03:18<d-fence>Hi all. I need help with 'losetup' and loop device. On some older debian, I used to use losetup as a regular user. It worked. On newer installations, it refuse to create the loop, 'operation not permited'. I'm searching how to allow a regular user to associate a file with a loop device.

03:23<jm_>add them to group disk but beware as that will allow them to mess with your regular disk devices too
03:23<jm_>in general using losetup hasn't been needed for years unless you wanted to do something special

03:25<d-fence>jm_: It's for forensic purposes. I use that on regular bases. My user is already added to the "disk" group but it doesn't change anything.

03:25<jm_>d-fence: are you using debian?
03:25<d-fence>jm_: Yes
03:26<jm_>d-fence: in that case user has proper access to the loop device as such, it may be something else holding you back, try strace
03:26<d-fence>jm_: ok

09:02<dpkg>it has been said that diminishing returns on bogomips is where you spend more time compiling everything, but fare to gain less CPU time than you wasted in the first place. See also <diminishing returns>. Eg., Runtime savings vs compile time wasted.
09:04<SHOTbyGUN>yeah I know that principle, but yeah, but somehow I think AMD-FX processors might benefit from special flag building... as intel is pretty well optimized as is.

13:23<dpkg>Linux Mint is not Debian and is not supported in #debian. Please use their forums at http://forums.linuxmint.com/ or join #linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org for support. Linux Mint is variously based on <Ubuntu> with a "Linux Mint Debian Edition" (LMDE) also available. See also <based on debian>, <mintppc>.
13:24<venerable_penguin>hmmm
13:24<Maulkin>venerable_penguin: looks like #linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org :)
13:24<venerable_penguin>i always thought mint was based off debian
13:24<venerable_penguin>learn something new everyay
13:24<Maulkin>venerable_penguin: even with things based off debian, there's huge variances between what we do and what they do.
13:24<venerable_penguin>thanx you
13:25<zlatan>venerable_penguin, they have derivate based on debian but it's not same as debian
13:26<venerable_penguin>i just figured using dd and syslinux would be the same across all varients
13:26<zlatan>venerable_penguin, well using dd would be the go for usb (it works with debian)

17:45<jack1>I thought sh was for running programs?
17:45<blast007>jack1: dash I generally used for running scripts because it uses less resources that a full shell like bash, while bash is more useful as an interactive shell
17:45<jack1>should I install another terminal or do most people use bash?
17:45<alad>not all systems have bash installed by default, like openBSD - but all have a sh compatible shell, typically

22:00<reallydarkcloud>I suspect that would be using the 'Section' field (which you can see in apt-cache show), but it sounds like you might need to use apt-xapian-index to search based on that field

22:10<newbie>thanks. I just assumed there are thousands of people on here.....and I do not know the proper etiquette . :-)
22:12<tonyyarusso>newbie: Prefixing with the nick is normal, just not with the actual @ symbol. (Most people will have a highlight set up for their nick in some fashion.)
22:12<blast007>newbie: if you don't type an @, you can also use tab completion for names
22:16<newbie>thanks tonyyarusso blast007 and I just did the tab thing.
