00:13<dakka>hi, i am trying to change my hostname, I used these instructions: https://wiki.debian.org/HowTo/ChangeHostname and now I get unable to resolve host my_old_hostname
00:14<dakka>I've also tried several things from searching the web, and nothing seems to make a difference

00:17-!-hele [~hele@dkqygbhd190658-3.rev.dnainternet.fi] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:18<dakka>never mind i worked it out, i have to say debian documentation is horrifying! Nothing ever works from there, I would expect it to on a default newly installed system

00:31<clowninasack>dakka: Care to share the solution with us?
00:31<clowninasack>dakka: And what the problem actually was?
00:31<dakka>yea sure...umm let me find the command

00:32-!-swo [~swo@ip-37-201-109-220.hsi13.unitymediagroup.de] has joined #debian
00:33<dakka>almost every post i saw including the debian site, states to edit the /etc/hostname and /etc/host file then run a script to reload the hostname
00:33<clowninasack>dakka: Also I'm sure you'd be welcome to help make documentation better.
00:33<dakka>that did not work, it just kept saying unresolved hostname
00:33-!-sleser [~sleser@ool-1892fcef.dyn.optonline.net] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
00:34<dakka>what i needed to do was change the kernel hostname (I have never heard this before, first time)
00:34<dakka>to do that I used the command: sudo sysctl kernel.hostname=
00:34<dakka>and added my new hostname to the end
00:34<dakka>running sudo sysctl kernel.hostname on its own showed that I still had the old hostname
00:35<clowninasack>interesting
00:35<clowninasack>maybe update the wiki so others can benefit from your troubles
00:36<dakka>I am a linux/debian beginner, i would not be very comfortable editing documentation, as I consider myself to be clueless...lol
00:36<dakka>however if someone could confirm stuff for me, i would be more than happy to edit the wiki
00:36<dakka>would be even worse to have a n00b like me changing things, when I really dont know what I am doing...lol
00:36-!-fix [~wadafuq@ip68-12-3-254.ok.ok.cox.net] has joined #debian
00:37<clowninasack>can always rollback, but i'm not sure if they allow editing by anyone. I think you could probably suggest an edit though
00:38<clowninasack>actually it says it's editable by everyone. worst case they can rollback changes
00:38<dakka>someone would actually listen or allow changes? I am not sure how this stuff is maintained, but it would be great to be able to send in stuff that works to someone that can proof read and then update
00:39<clowninasack>"It is freely editable by everyone and participation is actively encouraged by anyone who can see a way to improve it." https://wiki.debian.org/DebianWiki

00:39<clowninasack>lots of info on that page
00:40<dakka>ok i will check it out, i am just very hesitant, cause i really have no idea what i am doing
00:40-!-phillipsjk [~james@d137-186-252-119.abhsia.telus.net] has joined #debian
00:40<clowninasack>dakka: I would read that page - it has info for beginners.
00:40<dakka>I just try and look stuff up, make an educated guess, and then trial and error till it works
00:40<clowninasack>Only way the documentation gets better is if we make it better.
00:41<fix>B~O:
00:42<dakka>I scanned it, will read it properly later, perhaps I could drop my suggestions in here, then if someone confirms its correct I can then make the change

01:41<towo^work>venky, your question does not make any sense
01:42<appas>venky: look into the autotoolchain, you typically do not make a makefile, you make automake rules and get a generated makefile

02:40<sleser>guys im not quaet sure if its a deboan quastion . when i tell my coleges or friends i use debian they tell me i live in a cave
02:40<sleser>whats the diference between ubuntu or fedor or a user who use debian
02:41-!-Akhil [~eswecha@117.239.135.55] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:42<sleser>i realy would like an openion . because it isnt just my friends itsomethines chanels that apps provide that give me a bad look as well like if i tell them i use a sertein vission that comes with debian they tell me im too old
02:42<sleser>thats retuarded
02:42<sleser>im happy with what i use just not quet sure wuts the problem between everybodies openions
02:43<appas>personally, i've used ubuntu and red hat before, and i've been the happiest with debian. to each their own, i guess.
02:43<appas>i consider ubuntu a more or less broken debian. it's kind of a shame that it's gotten so popular, because some applications seem content to provide packages solely through a ubuntu ppa :/
02:44<appas>well, i dunno how much ubuntu actually has in common with debian, besides using the same package architecture (and that's what i mean by "broken" - binary incompatibility)
02:45<sleser>well debian can have a ppa too if only a ppa app downloading goes to separate location
02:45<sleser>and be even betwer then ubuntu
02:46<sleser>so if then upgrade debian that partition whitch ubunty looking like is left alone and upgrade a rite partition not to damige ubuntu like files as well
02:47<sleser>install or downloading of i mean
02:48<sleser>something sort of a debian beter then ubuntu in one hd with debian not to damige and any installs must go to setein drive so if then any new upgrades for debian not to damige the apps as well
02:48<sleser>sort of a thig

11:12<redlizard>So, I'm trying to get my amd HD 7770 to work on my jessie machine, using the radeon driver. According to the x.org wiki this card fully supported by the xorg radeon driver.
11:12<redlizard>But it does not appear to be supported by my kernel (3.16), judging from the fact that no firmware is loaded for it. The practical consequence is that X works, sorta, but there is not even 2D acceleration -- dragging a window is painful.
