03:07<lancelot_of>there is something not so clear to me in debian jessie. How are wifi connections managed? In gdm3 panel there is no applet showing and managing wifi connections, also if I run nm-applet it opens but does not shows available networks and cannot connect to them. The only way I found to get wifi on was via wpa_supplicant.conf file, but I assumed it was an old fashioned way to manage wifis....what am I missing?

03:08<muep>lancelot_of: network management stuff in gnome would only work if you run networkmanager

03:08<muep>lancelot_of: but normally with gnome you would not run nm-applet. there is an equivalent-ish GUI for it built into gnome-shell

03:09<lancelot_of>muep, the problem is that I would not work under gnome but under fluxbox. I wonder if there is any way to run network management stuff gnome way under fluxbox (what processes should I call by default?)
03:10<madrik>I, too, run fluxbox and nm-applet

03:11<muep>lancelot_of: with fluxbox, you can not use the UI built into gnome-shell
03:12<muep>lancelot_of: but nm-applet is a tray applet and you can use that
03:12<lancelot_of>madrik, does it work correctly? How to setup?
03:12<muep>lancelot_of: nm-applet is just an ui, though, so you need to also run the networkmanager service or nm-applet will not be able to do anything
03:13<lancelot_of>muep, so I should not run ifup wlan0 using wpasupplicant, right?
03:13<madrik>fwiw, I just installd network-manager-gnome and ran it from the command
03:13<madrik>line
03:14<muep>lancelot_of: should be unnecessary if you use NM
03:14<madrik>then I put it in the startup script for fluxbox
03:14-!-fast [~fabian@ip-176-198-146-90.hsi05.unitymediagroup.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
03:14<muep>lancelot_of: also IIRC NM in debian at least used to avoid touching interfaces that are set up with debian-specific tools
03:15<muep>lancelot_of: so you might need to clean such debian-specific config files from references to interfaces that you wish to manage with NM
03:16<lancelot_of>madrik, do you use also any power-manager in fluxbox (allowing you to automatically hibernate, e.g, when battery is critically under, say, 5%)?
03:16-!-Auroch [~Auroch@81.77-67-87.adsl-dyn.isp.belgacom.be] has joined #debian
03:17<madrik>Haven't thus far. But I do have lightdm and light-locker for automatic locking on suspension.
03:17<lancelot_of>muep, ok so I will try to do it that way. The problem was that without wpasupplicant (and ifup wlan0) the network did not work also with networkmanager runnning. I'm going to try configuring step by step
03:17-!-fast_ [~fabian@ip-178-202-254-52.hsi09.unitymediagroup.de] has quit [Quit: leaving]
03:18<muep>lancelot_of: I would expect it to more or less just work by running the networkmanager service and some UI for it
03:18<babilen>lancelot_of: nm-applet should work just fine in fluxbox. Simply make sure that you do *not* manage the interface in /etc/network/interfaces and that you start fluxbox with a supported display manager (e.g. gdm3) so that logind and dbus are correctly initialised.

03:20<lancelot_of>babilen, so I should remove the wlan0 lines in my /etc/network/interfaces file, right?

03:21<babilen>Sure, otherwise NM wouldn't manage them (unless told so explicitly!)
03:21<lancelot_of>babilen, and how can I check for correct initialisation of logind and dbus?
03:23<muep>lancelot_of: perhaps use one of the common *dm programs like gdm or kdm for logging in
03:23<babilen>lancelot_of: How do you start fluxbox?
03:24<lancelot_of>babilen, via gdm3
03:24<babilen>You shouldn't have a problem then

03:24<babilen>Is it not working now that you've removed the configuration entries from /e/n/i ?
03:26<lancelot_of>it is still working
03:26<lancelot_of>probably because i missed running ifdown wlan0

17:52<EmleyMoor>I've got a 6in4 tunnel defined in /etc/network/interfaces, but it's failing to actually come up - sometimes, RTNETLINK says: No route to host, other times, completely silent but no sign of it being defined and indeed it fails to work. I intend this to be triggered automatically by network-manager, but obviously it has to work first. Are there restrictions on the interface names of these tunnels in jessie

22:13<tsoutseki>also, once i add it, how do i restart the thing so that it will take into consideration the change i made?
22:14<Brigo>tsoutseki, probably only in the default one, you can "restart it" (reload the list of available packages) with apt-get update or aptitude update.
