04:52<KNUBBIG>Hi, I've got a VServer (running on Xen) that I want to upgrade from wheezy to jessie. Currently, the VM is using the 2.6.30.2-domU-v4 kernel which I need to upgrade to 3.x. As far as I understand, this is only possible if the dom0 is using PV-GRUB. Is there any way to find that out from inside my VM? Thanks.

I need to be able set backlight value as non root and xbacklight doesn't work. The only way which works is echoing to /sys/class/backlight/... but this requires root.

19:39<alexd>Can anyone tell me how to install a program that does not come from software updater and synaptic package manager? I downloaded Firefox Web Developer browser for Linux and it is a tar.bz2 file.
19:40<at0m|c>alexd: you want firefox on debian? it's called iceweasel here.
19:40<at0m|c>!firefox
19:40<dpkg>Mozilla Firefox is replaced by Iceweasel in Debian, ask me about <iceweasel> and <why iceweasel>. For actual Mozilla Firefox® support, try #firefox on irc.freenode.net. For the latest and greatest versions of Iceweasel, ask me about <mozilla.debian.net>.
19:41<at0m|c>if you want to work with the tar.bz2 file, extract and readme.
19:41<alexd>I may be on the wrong chat, but I have Cinnamon Mate, and I think it is Derbian distro. However, I already have Firefox. This is a special browser with built in web development tools.
19:42<alexd>I extracted but found no readme file
19:42<blast007>isn't Cinnamon and Mate two different desktop environments?
19:42<alexd>no they are variations of each other
19:43<blast007>so what linux distribution are you running?
19:43<alexd>Cinnamon 17 LTS
19:44<blast007>so Linux Mint then?
19:44<alexd>close enough
19:44<blast007>!mint
19:44<dpkg>Linux Mint is not Debian and is not supported in #debian. Please use their forums at http://forums.linuxmint.com/ or join #linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org for support. Linux Mint is variously based on <Ubuntu> with a "Linux Mint Debian Edition" (LMDE) also available. See also <based on debian>, <mintppc>.

23:44<timmc>I grabbed the torrent for debian live 8.1.0 xfce, and the md5sum doesn't match for the squashfs.
23:45<timmc>The torrent still verifies, and I have not yet checked for badblocks on the USB stick (although I will if no one tells me "this is a known problem". (Also, the live boot fails partway through, otherwise I wouldn't be here...)
23:46<timmc>This is http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/i386/bt-hybrid/debian-live-8.1.0-i386-xfce-desktop.iso.torrent written to a thumb drive using dd.
23:46<pencilandpaper>the live boot didnt work for me either timmc . i just went back to the xfce iso and installed it the "old way".
23:47<pencilandpaper>i dont know why it didnt work for me though.
23:50<somiaj>timmc: does the iso md5sum match? I think you have to do something tricky to check the md5sum of the iamge on your usb due to different size of the device
23:51<pencilandpaper>well you check the md5sum of the iso that was downloaded right?
23:51<pencilandpaper>not of the extracted iso on your usb stick.
