01:05<kingsley__>ryouma: Do you happen to remember
01:05<kingsley__>1.) if the mode error message may have included the word "kernel", and
01:06<kingsley__>2.) whether you simultaneously tried upgrading the linux kernel?
01:06<kingsley__>I seem to vaguely recall needed to upgrade both.
01:08<kingsley__>But if you happen to have the time, and are so inclined, maybe you could try upgrading to jessie again, save the exact error message, and focus your debugging effort on that.

01:10<kingsley__>My vague recollection is that newer versions of X expect the kernel to switch between character and graphic modes, which is supported by recent versions of the linux kernel.
01:11<kingsley__>I think I remember seeing an error message in X's log file like ... "KMS failed"
01:11<kingsley__>whee "KMS" is an acronym for kernel mode switching.

03:51<themill>Glanzmann: looks like you might need to fix the maintainer prerm script there. It's not multiarch aware and isn't coping.
03:52<Glanzmann>I tried that by adding an exit 0 at the beginning.
03:52<themill>Glanzmann: if might be better to force the removal of both packages, do the manual clean-up the prerm would have done and then install the one you want
03:52<Glanzmann>Is that enough or I'm missing anything else.
03:52<Glanzmann>I tried that as well. It gives me the following two: dpkg-query: error: --listfiles needs a valid package name but 'python-pil' is not: ambiguous package name 'python-pil' with more than one installed instance
03:52<themill>well there's cleaning up the pyc files that would be left behind, but yes, that's enough
03:53<themill>you'd need to put exit 0 at the top of both arch's prerm
03:53<Glanzmann>https://pbot.rmdir.de/pOLrp8HwAnjzHj1x4iHV2g
03:54<Glanzmann>themill: Perfect. I now got rid of one of the two.
03:55<Glanzmann>themill: Thank you. that resolved it.
03:55<themill>python-pil probably shouldn't be Multi-Arch: same if the removal can't work

03:58<Glanzmann>I see.
03:58<Glanzmann>I thought that would be just python code. But I see my error now.
03:59<themill>yeah, some sprinklings of C to speed things up
04:01<themill>Curiously, I have no issues adding removing python-pil:i386 on an amd64 installation. What version of python-minimal do you have?
04:02<Glanzmann>https://pbot.rmdir.de/-rSocN3jKt6hYyFW3Lag-Q
04:02<Glanzmann>themill: I had the problem when both were installed.

04:02<themill>yeah, I just installed python-pil:amd64 then :i386 and then removed the :i386 version

04:03<themill>yeah
04:03<Glanzmann>strange. Maybe at the time I installed the amd64 packet my python was broken so it reported an error and that caused this strange state. I have no Idea.
04:04<themill>hmm... it also switched python over on me.

06:55<themill>Now you can add it back as a foreign architecture to let you install something :þ
06:56<themill>no worries. It's a fun game to crossgrade like this. I find it amazing how robust the packaging system is that you can get away with this sort of craziness.
06:57<Glanzmann>Me, too.
06:57<Glanzmann>I firsted wanted to split my raid 1, install 64 bit and set up all the services.
06:58<Glanzmann>But I made a list and it is 30+ services that I need to configure. So I did a full backup and gave it a shot.
06:58<Glanzmann>But that is actually what I like about Debian.
06:58<Glanzmann>I have systems which I upgraded 15 years without once reinstalling.
06:59<Glanzmann>They got new disks, new hardware, but not once a reinstall. :-)
06:59<themill>The write-ups of how to do cross-grade like this are mostly wheezy-era and I suspect some details have changed. It'd be nice if you could blog about the exact procedure you followed with jessie so we've got it for future reference

07:05<Glanzmann>I screwed up the part in the middle where all binaries are installed as amd64
07:06<themill>«Go mad and make it amd64» was a good description of the middle step...
07:06<Glanzmann>So I did one by one mnaually.
07:06<Glanzmann>At some point apt-get was taking over.
07:06<Glanzmann>And I did the last 10% with apt.
07:06<Glanzmann>And than I wiped all i386 packages.
07:08<Glanzmann>Probably I'll add some i386 packages later.

08:34<SynrG>my understanding is that it's still a work in progress. i've heard reports of people actually using it, and other reports that it's sufficiently incomplete as to not be worth trying yet.

08:35<Pwkay>oh, thanks - i ll try. Sorry for being slowpoke
08:37<SynrG>in any case, don't expect a lot of people to know how to help if and when things go wrong :p
08:37<SynrG>until it really becomes mainstream, if you're not comfortable debugging things on your own, you had best steer away from it.

21:06<iohzrd>that would be super awesome
21:07<Amarande>well, machines that absolutely can't boot in legacy mode are kinda rare
21:07<Amarande>and efi boot is always something of a pain to get set up properly in debian

21:09<Amarande>it's an old Gigabyte AMD 970 board :)

21:09-!-gfedel [~gfedel@191.250.137.117] has joined #debian
21:10<Amarande>iohzrd: the only time you really need EFI is if you're dual booting with an existing Windows install on a GPT disk
21:10<somiaj>iohzrd: I would do what ever works best for your situation. But provided you can boot the installer in efi mode the efi install works fairly well. (though I think there may be some additional steps if on a mac since its efi is slightly different)
21:10<Amarande>maybe if the *system* drive is larger than 2TB
21:11<somiaj>like copy grub64.efi to BOOT64.efi or maybe something else.
21:11<Amarande>but other than that, if you're single booting debian might as well use legacy boot

21:19<iohzrd>legacy works fine on my air, i guess the real question is, is there any benefit to using efi?
21:21<Amarande>iohzrd: in the end user case, no, not really
21:22<Amarande>about the only time it really becomes a necessity is if you want to use Windows with Secure Boot, or if you have a GPT Windows installation and want to dual boot Linux (because Windows can only boot from GPT drives if it's booting in EFI mode), or if the system drive is larger than 2TB (then you're better off with EFI boot so you don't have to worry about /boot location and barriers all over again)
21:23<Amarande>the size of data-only drives doesn't matter, nor does Linux care about the combination of boot method and partition format (that's a Windows specific rule)
21:23<SamB_laptop>probably something strange about their bootloader

23:05<phillipsjk>wiping stuff out sounds like it will cause data loss.
23:08<phillipsjk>There is a possibility of a drive error as well. Generelly if "dd if=/dev/sdx of=/dev/null" is able to read the whole disk without stopping on an error, it should be fine.
