00:00-!-trapier [~trapier@cpe-71-77-79-77.nc.res.rr.com] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
00:00<awal>even if one choose 'no configure network now' option, wired should be detected not?
00:01-!-trapier [~trapier@cpe-71-77-79-77.nc.res.rr.com] has joined #debian
00:01-!-wavekidsjp [~wavekidsj@h219-110-168-169.catv02.itscom.jp] has quit [Quit: bye..]
00:01<sney>yes, it should.
00:02<sney>you won't get a configuration, but the nic will work, that is
00:03<awal>with wheezy dvd1 or netinst , minnimal install (no DE) and slelecting ' no configure network now' wired and wifi works in tty1
00:03-!-overjoyedpulp [~overjoyed@c-76-109-193-178.hsd1.fl.comcast.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:03<awal>thats not the case using jessie dvd1 and netinst
00:04-!-pecg [~pecg@0001c1b1.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
00:04<awal>nothing work. wired should be detected for configure network manually but no, it doesn't detect it
00:05<awal>i had to reinstall and configure network durring install and then all fine
00:05<sney>what nic was it? e1000e?
00:05<awal>don't kniw whar happen with jessie dvds/cds
00:06<awal>nic?
00:06<sney>network interface controller
00:06<awal>no idea now sney
00:06<awal>sorry i no remember
00:06<sney>don't have the laptop anymore?
00:07<awal>i'm talking in the air. that machine is off now
00:07<awal>i'm connecte dvia my sid one
00:07<sney>ok.
00:07<awal>something is missing in official dvd 1
00:08<sney>well it's not missing if it works if you configure the network in the installer
00:08<sney>I wonder if it's doing something with module blacklists/initrd
00:09<sney>definitely need to know which device it is though
00:09-!-mlncn_ [~quassel@c-98-216-106-238.hsd1.ma.comcast.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:09<awal>with wheezy dvd/cd, even if network is not configured during install, wired is detected after install and one can configure it so
00:10<awal>as the guy said the port led doesn't light
00:11<sleser>on my laptop i have problem also with internet . if wifi is on and wire is on it works no good
00:11<awal>I tought that dvd1 is set for install without access to internet at all
00:11<sleser>then if wifi disabled while wire is on it works smooth and fast
00:11<awal>as it was with previous releases
00:12<awal>also, with internet not configured only gnome is available in dvd1
00:12<awal>if one choose different DE, that choosen DE is downloaded like using netinst
00:13<sney>where else would it come from
00:13<awal>in previous releases the DE are in the dvd
00:13<awal>i'm talking about dvd1, large image
00:13<awal>not cd1

00:14-!-curtis864 [~Esge@0SGAAAO4E.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has quit []
00:15<sney>if it's not there, then the installer team decided something else was more important
00:15-!-stickercletch [~stickercl@66.187.67.213] has joined #debian
00:15-!-rogst [~zapu@tor-exit-4.all.de] has joined #debian
00:15<sney>remember Debian isn't exclusively a desktop OS so having a lot of desktop stuff on the installer may be completely outside many people's use cases
00:15<awal>when i choosed ' no configure network now' I only had 2 choices in tasksel step 'install DE' : standard system utilities and debian desktop (gnome) , no kde, no xfce..
00:15<sney>popcon also weighs in
00:16-!-stickercletch [~stickercl@66.187.67.213] has quit []
00:17<awal>I'm not complaining. all fine sney. and I installed gnome. I like it. I'm just saying that many changes are made in the jessie installers and images
00:18<awal>compare dto previous releases
00:20<sleser>is there a debian release that works like ubuntu in terms of having all the apps ubuntu has in repository ?
00:20<centrx>Debian has more apps than Ubuntu...
00:20-!-bill [~bill@168.235.72.198] has joined #debian
00:20<sleser>like cdemu and most that i cant remember now
00:20<awal>so now, I think, only gnome DE is included entirely in DVD1. kde, xfce, mate, lxde and cinnamon are downloaded during install if network is configured. if network is not configured one only can install gnome
00:20-!-swgemu [~quassel@static-50-53-162-15.bvtn.or.frontiernet.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]

