06:11<andreas__>is it possible to burn dvds with debian? after a failed attempt, i did some research, and it seems that a non-free program 'cdrecord' is required because growisofs actually doesn't work. am i missing something?

06:16<valdyn>andreas__: you miss something
06:16<valdyn>andreas__: once upon a time the hardware interface to disk burning was not standardised, but now it is
06:17<valdyn>andreas__: and writing a dvd burning program is trivial and there's a ton of those and growisofs works too

06:18<andreas__>valdyn: are you sure? k3b and xfburn both failed me, and according to the k3b bug report it's due to a bug in growisofs
06:19<valdyn>andreas__: a bug with burning specically? what happens when you do "growisofs -Z /dev/dvd=file.iso" ?
06:21<valdyn>andreas__: that bug is from 2011
06:22<andreas__>valdyn: hang on... trying without gui now
06:22<valdyn>andreas__: they specically say that growisofs did not finalize blueray properly. BluRay is not dvd.

06:24<valdyn>andreas__: and something else in that bug report: "This does not happen with DVDs. Bundle some files and burn. "
06:24<valdyn>andreas__: so if you are really about dvd then this bug report does not apply.

13:46<somiaj>LetsFindOut: why do you want it to act like a usb pen drive?
13:47<somiaj>LetsFindOut: i.e. there are ways to create virtual file systems and make them availble to virtual box as say a hd or a cdrom
13:47<LetsFindOut>somiaj: for many reasons, one of them is to make a usb pen drive for tails,
13:49<somiaj>I don't use virtual box that much, but I did find this. https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=9537, it may have an answer I stoped reading about the time someone asked the same questions I did, why can't it just be a vitrual disk image.

13:54<LetsFindOut>somiaj: just read this answer and tell me if you understand what he says? When you create a virtual disk image (VDI) and mount it onto a emulated USB device, it will be treated as a virtual USB flash drive.
13:54<sney>VDI is something you make within virtualbox
13:54<somiaj>LetsFindOut: sounds right, again it is just a virtual disk image, then mount it using something. But I haven't played with it much

15:36<hadi>this post (https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Dell/Dell%20XPS%2013%209343) suggests upgrading to kernel 3.19 but doesn't really specify why
15:38<zlatan>hadi, I think for newer generations of xps 13 it is needed to work properly (ubuntu kernel maybe backported some modules)

15:41<hadi>thank you for the suggestions
15:42<zlatan>hadi, I don't know how much experienced user you are but if you feel comfortable you could upgrade to testing
15:43<hadi>zlatan, i did that a while ago. my main issue was that it would be stable, then things that were totally fine would break a week later in for instance gnome ... that was very frusturating.
15:43<lostatwork>that is the fun part of testing
15:44<zlatan>biggest problem on gnome would be probably extensions, polkit (damn things does like to mess more then I would like) and maybe systemd updates
15:45<zlatan>as I said I had similar lockdowns about 2-3 months ago but not recently that I can remember (but then again I run unstable with experimental so I must love that :)
