #debian
21:56<phobiac>one of my deb lines used "stable" but all the others used "wheezy"
21:56<phobiac>so I got like... 1/4 of an update
21:57<phobiac>I'll make a copy of the log and look it over later though
21:58<svetlana>ah! user error. maybe there should be a script (and a package) to do this routine task but it's such a fragile file...
21:58<phobiac>svetlana: Yeah, entirely on me for not checking before a dist-upgrade
21:59<svetlana>at least a semi-automated warning that you've got different versions probably would work, I dunno. that's what the confirmation prompts when removing packages are meant to be for in the first place :)
21:59<svetlana>so I fear that re-iterating the need to read what it asks could be more useful than overcomplicating the thing and having users rely on lack of warnings while continuing to ingore the 'yes/no?' prompt
21:59<phobiac>svetlana: maybe something went you do dist-upgrade that checks if you're using the branches or the codenames and gives a big warning if you have a mix?
22:00<phobiac>you can only do so much to fix a PEBKAC
22:00<svetlana>then people would start thinking 'ok i have no big warnings, screw it i won't read the prompt' and that'll be outright bad
