00:34<ryouma>rhostat: dunno what a "driver stack load sequence" is, but the problem is that the initrd is not being correctly created. in particular (and i have diffed it), the initrd's conf.d/cryptroot is not being updated.

00:56<twb>OK so /etc/default/tmpfs exists on debian and it says "you can set this to make /tmp a tmpfs".
00:56<twb>If you set it, systemd IGNORES IT COMPLETELY. Rrrgh.
00:57<twb>If that file's no good, it shouldn't be present in a fresh never-was-sysvinit install :-/
00:59<twb>I'm going to just use fstab like I had to under stupid upstart, because ICBF learning about /etc/systemd/tmpfiles or whatever that New Way is

01:23<twb>Now that /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules is gone, what's the right way to give network interfaces logical names? (e.g. "phones" instead of "eth0")

01:24<ryouma>(to rhostat who is gone: although i am ignorant in the ways of boot, i am confident of this much: it is an initramfs that did not have its cryptroot updated)
01:26<twb>Ah, my notes already say: -- I have to create that file ab initio.
01:26<judd>Bug in udev (closed): «udev: 70-persistent-net.rules isn't generated»; severity: normal; opened: 2013-07-12; last modified: 2013-08-19.
01:27<jm_>twb: is it really gone? I still have it and /lib/udev/write_net_rules still exists
01:27<twb>jm_: apparently it's automatically disabled for some MAC addresses
01:28<twb>ENV{MATCHADDR}=="?[2367abef]:*", ENV{MATCHADDR}=""; ENV{MATCHADDR}=="52:54:00:*|54:52:00:*", ENV{MATCHADDR}=""
01:28<twb>Without looking, I suppose those are the default MAC prefixes of KVM and vbox
01:28<jm_>yeah that's what bug says too it seems

02:42<harrychapman>Hi all. I'm very new to Debian and Linux and I'm trying to install a package on Jessie to make my ralink wifi work. I need to install this package - how do I do that using apt-get?? Thanks in advance!
02:42<harrychapman>(or rather, the package listed on that page, which is )
02:42<twb>harrychapman: can you reach the internet with apt-get, or does that need the wifi working first?
02:43<twb>harrychapman: in the first case, you just need to enable non-free AFAICT
02:43-!-towo^work [] has joined #debian
02:43<harrychapman>twb: hi! I've got an ethernet cable plugged in for internet access on the computer. I think I've enabled non-free but maybe I haven't done it correctly
02:44<twb>harrychapman: OK let's look at your sources.list*
02:44<twb>harrychapman: also: you need to "apt-get update" after changing sources.list

02:46<twb>Or you can pastebin in a different way if you are comfortable doing it your own way
02:47<twb>So we can see there it knows about non-free for security, but not for your repos
02:47<harrychapman>twb: Ah right - that was very silly of me!
02:47<twb>You need to add non-free to all three of those
02:48<harrychapman>twb: right! I'll try that and see if it works. Thanks!
02:48<twb>You might also want to try instead of hard-coding the .nz mirror.
02:48<twb>Tho here in .au it tends to pick overseas mirrors because *all* the AU mirrors are usually broken :-(
02:48<harrychapman>twb: Okay I'll keep that in mind :-)
02:49<twb>If you browse to it will tell you which mirror you'll get right now
02:50<twb>Oh, and I should call it by its new name
02:51<harrychapman>twb: I have to go, but thanks very much for your help!!!

03:02<alexander>alright thanks
03:02<twb>You can have php 5.4 in wheezy

08:19<muep>network setup stuff in gnome is quite heavily based on networkmanager, so the problem might be related to e.g. having a tool old NM version or to an unsuitable NM config

09:17<cwenner>Hi Channel, I might be missing something obvious here but have googled, experimented, and not made any real progress in several days now. A wheezy server freezes very early in the boot process and I am not able to figure out why or how to get more information out of it. Aside from the boot log, no log files are even updated before the boot freezes. I have also added log flags to the kernel and made rsynclog always flush but the log files
09:17<cwenner>are empty besides initialization. What has caused this issue, I am not sure of, but I did do the mistake of a complete aptitude update on 7.7 (not dist upgrade) without rebooting the server for a month. No system files have otherwise been touched. The server reboot was not planned but whether this is related to the problem is not certain, especially when the server does not physically reside with me. Judging by the logs, I do not believe
09:17<cwenner>there has been a break in. The most important system file which was updated with apt from the last working boot was initramfs, though no other boot files were changed. The only change I've tried was an update-initramfs but to no avail. Is there any way I could get more information out or is there anything else I should test? My next step would otherwise be to upgrade to 8.1 in hope that it clears out the issue and otherwise to just reinst
09:17<cwenner>all the OS and hope that the issue does not appear again :s. By comparing with other boot logs, it seems the next step would normally be runlevel 2 init. Thank you kindly for reading and any tips. Boot log:

15:52<andrew>ok, that's neat

15:54<dpkg>bootlogd is used to record boot messages to /var/log/boot. For Debian 7 "Wheezy" and later releases, install the bootlogd package to enable. In Debian 6.0 "Squeeze", bootlogd is provided by the sysvinit-utils package; set BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=Yes in /etc/default/bootlogd to enable.
