03:20<Zonjai>Hello, I have a question regarding an issue I encountered and I need someone to double check it.
03:21<Zonjai>I ran 'apt-get remove vlc' and it attempted to remove all of KDE with it. Can anyone attempt a simulated apt-get command and see if they see the same?

03:24<Zonjai>But why would it remove all of KDE by just removing VLC?
03:24<Zonjai>What possible dependencies? I looked at 'apt-get rdepends' and I did not see which would do it
03:25<AlexLikeRock>try remove vlc an "evriting KDE "
03:25<AlexLikeRock>later instal KDE again ;-)
03:25-!-etp [~etp@espcolo-webproxy01.nokia.com] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
03:25<Zonjai>that seems like a major bug if removing VLC removes all of KDE
03:25<Zonjai>I am still walking through it trying to figure out what dependency

03:26<AlexLikeRock>Zonjai, why you unistal vlc ?
03:26<AlexLikeRock>its a good player :O
03:27<Zonjai>Personal choice. I love it, but recent changes that made it into Jessie have made me look for other players. I attempted to remove it while trying others.

03:28<AlexLikeRock>the same is hapen whit gnome when you want to uninstall something ...
03:28<Zonjai>but vlc is not a part of kde, so nothing in kde should depend on vlc
03:29<AlexLikeRock>Zonjai, try smplayer , they have a better quality with videos
03:29<AlexLikeRock>but the interface of smplayer i dont like so much :-S
03:29<Zonjai>I love mplayer and I use it for most of what I do. But my bedroom computer used vlc and its web interface
03:29<Zonjai>the web interface now requires a password and so I am looking for alternatives
03:30<AlexLikeRock>stop wasting time on vlc relationship with kde
03:31<Zonjai>Why? KDE should never depend on VLC.
03:32<AlexLikeRock>it a example
03:32<AlexLikeRock>i dont now
03:32<AlexLikeRock>maybe its a bug
03:32<jm_>do you have APT::Get::AutomaticRemove enabled perhaps?
03:32<AlexLikeRock>maybe how cares
03:32<Zonjai>That is what I am trying to nail down to file a bug report
03:32<Zonjai>jm_, No, I do not have auto remove enabled

05:55-!-abirot [~abirot@orangevallee.GW.opentransit.net] has left #debian [Quitte]
05:55<mgv>generally you start X by logging in and running startx, or by installing a DM which starts X automatically
05:56<twb>Does passing "single" still work to disable the DM (among other things)?
05:56<mgv>it should work
05:57<twb>Cool
05:57<mgv>or if it doesn't, init=/bin/sh always works
05:57<twb>I vaguely remember seeing something like default-target=single-user
05:57<twb>mgv: that's more horrible tho
05:57<mgv>true, but more likely to work :)
05:58<twb>It doesn't do... something. I forget what. Not RAID & LVM & LUKS, because they happen in ramdisk and are blocked by "break" but not "break=bottom".
05:58<mgv>init=/bin/sh means no init scripts, while single still runs the init scripts in rcS.d
05:58<twb>Ah maybe networking
05:59<twb>Oh well, whatever.
05:59<mgv>right, no networking with /bin/sh. but you can do ifup eth0 and you'll have internet
05:59<twb>sapientech: do you know how to get to your bootloader (probably GRUB) and add extra kernel options?
05:59-!-biosprint [~biosprint@9S0AAAXU7.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has left #debian []
06:00<sapientech>yes i do
06:00<sapientech>and it is grub
06:00<twb>sapientech: OK we want to know if the problem is just in X, so we need to start your computer without starting X.
06:01<sapientech>sorry, what is X?
06:01<twb>sapientech: one way to do that is to add "single" or "init=/bin/sh" or similar as a boot option
06:01<mgv>sapientech: the thing which gives you a graphical interface
06:01<twb>sapientech: X is the stuff that gives you pretty pictures instead of just text
06:01<sapientech>got it
06:02<sapientech>okay cool, so i’ll add the init line and report back
06:02<twb>You only need to add it once, not for every boot
06:02<twb>This is just for testing

06:53<Kakila>jm_: what od you mean? I should copy the image in a different way? I was using parted just to diagnose why it was not booting. It seems the partition somehow is not well defined...it should be fat* right?
06:54<jm_>if that image was smaller I'd try it, but it's 1.4G
06:54<jm_>Kakila: no, just saying that it looks like parted is not ideal tool to check the partition table
06:55<Kakila>jm_: ok, right now I am following the dd method. When it is done I will check again
06:55<jm_>Kakila: dd and cp should do the same job, I don't expect it to be any different unless cp reported an error

12:06<steffkes>in the past, we were in charge of deployments and could try several things and stick with whatever we did like best. now, the situation is a bit different: developing a product, the client is hosting all the hardware and their IT department decides whenever to upgrade. which is completely fine for me (as in, i understand why they'd like to do that), only opens up a few questions - which i didn't have to a
12:06<steffkes>nswer in the past ;o
12:07<steffkes>like whenever we release a new version (currently looking at fpm + aptly, which looks really good) .. the way to upgrade a package looks straight forward. what i'm worrying about is a downgrade, to explain why:
12:07<steffkes>i was thinking to build our application as package, including all the dependencies (nginx, php-fpm, postgres, rabbit, ..) which would include database migrations. hopefully not that many, but at least a few
12:08-!-superusr [~tf@cm56-159-73.liwest.at] has joined #debian
12:08<steffkes>when the client would upgrade the package, i could check in a post-install-script (or something like that) if there are migrations missing and apply them.

