#debian IRC Logs for 2015-06-06

---Logopened Sat Jun 06 00:00:17 2015
00:00<ryouma>SamB_laptop: it does not seem to have the ls colors env variable there. and i do not use that startup file. i have one account with .dircolors and one without and neither works.
00:00<ryouma>(and both accounts have the same dot files which do not set ls colors)
00:00<SamB_laptop>ryouma: notice the manner in which it invokes dircolors, however
00:01<ryouma>i'll try emulating that
00:01<ryouma>although it should work in the account without it right?

01:16<Snni>A start job is running for LSB: raise network interfaces
01:18<Snni>oh well
01:18<Snni>I used "ifmetric wlan0 0"
01:18<Snni>The problem is still here
01:18<appas>what is the metric for br0? it should be higher than the one for wlan0 - so, >0 in this case

01:34<appas>well, to get more info please enable "systemctl enable debug-shell.service". with that, you can switch to a debug terminal with ctrl+alt+f9 on boot, to see what's making the "raise network interfaces" hang (maybe)
01:34<Snni>I ran "ifmetric br0 600" it doesn't do anything
01:34<Snni>I'll do that
01:35<appas>are you sure it did not do anything? there shouldn't be any output

01:47<appas>yeah i rebooted with that as well. it did not really show any useful extra info (but does give a usable shell, if that's otherwise a problem). i guess you can disable it again, sorry, i'm also learning as i go :)
01:47<Snni>No prob man
01:48<Snni>Thanks though
01:48<Snni>Another strange thing btw. (Sorry)
01:48<appas>so let's see... if you take down br0, wlan0 will work, but otherwise the system tries to route traffic via br0 and won't be able to establish a connection to the internet?
01:49<Snni>before the wifi password for my network was saved and remebered so it would connectr again on startup
01:49<Snni>Now it prompts me on every startup
01:49<Snni>for my password
01:50<Snni>And yes, if I take down br0 the internet works
01:50<appas>huh... are you using NetworkManager to manage the connection to the wireless network?
01:50<Snni>Other wise ping returns host unreachable and the browser and stuff doesn't work

02:12<Snni>Should I try removing the br0 lines and rebooting then maybe?
02:12<appas>also, if you disable dhcp for br0, the bridged connection will not work as a dhcp client anymore. depends on your situation if that is ok

02:13<Snni>I'm not sure beyond that
02:13<appas>if it's entirely superfluous, you could simply remove it entirely and i think the routing should work after that

04:20<Snni>Would using an older version work? Or does that have compatibility issues?
04:20<Snni>Sorry about this
04:21<petn-randall>Snni: If you want to test the newer version, you're more than welcome. But keep in mind that we only support a full upgrade to stretch, not partial upgrades.
04:21<petn-randall>Snni: And keep in mind that a pre-release version will have a lot more bugs and rough edges than a released one.
04:22<petn-randall>Snni: The work-around is that you can simply import the config by hand, by opening it with an editor and setting the values in the settings of network-manager.
04:23<petn-randall>Snni: It's not great, but since most people don't import openvpn connections on a daily basis, it's doable.

04:31<garethr>If the laptop battery is malfunctioning it may be draining too much power from the charging circuitry and forcing the system to use less power for the CPU. I say this because I once had a laptop where the battery was shorting and the laptop would blank out when running a high CPU load.

09:08<appas>valdyn: it does not directly support pulseaudio, no. but alsa is lower level, so it should still work... right? definitely when there is only one device active, that should be the device controlled... but i guess my question was malformed, this maybe doesn't have as much to do with pulseaudio as it does with alsa
09:08<appas>alsa device default, channel Master does not do anything about the master volume, in other words

16:23<madez>Hello. I try to set up a user account to run a proprietary program which I like to isolate from my private data.
16:23<Ionic>stupid question, again: when using debian backports, one has to manually tell apt-get to prefer <version>-backports. does this also apply to packages that are not in the official debian repositories?
16:23<madez>I'd like that user account to have no password so every guest can use it.
16:23<madez>How can I set a user account to have an empty/no password?

16:24<madez>Ionic, If I don't put a password when I create the account, then I cannot login without giving no password.
16:24<Ionic>well, the problem is that an empty password means that the account is locked and nobody will be able to log in via password-based auth
16:25<Ionic>I don't think something like this is possible/allowed at all

16:25<madez>towo`, I did that, to no success

16:26<l0ner>Hi all
16:26<madez>I tried :!: and ::, neither works

16:34<Ionic>so logging in with any password will not work
16:34<madez>What is reasoning for not allowing password-less logins?
16:35<Ionic>madez: try logging in with a password of "a", won't do, but yeah, null passwd will probably suit you just nicely

16:36<madez>To use empty password as a flag for a disabled account. That is very hacky.
