00:01<somiaj>smokeless: I'mm not getting many hits on that exact device, I did find this for ubuntu http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2014/02/usb-broadband-modem-linux/, maybe it can be configured with network manager. But I have no experience with such things.

00:02<somiaj>so looking for that specific device I only find mention that drivers were added to the kernel, maybe 3.16 kernel is new enough. I do find some info on 4g usb drives in general.

01:10<kernelcorn>hey, this may be completely the wrong spot, but is there a channel to ask about setting up a wifi adapter and a satellite dish in order to get long-range wifi?

01:21<musca>kernelcorn: please be specific. words like "dish" are not helpful.
01:22<kernelcorn>I don't know a better term for it. The large parabolic dish for satellite communication, one from Dish Network.
01:22<musca>ah, i see, my bad, sorry
01:23<jm_>as in antenna
01:23<musca>well, setting up the wifi adapter in debian should be just standard. Which wifi adapter model do you use?
01:25<kernelcorn>just a wireless USB adapter. I meant more of the physical/electrical aspect of it, hence I don't know the right channel.
01:25<musca>lsusb| grep -i net
01:25<kernelcorn>my question is whether an antenna dish will physically work with wifi
01:26-!-zeromon [~zeromon@pc-69-212.ram.rwth-aachen.de] has joined #debian
01:26<jm_>my cousing used it and it worked OK (he found designs on the net), I also had wireless internet with just antenna, no dish
01:27<jm_>cousin too
01:27<kernelcorn>I'm trying to get Internet in a small cabin in Alaska. There is commercial wifi available across 1.5 miles of water
01:28<kernelcorn>maybe 1 mile
01:28-!-ponyrider [~ponyrider@CPE-121-209-244-25.egql1.ken.bigpond.net.au] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:28<kernelcorn>anyway, my currently plan is to put the USB wifi adapter at the end of a USB extension cord, waterproof it, and fiddle around with angling the dish until I get the best signal
01:29<jm_>just make sure the cable to it is as short as possible
01:29<kernelcorn>what are some common pitfalls to watch out for?
01:29<kernelcorn>the USB cable?

01:30<kernelcorn>because of low power, or bad data?

01:31-!-NomadJim_ [~NomadJim@dpc6744162212.direcpc.com] has joined #debian
01:31<jm_>well that would be from the wifi to the antenna then, but perhaps try to find some electronics/radio channels/forums to get better discussion

01:33<kernelcorn>jm_: I'm aware that I'm in the wrong spot. Are there any channels on OFTC or Freenode that might help?
01:33<jm_>kernelcorn: I don't know, /list would help if it works on this network
01:34<jm_>(I'm not saying it doesn't, I just never used it)
01:34<kernelcorn>it does

02:00<k-man>where does sshd log to?
02:01<jm_>how did you copy the file and which file?
02:01<musca>!ssh-copy-id
02:01<dpkg>ssh-copy-id is a utility to copy your <SSH> public key from your local machine to a remote machine, permitting key-authorised ssh connections to the remote machine. ssh-copy-id will copy the key to the right location and make sure the <ssh permissions> are right. You may want to edit your ~/.ssh/config to tell ssh to use this key. See also <debug sshd>.
02:01<jm_>heh I was trying to go towards that

09:58<laki>I haven't seen any issue
09:58<laki>yes
09:59<SynrG>then update-grub (which got called on the upgrade) should've updated your /boot/grub/grub.cfg to make the new jessie kernel your kernel.
09:59<laki>but file doesn't exist on both
09:59<SynrG>did you use 'apt-get dist-upgrade'?
10:00<SynrG>both what?
10:00<SynrG>if you only did 'upgrade', and not 'dist-upgrade' then your system is only half-upgraded.
10:00<laki>... I've done dist-upgrade
10:01<SynrG>i'm looking here at a jessie kernel (3.16.0-4-amd64) and confirm the module is there, as per mestia's results above
10:01<laki>very weird

10:02<laki>wait a minute - I think it may be problem with reboot
10:02<SynrG>yeah
10:02<SynrG>if you have kexec-tools and rebooted, it might leave you on the old kernel, for example.

15:58<Autofire>Tiberio: I'm not to familiar with Debian's compiling system (learned about it yesterday), but you might want to look into the 'rules' file. (Should be executable by default.) Read somewhere that this file contains the ./configure stuff.

