09:00<duclicsic>so if the IP you wanted to make the exception for was 1.2.3.4, and your router on your local network is on 192.168.1.254, and your main network interface is eth0, youd do: ip route add 1.2.3.4/32 via 192.168.1.254 dev eth0"
09:00<reza>thank you, duclicsic
09:01<duclicsic>but that won't persist between reboots, do you need it to run that command every time your vpn tunnel comes up
09:01<SynrG>you can use post-up and pre-down options in /etc/network/interfaces
09:01<SynrG>assuming you're using /etc/network/interfaces to set up and tear down the tunnel ...
09:01<SynrG>if using NetworkManager, it has a place to define routes

09:02<SynrG>because if you define a route on the primary interface, that should be preferred over any default routing over the tunnel

09:07<SynrG>reza: then click Routes: and define routes there
09:08<duclicsic>SynrG: i'm not sure he'll have to do any of this if the IP in question is the VPN server
09:08<duclicsic>openvpn does this automatically

09:08<SynrG>duclicsic: ah. k
09:08<reza>i have defined router
09:08<duclicsic>otherwise it would kill its own connection to the server as soon as it installs a default route pointing down the tunnel

11:36<maazu>lancelot_of: better make sure you have enough free disk space for your install
11:38<SynrG>lancelot_of: there are potential issues migrating home dirs from old OSes to new.
11:38<SynrG>lancelot_of: the dotfiles of the old OS may not be suitable at all under the new one
11:39<SynrG>lancelot_of: for this reason, my preference is to repartition the old drive for the new OS, leaving the old OS in its partition, then selectively copy into the new system anything i truly want to keep ...
11:39<SynrG>and when i'm finally done and satisfied i no longer need the old OS, clean it up, reclaiming that partition for some other purpose

11:40<SynrG>plus, this means that in an emergency, i could always still boot the old system.

12:30<retrospectacus>Ctrl-z , bg, and disown
12:30<Autofire>A while ago, I did a dist-upgrade from Wheezy to Jessie. Far too many things broke, so I'm starting anew. The plan is to have two installations on my hard drive (the old install and the new install) until I can get the new installation doing everything the old one could. (Without being messed up, anyway.)
12:30<Autofire>So I've finished this second installation, and now I have a bit of a problem. I'd like to have the same set of packages as on the old system, but I'm not sure exactly how to go about this. Could I feed the output of "dpkg --get-selections" to dpkg in the new installation?
12:30<Autofire>Or, more importantly, do I want to copy my list of packages? Could this lead to a cluttered system or break something? Should I just manually install what I know I'll need?
12:30<cx405>Is there any remote management solution in existence? I am not really happy about mashing own solution or making it complex.
12:31<SynrG>dworkz: you might want to inform your session about the lxpanel if you're using a session manager. then things like the logout button can work

12:32<dworkz>Wow, how do i know what i use to start my session first of all :), i just installed openbox, downloaded lxpanel, configured it the way i want it to look
12:32<dworkz>now i want it to stick there and the way it is :)
12:32<cx405>Because, basically I will have to setup ssh, then configure her (and mine) firewalls on routers, then manage IP persistence via some nodns server. Its just a long manual chain, it would be nice if there is some solution for this sort of task.
12:33<SynrG>are you using startx? or a *dm to start your X session?

17:53<ary>Hi. I pressed ctrl+alt+F1, loged into root user, typed startx and put my machine to compile a program that I downloaded. Then I pressed ctrl+alt+F7 to back to the default screen. The problem is: when i go back to root session with ctrl+alt+F1, the screen is blocked. when I put the password and hit enter I got the message: This doesn't work. How do I go to the root Sessions (ctrl+alt+F1) and log in without start another session or reboot???????

21:09<dakka>I remember trying to do that recently and i couldnt get it to work, so i ended up simply using: cp <file> <device>
21:09<dakka>if u are using linux already, u can just copy the iso file to the device, that actually extracts it or something
21:10<danshin>it's work to boot?
