09:03<Guest4422>I am trying to install Debian 8.0 to an Amilo L7300 laptop computer by Fujitsu Siemens Computers (40 GB disk, 0.5 GB of random-access memory, 1.3 GHz Intel Celeron M processor). The installer failed to install additional software (e.g. GNOME) so I booted into the new minimal Debian and ran "$ sudo tasksel --new-install". I choosed to install GNOME and basic system software. When I returned to the computer, this was the screen: https://imgr

12:45<somiaj>you can backport it, though seems there is some issue with the newer intel drivers and xorg abi. Not sure if this is a compile time option, or if you just can't run the newer drivers on the version of xorg in jessie.

12:48<MeanderingCode>first time in ~8 years running debian on a desktop, instead of a server :)

12:50<MeanderingCode>fixing is only a problem insofar as time is concerned...my real goals are 1) not too much time fixing, 2) some cherry picked newer stuff like dual monitors on a dock, 3) contribute to testing
12:50<jgalt>how can I access an 8gb sd card on my system? lsusb lists the usb card reader it's in as bus 001 device 010, and /dev/hdb showd in /dev as the device but if I try to fdisk, fdisk says, "no media"
12:50<MeanderingCode>jessie gives me 1, but not 2 or 3

12:51<somiaj>jgalt: /dev/hdb seems strange device name for an sd card (usually usb stuff uses /dev/sdX, what I suggest is unplugging then plugging in the device, then look at 'dmesg | tail'

14:56<somiaj>SamB_laptop: what do you mean? If you want to boot using efi, then I would assume you should set it to efi (:
14:56<muep>if your system supports both bios-style bootloaders and efi, it mostly does not matter much
14:57<SamB_laptop>somiaj: basically I was wondering whether one *should* want to boot using efi, given the choice

14:58<petn-randall>IMHO UEFI makes more sense, you can benefit from faster resume times, and in dualboot you don't have two OSes fighting over the boot loader.
14:58<SamB_laptop>I guess that partly depends on what bugs/features/"features" your firmware has
14:58<muep>my system boots through an EFI bootloader, but mostly because I want to be familiar with that in addition to using BIOS-style bootloaders

14:59<muep>hm, gpt partition table might count at least as an admin-visible difference
15:00<SamB_laptop>somiaj: yeah, I guess it is nicer not to have to make a special partition just to store [the tail of?] core.img
15:01<SamB_laptop>and if dual-booting, it avoids making any one bootloader a single point of failure

21:51<awal>somiaj: in hexchat main window I just select oftc and freenode and I connect to both servers. no problems with both servers I just get that annoying message every time I connect to freenode
21:51<awal>I don't try to register nothing. my nickname in use is the one I chossed in hexchat window
21:52<somiaj>awal: because freenode thinks you are using a registered nick. But this is off-topic here. You can ask in #freenode if that nic is being used or if it is possible for you to register it. It might be you need to pick a different nic for freenode and configure hexchat to use a different nick when loging on to that network.
21:52<somiaj>each network has it's own database of registered nicks and will give annoying messages if someone tries to use the nick that isnt' the owner

22:50<SamB_laptop>phillipsjk: no, you use "dpkg -i" or debi
22:56<sney>and if it complains about dependencies you can 'apt-get -f install' after running dpkg

23:49<phillipsjk>well, the network manager gives me a list of networks in the area, but I am unable to connect. It seems flaky. If I try to change the connection settings, that list no longer appears (until machine restart)
23:50<somiaj>phillipsjk: are you picking something on the list that has very low signal strength?
23:51<phillipsjk>no, good strength. (wood frame construction)
23:53<sney>from the context earlier it sounds like you installed a wifi driver that came from somewhere else
23:53<phillipsjk>It may be related to how the USB subsystem of the kernel crashes when I unplug the device (even prior to installing the binary blobs)
23:53<sney>possibly to support a wonky wifi device not properly supported by the kernel
23:54<phillipsjk>I used the .deb package https://packages.debian.org/jessie/firmware-realtek

23:56<somiaj>phillipsjk: that isn't the wifi driver, that is just the firmware. Let's take a step back what wifi card do you have, what version of debian are you running?
23:56<somiaj>(I also find some the realtek wifi cards just buggy, I had one on an old laptop that just would flak out on me)
23:56<sney>they kinda do suck
23:57<sney>but they're a little better than broadcom on average
