00:07<LadyAlissa>So, is there any way I can find out if/when a programming language update is going to be released on Jessie and/or other other releases?
00:10<somiaj>LadyAlissa: jessie is frozen so there won't be new software or new versions of software comming into jessie (cept for special cases). It just gets bug and security fixes.
00:10<somiaj>LadyAlissa: as for when software will hit sid and then migrate into testing, there is really no time line. When the matiner deems it is ready mostly.
00:10-!-hele [~hele@82-181-25-202.bb.dnainternet.fi] has joined #debian
00:10<LadyAlissa>Alright.
00:12<somiaj>LadyAlissa: as for what you mean by program/langauge updates. Sometimes things can just be in stalled in $HOME and you can install an update if you need one. Or look into backports.
00:12<somiaj>LadyAlissa: really depends on what you want to backport or install in jessie.
00:12<LadyAlissa>Automatic compiling it is :P

00:13<LadyAlissa>If I remember correctly, the stuff I need is programmed in ANSI C and with libraries installed on every Debian system that we (my team and I) set up by default.
00:15<somiaj>LadyAlissa: debian does provide a good build enviorment. Just make sure things are installed in /usr/local, /opt, $HOME as opposed to /usr, which you should reserve for stuff from debian packages.

01:27<himanshu>what is that for?
01:27<somiaj>himanshu: I dont think this is the issue, but I'm out of ideas. I do know those realtek drivers are fairly poor. I had a wifi card with them and my soultion was a $10 usb wifi dongle. but as you said it was working in wheezy.
01:28<somiaj>himanshu: rfkill looks for hardware and software kill switches that turn the wifi card off.
01:28<himanshu>somiaj: It was smooth like in Window 7 I used before wheezy
01:28<somiaj>yea its the drivers not the card.

01:29<somiaj>just saying I had a bad experience with that paticular realtek card and linux. But if it worked in wheezy, then it is just some strange issue and I can't think of where else to look
01:29<himanshu>I have the same version of rfkill already it says
01:30<somiaj>himanshu: so run rfkill
01:30<somiaj>what does it say about the hardware and software kill switch on your card

10:00<jthomas>Good day, I'm stuck and frustrated with LDAP 2.4.31 on Debian 7.8, trying to import from LDAP 2.4.23 on Debian 6.0.10. This D6 is slapd.conf and a master for a syncrepl setup; the D7 is a standalone test server using cn=config (i don't understand well the use of cn=config). On D6 I ran 'slapcat > 20150519.ldif' and on the D7 I'm trying to import this, 'slapadd -l 20150519.ldif'. This fails due to key pair existing.
10:01<jthomas>If I wipe clean the /var/lib/ldap/ database and dpkg-reconfigure slapd I can then import with 'slapadd -v -c -l 20150519.ldif' ; the import doesn't fail but ldapseach doesn't have needed records.

10:10<jthomas>the worst is that the cn=config stored things in the database, so I have no idea if I'm importing some sort of syncrepl setup with this.
10:10<petn-randall>jthomas: One of the problems is that in the "new" data layout, /etc/slapd.d/ is just the flat file backend to the cn=config database. You should never edit those files by hand. I learnt it the hard way.
10:11<petn-randall>jthomas: Yep, that's the annoying part :)
10:11<jthomas>annoying is an understatement
10:11<jthomas>in that case, everything I touch with LDAP is 'annoying' if by 'annoying' we mean 'very unclear'

22:42<somiaj>LiENUS: Kernels are usually provided via jessie-backports
22:43<somiaj>LiENUS: I would wait until the kernel makes it's way to testing and then is backported. If you need it right away I'm unsure how compadable the sid package would be and the basic answer is backport it yourself.
22:43<LiENUS>somiaj, yeah whatever the next one is doesnt have a new kernel yet
22:43<somiaj>LiENUS: the default on debian with multiple kernel packages is to then give you the option to select which one you boot from.
22:43<LiENUS>testing is still using the jessie kernel, heck sid JUST got 4.0 like 2 days ago
22:43<etienne>Yes, add sid in your apt.sources. Then apt update; apt install -t sid kernel
22:44<LiENUS>etienne, but apt-get upgrade will want to install all of sid

22:44<somiaj>usually the kernel is backported shortly after it hits testing. Since jessie release is still fairly new it is taking a bit for the normal flow of thigns to happen
22:44<LiENUS>somiaj, yeah theres a showstopper bug in the current kernel when it comes to mono :/
22:44<somiaj>etienne: that is very bad advise, please dont' give stable users the advise to add sid repos.

22:44<sney>kernels tend to be pretty self-contained so you can usually just download the deb from packages.debian.org and install it directly
22:44<etienne>somiaj: ok ill take note
22:44<LiENUS>sney, now thats an idea
22:45<somiaj>LiENUS: you could check the sid package and see if the depends can be satsified in jessie, if so it can be installed
22:45<sney>this soon after a release I would be extremely surprised if there was anything incompatible
22:45<somiaj>usually there are a few kernel related packages that need to be installed, but one major issue is dependency on initramfs-tools which then depends on libc6 and you may find that you have to upgrade core stuff.

23:00<LiENUS>actually makes it sound weirder
23:01<somiaj>sney: ahh yea, apt-cache policy linux-image-amd64:i386 aggrees with you
23:01<sney>an x86_64 cpu can run both 64-bit and 32-bit x86 code with no trouble. and reinstalling everything and getting all of my configurations back would have been more work. besides, I only have 4GB of ram, so it's not like one 32-bit process is ever going to use more than all of it
23:02<somiaj>sney: can you cahnge the default arch or would you have to reinstall? (never tried that, I think I have installed sid twice in the last 15 years. Once to switch from 32bit to 64bit in 2006ish, once to switch to efi boot
23:02<LiENUS>sney, yeah didnt get why you felt you wanted to upgrade to a 64 bit kernel
23:02<LiENUS>somiaj, debian has a guide to do it without reinstalling
23:02<somiaj>sney: yea it works jsut fine, I was just wondering if you could change the default arch that apt thinks it is, and then with multiarch over time switch things to fully 64bit.
23:03<sney>686-pae would have been fine with 4GB still. I don't really remember why except that I could, and I used to be a sparc64 guy so the arrangement is familiar
23:03<LiENUS>iirc theres 3rd architecture option wherein you use a 64 bit kernel and a userspace that uses 32 bit pointers but has access to the rest of the 64 bit stuff
23:04<sney>somiaj: I think a gradual switchover like that would inevitably break something
23:04<somiaj>sney: but it is sid, it could be fun! (:
23:04<sney>like, if I have a bunch of system libs switch to 64-bit but libc lags behind, etc
23:05<sney>oh well I'll just leave it for now, maybe my amd64 kernel will come