15:58<somiaj>wargreen: I don't know enough about multicast ip messages to help. My guess is it is a configuration issue. You could try ##networking on irc.freenode.net or some place like that if you aren't getting any help here, or just ask again in an hour or so.
15:59<somiaj>!tell Tiberio about package recompile
15:59<somiaj>and as Autofire said, check the rules file, that is where configure options are set during the building process
15:59<adhawkins>dondelelcaro: The package doesn't automatically install itself as a service, that's something I've done. As such I need to (ideally) stop and start it before and after the upgrade.

16:02<dondelelcaro>adhawkins: man dpkg; for details; you'd want a --post-invoke command which ran after the install target completed and which reloaded/restarted the service if it had been upgraded
16:02<SynrG>Why doesn't it start as a service? Ideally file a bug with patch

17:41<himanshu>jhutchins: as per the point 2 in the manual I ran that command to create mongodb-org-3.0.list
17:42-!-pindy [~pindy@220-244-219-21.static.tpgi.com.au] has joined #debian
17:42<jhutchins>himanshu: If you're not using the debian packages, how are we supposed to know what's going on?
17:42<himanshu>it has this line "deb http://repo.mongodb.org/apt/debian wheezy/mongodb-org/3.0 main"
17:43<himanshu>jhutchins: sorry not sure what you mean here.. I was just following that manual
17:43<jhutchins>himanshu: It's in the Debian Jessie repositories, and that version probably works on jessie as packaged.
17:43<himanshu>I should not use their manual then?
17:44<jhutchins>himanshu: I would try the debian packages first.
17:44<himanshu>jhutchins: How?Please hint..
17:44<himanshu>by adding it to sources.list?
17:45<jhutchins>himanshu: THe command you asked about was to create the mongo-org repo source list, which would install their packages, which aren't meant for jessie.
17:45<jhutchins>himanshu: I would 1) remove that file, 2) aptitude update, 3) aptitude install mongodb
17:46<jhutchins>himanshu: I would check the debian wiki and the /usr/share/doc/mongodb/ files for more information.
17:46<himanshu>I tried editing that list to say wheezy/mongodb-org/3.0 main instead of jessie/mongodb-org/3.0 main .. sorry that was stupid?
17:46<jhutchins>himanshu: Again, mongodb is in the standard Debian jessie releases.
17:47<jhutchins>himanshu: I would just remove it.

17:48<himanshu>I mean for any other thing?
17:48<jhutchins>himanshu: I would guess that if they're saying they only have it for wheezy, they don't have a jessie repo available yet.

17:51<jhutchins>himanshu: _especially_ since jessie switches to systemd, and a package built for wheezy probably expects SysV init.
17:52<himanshu>I see.. thanks jhutchins

17:53<jhutchins>himanshu: I think that if the package is available in Debian, you should always try that one first, and see how Debian sets it up. If you want to try a third-party package instead, you'll know more of what to expect.
17:53<himanshu>yea thanks the download is in progress.. I followed the steps you mentioned..
17:53<jhutchins>himanshu: I've done exactly that with Drupal - instlaled from the official package, seen what it puts where and how it links it, then installed from the Drupal repos.

22:04<augusto>hey guys, I'm having some problems with my brightness adjust on my laptop
22:04<augusto>my graphic card is a radeon RS690
22:05<augusto>a curious thing: on GRUB and on the first seconds of the boot, I can change the brightness using my Fn+F1/Fn+F2 keys...
22:06<augusto>but after some seconds it is disabled
22:06<augusto>BTW: I'm using LMDE 2, which is based on Debian Jessie

22:08<dpkg>Linux Mint is not Debian and is not supported in #debian. Please use their forums at http://forums.linuxmint.com/ or join #linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org for support. Linux Mint is variously based on <Ubuntu> with a "Linux Mint Debian Edition" (LMDE) also available, based on <testing>. See also <based on debian>, <mintppc>.
22:10<augusto>thanks for the advice. but there is an outdated information here: LMDE 2 is based on stable (jessie) ;)
22:11<augusto>not on <testing> anymore
22:12<abrotman>it's still not supported here
22:13<augusto>and on the linux mint version based on ubuntu, the brightness adjust works right out-of-the-box. so I thought it is a Debian issue.
22:14<augusto>but ok, I'm not asking for this problem here anymore. thanks
