01:03<twb>Short of enabling everything in sources.list and waiting AGES for "apt-get update", is there an easy way to say "what kernels are in each release" ?
01:03<twb>I can't use rmadison because I don't know the names of the packages, and the metapackages don't know about e.g. the kernels in experimental
01:04-!-DaFlave [~flave@cpe-74-138-132-121.kya.res.rr.com] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:04<twb>And looking on packages.debian.org is quite tedious because there are so many matches (because each kernel has a couple of variants for each architecture)
01:05<jm_>twb: /msg judd kernels :)
01:05<twb>Although I see since I last checked, 4.0 is in sid
01:07<twb>jm_: interesting, but that doesn't know about experimental either AFAICT. It seems to correspond to "rmadison linux-image-i686" or so
01:07<SamB_laptop>twb: can't you just ask rmadison to tell you about the "linux" source package?
01:07<twb>SamB_laptop: I think that's the metapackage
01:07<twb>Hm, maybe not -- there's a lot more there in backports
01:08<twb>http://sprunge.us/GEBA
01:08<twb>I'll check if experimental even has a kernel atm

02:35<TehBanana>hey guys, need some help downgrading from gcc 4.9 to gcc 4.7 on wheezy.. i had upgraded it using sid branch stuff, but i think it was the reason for some other stuff breaking
02:35<TehBanana>i keep getting stuck at: gcc-4.9-base:amd64 (4.9.2-10) breaks gcc-4.7-base (<< 4.7.3) and is installed.

02:37<naloth>twb, after you help TehBanana could you help me out pls
02:37<themill>there's no gcc-4.9 in wheezy and you're unlikely to be able to downgrade from jessie to wheezy
02:37<twb>I'm thinking you want something like aptitude install gcc/jessie gcc-4.9-base_

02:38<TehBanana>twb: i have tried doing install with remove at the same time, but it wont do it
02:38<twb>TehBanana: you can do a remove at the same time in apt-get ? How?
02:38<TehBanana>apt-get install newpackage removepackage-
02:38<twb>Oh sexy
02:39<TehBanana>the - makes it remove
02:39<twb>That used to be aptitude-only
02:39<TehBanana>can do apt-get remove removepakage newpackage+
02:39<TehBanana>too
02:39<twb>aptitude can also offer multiple resolutions whereas I think apt-get picks the first one
02:39<TehBanana>hmm.. i might give it a go with aptitude then
02:40<twb>TehBanana: so if you try adding gcc-4.0-base- to your list, what do you get? (The _ just means purge instead of remove)
02:40<TehBanana>which i cant do because of the issue im having right now -.-

02:42<twb>TehBanana: what does dpkg -P gcc-4.9-base say? If nothing depends on them, you could try just removing all the gcc packages first.
02:43<twb>TehBanana: it depends on your hardware, but you're probably right
02:43<twb>naloth: please pastebin xrandr output
02:43<twb>naloth: actually before that, does lspci -nn list both cards?

03:06<twb>It's probably all different now
03:07<naloth>twb, well i was thinking all i had to do is add monitor device and screen section in the xorg.conf the have the server layout set up right
03:07<twb>One was a Matrox G400 or so, I forget what the other was- probably an ATI r200
03:07<TehBanana>thanks for trying to help me out twb.. im just going to get a fresh VM and not fuck it up again by installing critical stuff from sid..
03:08<twb>naloth: we should check lspci first -- if the PCI bus can't see both cards, there's no point checking higher levels
03:08<twb>TehBanana: FWIW I always set APT::Default-Release in apt.conf so even if I add sid temporarily, I won't accidentally install (as much) from there
03:09<twb>But I have a feeling that's not Best Current Practice anymore
03:09<naloth>yes it does see both cards
03:10<TehBanana>for the game server i was doing it needed libc and gcc and stuff updated.. which i really should have known wouldnt end well
03:10<jm_>would be better to use sid chroot just for that or somesuch

05:38<Pono>somewhat wrong packaging question: https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/maint-guide/dother.en.html#conffiles states the following:
05:38<Pono>"dh_installdeb(1) automatically flags any files under the /etc directory as conffiles"
05:38<Pono>So on a new config file in a package forces dpkg to ask if I want to keep the old config. Is there a way to prevent such behaviour for a package (I am the maintainer)? The purpose is to get a cluster to consistent and tested state after a new package release. Unfortunately, I am unable to pass options to apt (Dpkg::Options::="--force-confdef" -o Dpkg::Options::="--force-confold") due to automated deploy system limitations. The only sane way

09:37<samb1>hi, am new to building .deb packages from source, just wondering why dpkg-deb --build looks for DEBIAN but the guides suggest creating the debian (lowercase directory and this is what pbuilder seems to look for) just wondering if there's a difference and why?

09:40<jm_>just use dpkg-buildpackage if you want to build it by hand, or better yet, debuild
09:41<petn-randall>samb1: DEBIAN/ is in binary .deb packages, debian/ is in the source package.
09:42<jm_>dpkg-deb --build is the opposite of dpkg-deb --extract I suppose

15:59<blast007>!undelete
15:59<dpkg>Linux doesn't generally support 'undeleting' files. For ext3/ext4, ask me about <ext4magic>, <ext3grep>. For ext2 *only*, use mc (Midnight Commander), umount the filesystem, and select "Undelete files" from menu. With reiserfs, jfs, xfs, you're SooL. Some desktops (GNOME/KDE) offer a trash bin. See also <photorec>, <fatback>.

19:45<Celelibi>How do I gently ping someone for a bug that has a proposed patch but hasn't been updated for more than a year?