00:20-!-bill is now known as Guest4890
00:21<sleser>so one dosnt have to switch back and forth just to use a little app
00:21<awal>thats normal, all those DE can't fit in 1 dvd
00:21<centrx>sleser, For the one you mentioned, CDemu, I would download the source code and compile it on my Debian system
00:21<centrx>or source package
00:21<sleser>only if i knew how to do that
00:22<sleser>i read about it it sounds comlicated doing t he tarballs and compiling
00:22<centrx>Or find another program that does what you want CDemu for
00:23<sleser>is there something that i can get from apper that does cdemu ?
00:23<sleser>i know daemon tools for xp but i dont use windows for too long now
00:23<centrx>What does cdemu do/what do you want it for?
00:23<sleser>for debian i cant find anything
00:23<sleser>to mount an iso file so then debian things i have a dvd image in dvd drive
00:23<sleser>thinks even
00:24<sleser>basicaly makes the software think i have a dvd disk in a drive
00:25-!-Guest4890 [~bill@168.235.72.198] has quit []
00:25<sleser>i think cdemu creates a virtual drive
00:25-!-arlen [~arlen@jarvis.arlen.io] has quit [Quit: exit]
00:25<sleser>there so i can mount my iso and software finds it and works
00:25<sleser>it isnt a loop system
00:25<centrx>I don't think you need anything special to mount an ISO
00:25<sleser>because furius iso mount app and looping an iso or bin dosnt make the software work
00:26<centrx>You just use mount -o loop
00:26<sleser>that wont make it work
00:26<sleser>i need a daemon working
00:26-!-mrjazzcat [~mrjazzcat@c-50-134-253-3.hsd1.co.comcast.net] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
00:26<centrx>What software you trying to fool?
00:27<sleser>like mitchel on demand and reason 4
00:27<sleser>so far that
00:28<centrx>hmm
00:28<centrx>and that software uses the /dev device instead of the mount point?
00:28<sleser>im not a programer . but nothing will work until a daimon is working for cd
00:28<sleser>a virtual one
00:29<sleser>it has to work like cdemu does
00:30<sleser>i belive like you said debian has more apps then ubuntu thats not the problem
00:30<sleser>problem is just geting it installd to any name like jessie wheezy
00:31<sleser>one always has to like go trough backport to get it
00:31<sleser>or like you said compeling his own
00:31-!-linuxuz3r [~linuxuz3r@2602:306:bd2a:a160:3141:9739:b128:c9f8] has joined #debian
00:36<centrx>It just happens that Debian does not have cdemu
00:36<centrx>You can still install cdemu on Debian, it's just not part of the Debian release/repository
00:37-!-at0m- [~at0m@168.1.6.28-static.reverse.softlayer.com] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:38<sleser> that will be a 3rd party ?
00:39<centrx>right
00:39<sleser>then that crap is gona damige the debian ?
00:40<sleser>alot of the staf recomend not to go with 3rd party apps from other places
00:41<sleser>thats why i was conserned . if there were a virsion like so , im stuck always switching for every little thing here and there
00:43-!-rogst [~zapu@0SGAAAO5L.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:43<centrx>right that's why I would recommend compiling it
00:43<centrx>not installing a third-party package
00:43-!-measter1 [~dontron@tor-exit.squirrel.theremailer.net] has joined #debian
00:43<centrx>or you can download a binary
00:44<centrx>just install it to your home directory or to /usr/local
00:44<centrx>instead of doing 'make install'
00:44<sleser>show me one youtube video on what compieling is . on anysoftware
00:44<sleser>so i can get an idia what it is
00:44<sleser>dont show me book show me a video so i hear one like talk about how easy it is
00:46<centrx>Generally, it's just: 1) Install any required -dev packages (see software's readme file); 2) ./configure && make (repeat 1 if necessary)
00:46<centrx>run (2) from within the source directory
00:46<sleser>that that basicaly never damiges or interfears with debian release or the next upgrade ?
00:46<centrx>correct
00:46<centrx>'make install' is the potentially dangerous command
00:47<centrx>and if you make sure to run things as your local user (not 'root'), then you can't break your system
00:47<centrx>you could get some junk in your home directory accidentally, but it won't break anything
00:47<sleser>understanding
00:47<sleser>you explain very good
00:47<centrx>Thank you

02:52<Flow86>well but it seems that dpkg-reconfigure doesnt work anymore like in previous debian versions. in our old squeeze installations, it works like expected: I'll set my settings via debconf-set-selections, and dpkg-reconfigure -f noninteractive will use these to write the config files. in the new jessie variant, it always uses default values

08:53<adhawkins>http://paste.debian.net/175645/
