01:38<phillipsjk>I was experimenting with the "Switch user" function in xlde. For about 15 minutes one of the 3 instances of Xorg (Xinerama, So I think one instance per head+1 for the DM?) was using like 99% of the CPU (1 of 2 cores) for no obvious reason.
01:38<phillipsjk>When I logged onto the channel here to ask about it, it calmed down.

01:42<phillipsjk>I think my best guess is that one or the random screen-savers I have selected laod X.org even if nothing is displayed. i was kinda hoping xorg would not load the CPU if no drawing is happening.

02:23*phillipsjk now has to find and disable the CPU hog they missed.

10:30<c0de123>hi guys. i am trying to do a brave dist-upgrade from squeeze to jessie and run into an error: E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'libdevmapper1.02.1'. Please see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. (2)
10:30<c0de123>any help would be appreciated
10:30-!-pezus [~pezus@gw1.cgn3.hosteurope.de] has left #debian [Leaving]
10:31<SynrG>absolutely not
10:31<SynrG>this is a big mistake
10:31<SynrG>there's nothing "brave" about dist-upgrade from squeeze to jessie. it's suicidal
10:32<SynrG>you dist-upgrade from squeeze -> wheezy, then from wheezy -> jessie
10:32<SynrG>you can't skip releases like that
10:32<SynrG>i hope it didn't let you upgrade anything yet ...
10:32<SynrG>if it's not already too late, edit your sources.list and finish the upgrade to wheezy. when that's done, do the wheezy->jessie upgrade.
10:32<peter1138>Yeah, you need to upgrade to wheezy first.
10:33<centrx>It would be even more courageous if you upgraded squeeze to unstable

10:38<SynrG>c0de123: just to be perfectly clear, it's not just a matter of "obvious" problems like the error you've run into. don't believe for a minute that all you have to do is solve each one of these issues and then you'll be fine. there's no knowing what *invisible* damage you might cause to your system skipping a release like that, and that will give you months of grief afterwards.
10:39<c0de123>ok...
10:39<SynrG>c0de123: the reason for this is, each release contains maintainer scripts that are designed and tested on upgrades from the *immediately prior* release. there's no knowing how they'll behave in other scenarios

13:27<Guest2983>I could make it exciting right?
13:28<muep>especially the default setup in debian is quite intentionally boring and unsurprising. but debian includes tons of software that you can configure to behave in exciting fashion
13:28<blast007>Guest2983: and at least for installing Debian from a flash drive, you want to avoid tools like unetbootin as they just make a broken installer. The Debian ISOs are hybrid so they can be written directly to a flash drive. https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch04s03.html.en
13:29<LetsFindOut>Guest2983: use your favorate desktop on debian, you need different UI, not different distro, so look for different desktops, kfce, gnome, cinnamon etc. and for this discussion, you can go to #debian-offtopic

13:39<Guest2983>thank you blast007 and LetsFindOut
13:39<muep>usually you'd be better off following instructions provided by the distro, rather than assuming that some extra tool can make it better than the distro developers
13:39<Guest2983>and pardon the bad language, it's the only way it seems to get reply in these chats. LOL
13:39<muep>at least most of the large, well known distros are fairly good at making things boot in different kinds of weird hardware
13:40<blast007>Guest2983: and no, it's not the only way to get a reply... patience is a much better way
13:41<Guest2983>I have before waited for an hour and repeated the question several times, no replies and the chat wasn't busy. so I dropped an "F" bomb and boom! got all kinds of replies LOL it was funny

13:49<LetsFindOut>Guest2983: that was not nice, whenever someone see your question, he/she will reply to it, so ask your question in a full, and wait, or reask after reasonable time. i also came to ask a question, no one has replied me yet and i'm waiting...

14:00<petn-randall>phillipsjk256: when looking at /var/log/kern.log, do you see any difference when plugging in the webcam, with or without the hub in between?
14:01<petn-randall>phillipsjk256: It could be that it e.g. can't run on USB 2.0 speed, and thus fails to work.
14:01-!-zem [~voodoo@00016a79.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
14:01<petn-randall>phillipsjk256: Do you know if the hub is USB 2.0 compatible?
14:01<phillipsjk256>"98109.022009] usb 2-2.2: rejected 1 configuration due to insufficient available bus power" might do it.
14:01<blast007>phillipsjk256: it sounds like a bus-powered hub may only supply at most 100ma to an attached device, so perhaps the webcam needs more than that?
14:01<petn-randall>phillipsjk256: Yeah, sounds like a power problem then :)
14:02<phillipsjk256>so I need a powered hub then.

