11:03<unclezipper>Anyone know anything about VLANs? They're not exactly my strong suit... I have an isolated network that virt-manager is currently managing, and would like to migrate that to /etc/network/interfaces. As I'm reading in to it, I see some mentions of 802.1q and from where I stand, lines like "iface eth0.100 inet manual" appear to be binding the vlan to an existing interface. Is that necessary/is that what's happening?

15:12<caravel>Cf. my question here before, about partition alignment: I did my poor-maths and created partitions using parted specifying positions in bytes, to ensure they'd be aligned, thus I'd like to understand why fdisk says the contrary
15:13<TobiX>Don't current versions of parted align automatically?
15:14<caravel>yes, or they warn you otherwise
15:14<caravel>here parted is perfectly happy, fdisk must be wrong (?)
15:15<caravel>https://paste.debian.net/plain/175197
15:15<wltjr>having trouble with dhcp on fresh install sid, manually dhclient -4 eth0 fails, but dhclient -6 eth0 works, I set the config to use IPv6 and not IPv4. but it does not get an IPv6 address on boot or network restart http://www.mpaste.com/p/DCu
15:15<TobiX>caravel: The start of your first partition is 4.25 x 4096 bytes ?!?
15:15<wltjr>also makes no sense why ipv4 dhcp fails, but I don't really care, ipv6 does, just not sure why its not brought up on its own
15:15<knugen>another question i have while we still are on unattended-upgrades.. I'm a bit lost how to configure it for only security updates / jessie. Do i need to comment anything out from default? Just get errors from apt when messing with the conf-file

23:19<scruffh>So I installed Debian as a dual boot next to Windows 7. Intel Wi-Fi doesn't work because it needs non-free firmware. I plug in an Ethernet cable ... and nothing happens, the port LED doesn't even light.
23:20<sney>if you don't get link lights it's not a software issue. nic disabled in bios? bad cable? not plugged in all the way at the other end? etc
23:21<scruffh>If the laptop is restarted into Windows, wired connectivity works.
23:22<sney>huh, that's weird.
23:22<scruffh>I thought that too and tried swapping cables before rebooting. I used debian-8.0.0-amd64-kde-CD-1.iso
23:22<sney>should get link lights regardless of whether the driver is loaded etc
23:24<sney>maybe they're implemented in software. anyway, you can also download the firmware-iwlwifi package from http://packages.debian.org/ and copy it over, either by mounting a windows partition, or with a usb stick, etc
23:24<scruffh>This laptop had working wired and wireless with Wheezy. Odd.

23:26<sney>I pretty much always use the firmware installer these days. it's non-free of me, but saves work when I don't know everything about the hardware I wind up with
23:26<scruffh>I assumed that CD 1 has everything you need but maybe it lacks Ethernet drivers? Although that shouldn't preclude link LED function. The system doesn't even have Iceweasel, Libreoffice, or even sudo installed.
23:27<sney>no, ethernet drivers are in the kernel
23:27<sney>the CD1 images are a little strange these days since the desktop environments themselves are so big
23:28<sney>so once you get that and all the support libs etc... plus the other high scoring popcon stuff, like apache and mysql... there's not a lot of room left for common software

23:28<sney>I would guess sudo is indeed on the disc though, it just didn't get installed
23:29<scruffh>I'm going to try re-installing.
23:29<sney>!firmware image
23:29<dpkg>Unofficial <netinst> images - containing non-free Debian <firmware> packages - for installing Debian 8 "Jessie" are available from http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/ . See also <install guide>.
23:30<scruffh>With the cable plugged in and not declining the use of a mirror.

23:50<fcrs>i'm comfortable specifying bitmapped fonts (Terminus) for Urxvt using xfontsel/XLFD. but now i'm using a gtk+2 app (vim-gtk) which uses fontconfig. does fontconfig, and whatever underlying engine it uses (freetype?) know not to scale a bitmapped font? i.e. allow it to be displayed at unsupported sizes. also, how to i verify that anti-aliasing is disabled for such fonts? i've tried taking screen shots and zooming in but i'm not exactlu sure how to tell

23:52<awal>scruffh: you there?
23:54<awal>scruffh issue happened to me too days ago
23:55<sney>it's not exactly uncommon, thanks intel
23:58<awal>I did a minimal debian install (no DE)in a laptop that doesn't need non-free firmware, I declined the use of mirror and choosed 'no configure network now' and when installation finished I wasn't able to configure network manually, it doesn't detect wired(internet cable9
23:58<awal>I used dvd1
