06:36<Rikz33>Hello everybody. Yesterday I upgradeg from Wheezy to Jessie and now I can't access to the GUI anymore. During the installation I didn't see any error messages. I have a GTX 560Ti and I was using the nouveau driver and it worked well. I would like to keep using it if that's possible. Other people gave me some tips but none of them worked : checking if xserver-xorg-video-nouveau is missing : no
06:36<Rikz33>it's installed. I checked the logs and there is a strange entry : "LoadModule: "nv", Unloading nv, Failed to load module "nv" (module does not exist, 0). I also checked that the driver wasn't blacklisted. I tried to add the nomodeset=0 option and nouveau.nomodeset=1 in /etc/default/grub but it changes nothing. I also checked if the module is loaded at startup, it is. I really don't know what
06:36<Rikz33>to do anymore, if somebody could help me. Thank you a lot in advance for your help.
06:37<Rikz33>I forgot, I can access the command line interface only through the rescue-mode, if I start the computer normally I just have a black screen and can't access any tty.
06:40<Gabriel_7>Rikz33: do you have any /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

06:47<deux>can anyone help me?
06:47<Rikz33>Gabriel_7: Should I try : # service lightdm stop && X -configure ?
06:49<tremon>deux: "when I install", does that mean during installation or after installation? It will probably be helpful to blacklist either video driver, and see if the problem also occurs if you're using only one on the graphics cards

06:49<Gabriel_7>Rikz33: I think I'd try to use another display manager just in cas there is a problem with lighdm.
06:49<deux>it's after the debian installation (i install it manually). i don't know how to blacklist
06:49-!-CQ [] has joined #debian
06:50<deux>also - the reason i got to this, is because youtube displays green screen.
06:50<deux>thought installing the ATI card will fix it
06:51<tremon>I'm amazed the ati card works at all without the nonfree firmware installed. I thought all newer cards (since hd6000) don't work at all without it. Which card do you have?
06:52<deux>HD5470 :-)
06:53<Rikz33>Gabriel_7: I actually realised I don't have lighdm but gdm3. Is there one you advice or I just pick up another one ?
06:55<Gabriel_7>I guess lightdm should be fine, it's supposed to be lightweight. So if it's fine for you you might want to use this. (I'm currently using kdm however.)

06:56<tremon>deux: you can see which kernel modules are loaded with lsmod. The ati module is called radeon, not sure how the intel kernel module is called. See for blacklisting
06:57<tremon>in short, make sure you have a /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf file containing a "blacklist <module>" line
06:57<tremon>and update your initramfs
06:57<Rikz33>Gabriel_7: Okay, I'm now installing lightdm. I said I want it as default display manager. Now I reboot and see if I have a GUI ?

12:05<nevyn>nec: best would be download the debian source package update the original tarbal edit a bunch of stuff modify debian/control to mention it's a local build and update the maintainer details to yourself

12:06<nevyn>or you could be evil and use checkinstall
12:06<nevyn>nec: ^^
12:07<nevyn>in either case when debian updates you'll have to frob stuff to get that package back on the normal track
12:07<nec>nevyn: never heard of checkinstall; so I could just apt source the package, replace the tarball, and then run buildpackage? (in principle, I understand I should look up how to edit the package meta information)
12:07<nec>What would I have to "frob"?
12:08<nevyn>version and maintainer are the important ones
12:09<nevyn>in debian/control
12:09<nevyn>course if the package is vastly different like they've changed build tool or something
12:09<nevyn>all bets are off
12:09<nec>okay. Do I have to do this in a chroot or will buildpackage do this for me?
12:09<nevyn>do it all as you
12:10<nevyn>in the end you get a deb
12:10<nevyn>you install that with dpkg

14:32<oscarr>Do you maybe know, is there any tool, that may I use on Debian to make order in mp3 directories ? Rename dirs and files (that sometimes are using strange ascii codes probably) sort them etc. ?

17:35<draxdeveloper>How I do this on terminal?
17:35<somiaj>draxdeveloper: but I would deal with one issue at the time, i.e. either focus on trying to figure out what is wrong with your wifi settings or with your kde enviorment.
17:36<somiaj>draxdeveloper: just run 'adduser newusername' then give the user a password.
17:36<somiaj>draxdeveloper: you may want to add the user to some groups, 'adduser username group', but I'm unsure what groups would be needed just to test of kde loads.

23:10<foreigner>Hello, If I link against a package that is under GPL does it mean I have to license my code under GPL too or can I use BSD-3-Clause on it given it is GPL-compatible?

23:11<sney>foreigner: option #2. though keeping everything under 1 license does have simplicity advantages
23:12<sney>I haven't seen the 3-clause much lately but there are many packages that mix GPL and MIT/Expat, for example
23:14<foreigner>Thank you. I am just a bit perplexed by which license can be used or not and I can't understand the implications of GPL well-enough to use it. I would prefer using BSD because it seems more understandable to me and more permissive.
23:14<foreigner>Thanks again.

23:34<Keefe>i just dist-upgraded from squeeze to jessie and lost my network connectivity (currently accessing via serial console). ifup fails because no /run/network/.ifstate.lock. /etc/init.d/networking restart fails to get D-Bus connection. and reboot fails to talk to init daemon unless i use -f