14:03<phillipsjk256>Is there a way to tell it it can probably draw 400mA?
14:03<petn-randall>phillipsjk256: The USB 2.0 spec allows up to 500mA, IIRC. I guess it's the hub that says it can only do 100mA.
14:04<phillipsjk256>well, I know what to do now I guess.
14:04<phillipsjk256>This is a USB 1.1 HUB and the machine I am pugiing it into has only USB 1.1 ports.
14:05<phillipsjk256>(The hub is actually a keyboard)
14:06<blast007>wikipedia's page on USB says that a bus-powered hub will tell the system to provide full power (500ma) but it itself will only provide one-unit (100ma) to each of it's ports
14:07<phillipsjk256>sounds about right.

For instance, if you have resolvconf, various dns-* options can be provided to an interface in /etc/network/interfaces (such as dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4). 22:20<Laogeodritt>hi! anyone know whether Boost.Python is available via apt for the current python3, or only for python (default, i.e., 2.x)? libboost-python-dev doesn't specify but seems to only depend on the python (default) package, and I didn't find a python3 version on a quick search. Using deb testing stream.

22:26<Amarande>okay, any idea what changed recently, if anything, regarding kde, google chrome (closed source version), and iceweasel on jessie?
22:26<Amarande>I have two machines that I recently set up jessie on, both within the past month or so
22:26-!-arlen [~arlen@jarvis.arlen.io] has left #debian [Leaving]
22:26<Amarande>both with KDE, both with virtually identical package selections upon installation (only difference was I picked ssh server in tasksel on this machine, but not on the other one)
22:27-!-SleepyHead [~SleepyHea@c-73-147-205-102.hsd1.va.comcast.net] has joined #debian
22:27<Amarande>installed my preferred internet software on both (hexchat and google chrome)
22:27<Amarande>yet, behaviour is surprisingly different between the two, and I have no idea why
22:27<Amarande>purging the dot-directories under /home/amarande (reverting to a clean kde profile) didn't do anything either
22:28-!-mode/#debian [+l 689] by debhelper
22:28<Amarande>On the first machine (Haswell Xeon E3, Nvidia video card w/ proprietary driver) I get a pink KDE cursor by default (not that I care that much about the colours themselves, but the fact that there is a difference at all is very odd)
22:28<Amarande>and hexchat launches links in Google Chrome just ducky from "open link in browser"
22:29<Amarande>On this machine (AMD Vishera FX-6300, AMD Radeon HD 7850 w/ open source drivers) I get a *brown* KDE cursor by default
22:30<Amarande>and, also very strangely, hexchat ABSOLUTELY INSISTED on "open link in browser" launching the link in iceweasel, regardless of the default browser setting

22:31<Amarande>it's probably relevant - also on the Vishera machine, gvfs-open would also insist on loading web urls into iceweasel instead of google-chrome, even though gvfs-mime --query text/html, as well as attempting update-alternatives --config x-www-browser, duly indicates that google-chrome was selected as default
22:31<Amarande>the only thing that worked on this machine was to uninstall iceweasel altogether
22:31<Amarande>why is jessie behaving so differently on each machine? (has it got something to do with the specific version of chrome that was current when I installed it on each, or something else?)
22:33<Txil>There appears to be a lean toward using established troubleshooting techniques. The snake method is a good starter.
22:36<Amarande>The big question is why installing debian stable and the same packages on machine A and B and setting the same defaults would not produce the same behaviour on both machines ...
22:36<Txil>Once the baseline is firmly in place the re-introduction can proceed in a controlled manner.
22:36<Amarande>and somehow I don't think it can be chalked up to the AMD open vs Nvidia proprietary driver thing
22:37<Amarande>(okay, I wouldn't be surprised if that explained the difference in default cursor colours, although why that should be is also puzzling)
22:38-!-mode/#debian [+l 681] by debhelper
22:38<Amarande>hmm.
22:39<Amarande>if I reinstall iceweasel, it again butts in in the same circumstance, even though google-chrome remains set as the default browser
22:39<Amarande>something's odd here
22:41<Txil>I laugh at myself often when debugging. Usually it's after taking a long break and returning to evaluate the problem again.
