06:29<fanny>ho !
06:29<SynrG>themill: speaking of searching, judd claims only 3.16 is in sid. however, 4.0.0 now is. does it lag a bit for any reason? or is it just not in both i386/amd64 arches yet? or ... ?

11:22<juhaj>It seems any time I install something which can open pdfs, iceweasel picks that up as a new default, so now it wants to open pdfs with xournal; a while back it wanted to use xathura. xdg-open has always used okular
11:22<fanny>themill, that's a strange reason to not package it, since it does it for flashplugin which licence is crappy too.

11:30<juhaj>Brigo: Debian does deal with pdfs: it provides mimeopen and xdg-open! And alternatives has nothing pdf-related afaik. So the question is why does installing, say, xathura, change the behaviour of an unrelated program, iceweasel? I would venture that's close to serious bug: "breaks unrelated programs". It does not really break them, but seriously cripples them.
11:31<juhaj>Brigo: However, I don't believe this is due to xathura, xournal etc, but iceweasel because otherwise I would think they'd change the behaviour of something else, too

16:41<fanny>nope, clean clean clean.
16:41<Xenoth>Brigo_: OK. I've an older Dell Inspiron 1100. It has 512MB of RAM, a Celeron 2.4GHz. The BIOS is Revision A28. This BIOS version doesn't have a selectable size for video-ram (This model graphics driver uses RAM as video RAM). Anyway, text and graphics are somewhat garbled on Debian Jessie (8). I tried adding "nomodeset" "i915.modeset=1" and "i915.modeset=0" "acpi=off" and "vga=792" to my boot parameter, per
16:41<Xenoth> some online forum suggestions, but none of them have helped.

23:26<megamanx1978>Let me check
23:29<megamanx1978>no is is not listed in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/dmraid
23:30<somiaj>megamanx1978: well read that bug report, I think the issue is that, it is trying to be loaded in your initramfs due to the package dmraid, but that module no longer exists in the current kernel.
23:30<somiaj>megamanx1978: try to track down what file is configuring it to be loaded. I've gone over the places I've seen others say it should be

23:47<somiaj>megamanx1978: software raid uses software to make a raid of the various types (linking multiple hds together as one, sometimes it is a stripe, sometimes it is a mirror, sometimes it is a combination of the both, there are various types of raid)

23:51<somiaj>megamanx1978: in this light I would say yes, it is safe to remove dmraid. Now if you are using software raid this will make your system unusable. But it doens't sound like it to me.

23:52<megamanx1978>I know raid is a system for using multiple harddrives but I am not sure how it works
23:52<somiaj>yea it is nontrivial to install on raid, I would be surprised you are using raid without knowing you are using raid.
23:52<megamanx1978>Is software raid a package?
23:53<somiaj>so yes I would say it is safe to purge that package (purge over remove so you get the config files) and then create your initramfs with the command I gave above
23:53<somiaj>again this is some random guy on the net saying to do this on a system he dosen't know the detail
23:53<somiaj>megamanx1978: dmraid is a package to manage software raid.
23:53<beast>lol
23:54<megamanx1978>I said software raid not dmraid
23:54<somiaj>software raid is just a term to mean the raid is controled via software not via a hardware raid controler
23:54<somiaj>there are multiple types of software raid tools, and some are linked to the type of hard drive controler on your mobo
23:56<megamanx1978>I did not install dmraid it was already installed when I installed my os