12:09<steffkes>valdyn: as in, downgrade equals "installing the package again, with a specific version", right?
12:10<valdyn>steffkes: checking dependencies in post-install is really stupid
12:10<valdyn>steffkes: checking dependencies is done by the package manager
12:10<valdyn>steffkes: pretty much yes
12:11<steffkes>valdyn: that isn't what i've intended to say. dependencies would be configured as suggested / normal way. what i'd do in a post-install is checking if i have to apply migrations
12:11<steffkes>which sounds to me like it's the best way to do something like that

12:12<steffkes>okay, i guess we're on the same side about this one :)
12:13<valdyn>steffkes: debians database packages typically supply a path to migrate, debians configuration in /etc/ is typically transitioned by post-install
12:13-!-fralle [~fralle@83.241.162.219] has quit [Quit: leaving]
12:13<steffkes>valdyn: you're talking about system-configuration that might be stored in /etc/ right?
12:14<valdyn>steffkes: where "path" is just a message "run this to migrate your db"
12:14<steffkes>ah okay, gotcha
12:14<valdyn>steffkes: no, its not "system", its "package"
12:15<steffkes>i have to be more explicit about my wording :) system was meant to say "application specific" which indeed would be the package we're talking about
12:15<steffkes>so it's like with most deployment tools as well .. rollback is somewhat there, but nobody really uses it. better prepare for another (forward) release/update instead
12:15<steffkes>is that what you're suggesting valdyn?
12:16-!-dandersson [~daniel@c83-248-160-230.bredband.comhem.se] has joined #debian
12:16<valdyn>steffkes: you are free to supply scripts that support downgrading, thats not particularily hard within your own packages
12:16<valdyn>steffkes: but debian maintainers do not do that - so debians packages do not support downgrading
12:17<valdyn>steffkes: still the most common diff between 2 package versions is small enough that it makes no difference
12:17<steffkes>that was one idea i was having .. but i was thinking if that is a nice solution. anything package-related in regards of package handling doesn't sound that good. like in "having a custom <something> to perform downgrades/upgrades or something else related to your package"
12:18<steffkes>while there is an "official" way to perform them .. or rather not, as you've just explained :)

13:42<Zonjai>If you do 'apt-get remove vlc' It attempts to remove 123 packages including KDE. I narrowed this down to the phonon package. Phonon has a dependency of either phonon-backend-vlc or phonon-backend. But phonon-backend is purely virtual.
13:42<Maulkin>Zonjai: Well, what's your problem?

13:42<Zonjai>phonon-backend-vlc depends on vlc-plugin-pulse and that depends on vlc. So removing vlc removes all of them.

13:44<Zonjai>Wait, I finally found alternatives. I must be tired. phonon-backend is also provided by phonon-backend-null. So, is this a bug to remove all of KDE? Shouldn't it install another phonon-backend provider
13:44<Maulkin>Zonjai: perhaps you need phonon-backend-gstreamer? That provides phonon-backend

13:46<Maulkin>Zonjai: Not really. It doesn't know which phonon backend to install. It does provide a default (ie: the -vlc version) but if you deviate from that then you need to work out what you want to happen yourself.
13:46<Tiberio>or I strike *i* key and I get *iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii* up to I strike an other key to stop it
13:46<Zonjai>Thank you Maulkin, I now see the alternatives. Also, thank you for that input.
13:47<Zonjai>It just seems odd that I could kill my entire KDE install without an easier way to know what package caused the issue.
13:47<Maulkin>Zonjai: You can also do: aptitude search '~Pphonon-backend'
13:48<Zonjai>I had issues finding the other phonon-backend providers as I kept trying an apt-cache show phono-backend and it showed me nothing. It wasn't until I did a apt-get phonon-backend -s did I see the alternatives

13:54<Tiberio>Maulkin, yes. very different hardware and slightly different software: 1 Desktop AMD64 + USB keyboard, brand new Jessie; 1 laptop AMD64 + "internal" keyboard. Both computers run good in win OS
13:54<Maulkin>It's basically Edit -> Profile -> Colors or something like that
13:55<Maulkin>Tiberio: I'm assuming that it's gnome desktop, and you're seeing the issue on both of them?
13:56<Tiberio>addition: laptop is debian powered since some years, so it has squeeze, wheezy, jessie for sure
13:56<hillebrand>back, seems to work nice, i was able to select some themes, solarized dark doesnt seem to overwhelm my eyes, but it also doesnt look too dark

17:36<sapientech>hi there, getting a black screen with cursor in top left corner after booting from grub. have successfully booted into single user mode, so I think the issue relates to X. Doing this on a macbook pro with radeon graphics card. have tried adding radeon.modeset=0 and nomodeset to bootloader to no success. any ideas?

17:40<mdik>sapientech: maybe installing some non-free firmware
17:41<mdik>sapientech: also: what happens when you disable the display manager/X from automatically starting and boot up normally?
17:41<mdik>then you should get a "normal" console, can start X and see if it spits out error messages
17:41<mdik>also looking into the logs is most often helpful
17:42<sapientech>okay, cool, so i edit this on grub to force computer to boot in text mode?

17:44<sapientech>and this would be done by booting into single user mode?
17:44<mdik>but my first step would be to install all non-free kernel modules i can find which seem relevant
17:45<mdik>i guess you could do it there
17:46<mdik>i am basically as clueless as you are. good night and much success!
